Energy Situation In Libya.

q    Libya is one of the larges crude oil exporters of the world and

around 4% of the world’s oil reserve.

q    Primary energy supply in Libya consists of oil products (90%) and

      natural gas (10%).

q    The general electricity company of Libya (GECOL) is Libya’s state

owned company responsible for electricity generation,

      transportation and distribution.
Energy Situation In Libya.

q    The electricity demand is growing rapidly with a growth rate of

      around 7% annually.

q    The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya REAOL framed a

renewable energy roadmap up to 2020 that has been approved by

the former Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The strategic plan

is to cover 10% of Libya’s energy supply from renewable

energies resources by the zone of 2030.

Energy Efficiency In Libya

q    There is no agency for Energy Efficiency in Libya and no clear

assignment of responsibility for this topic.

q    Energy efficiency and GHG suppression in the oil sector is

      therefore of great importance.

q    Improvements in electricity use could reduce the need for

electricity generation by 2160 MW in the year 2020.
Energy Efficiency In Libya

q    The General Electricity Company of Libya or (GECOL) has some

internal programs and there is an office working on the Demand

      Side Management (DSM).

q    Audits and the Promotion of ESCOs : Libya has no work of this

nature has been undertaken in Libya.

q    One possibility would be to attribute the responsibility to REAOL
Energy Efficiency In Libya

q    There is no external financial incentives for either of these

groups to stimulate auditing of their use of energy within their

processes or to promote investment by the companies in Energy

      Efficiency.
RE Development In Libya.

Libya is optimally placed to become a Renewable leader in the region

q    It can capitalize on Africa’s growth and power demand.

q    It can exploit its significant wind and solar potential.

q    It can diversify and make its economy more resilient.

q    It can further strengthen its economy by adopting a

       strategic RES development plan.
RE Development In Libya.

Solar energy potential

Solar radiation (kWh/m2/day)

                               q  Average solar radiation of
                                 2,470 kWh/m2/day
q  one of the highest solar
                                 radiation in the world
RE Development In Libya.
Wind energy potential

 Wind speed (m/s)

                        q  26 meteorological stations
                          were installed in different
                          places in Libya to measure
                          the wind speed.
                        q  Av e r a g e w i n d s p e e d
                          according to measure the
wind speed in the range of
                          5 -10.5 m/s).
RE Development In Libya.

q    Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL) was founded in

2007 to promote the development of renewable energy in the

      country.

q     A goal has been set by REAOL to reach 10% of the energy

supply from renewable energy resources by the year 2030, to

      achieve this target.

  • 4. Country Resource Resource Libya’s resources Libya in comparison Proven oil reserves of 43  Largest oil reserves in billions BOE with significant Africa Oil additional potential Gas reserves of 10 billions Fourth largest natural BOE gas reserves in Africa Gas Average solar radiation of Second-highest solar Solar 2,470 kWh/m2/day radiation in the world High average wind speed at Attractive global location Wind several locations for wind farms
  • 5. Energy Situation In Libya. q  Libya is one of the larges crude oil exporters of the world and around 4% of the world’s oil reserve. q  Primary energy supply in Libya consists of oil products (90%) and natural gas (10%). q  The general electricity company of Libya (GECOL) is Libya’s state owned company responsible for electricity generation, transportation and distribution.
  • 6. Energy Situation In Libya. q  The electricity demand is growing rapidly with a growth rate of around 7% annually. q  The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya REAOL framed a renewable energy roadmap up to 2020 that has been approved by the former Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The strategic plan is to cover 10% of Libya’s energy supply from renewable energies resources by the zone of 2030.
  • 7. Electricity Main Key Figures. Year 2010 Peak demand 5,760MW Installed Generated capacity 8,350 MW Electricity generated 32,560 MWh Consumption Per Capita 4,600Kwh 220 KV transmission system 15,010 Km 400 KV transmission system 11,600 Km Urban & Rural Electrification Rate 99% Source: General electric company of Libya (GECOL)
  • 8. Electricity Main Key Figures. Evolution of Electricity generation (2000-2010). Residen(al    (36%)   Industrial    (14%)   Source: General electric company of Libya (GECOL)
  • 9. Electricity Main Key Figures. Electricity generation by fuel type (2010). Heavy fuel oil Residen(al   (20%) Natural gas  (36%)   (38%) Light fuel oil Industrial   (42%)  (14%)   Source: General electric company of Libya (GECOL)
  • 10. Electricity Main Key Figures. Electricity consumption per sector (2010). v   Others    (27%)   Residen(al    (30%)   Agriculture    (13%)   Commercial   Industrial    (14%)    (15%)   v  Others: including (General Services, Street lighting) Source: General electric company of Libya (GECOL)
  • 11. Energy Efficiency In Libya q  There is no agency for Energy Efficiency in Libya and no clear assignment of responsibility for this topic. q  Energy efficiency and GHG suppression in the oil sector is therefore of great importance. q  Improvements in electricity use could reduce the need for electricity generation by 2160 MW in the year 2020.
  • 12. Energy Efficiency In Libya q  The General Electricity Company of Libya or (GECOL) has some internal programs and there is an office working on the Demand Side Management (DSM). q  Audits and the Promotion of ESCOs : Libya has no work of this nature has been undertaken in Libya. q  One possibility would be to attribute the responsibility to REAOL
  • 13. Energy Efficiency In Libya q  There is no external financial incentives for either of these groups to stimulate auditing of their use of energy within their processes or to promote investment by the companies in Energy Efficiency.
  • 14. RE Development In Libya. Libya is optimally placed to become a Renewable leader in the region q  It can capitalize on Africa’s growth and power demand. q  It can exploit its significant wind and solar potential. q  It can diversify and make its economy more resilient. q  It can further strengthen its economy by adopting a strategic RES development plan.
  • 15. RE Development In Libya. Solar energy potential Solar radiation (kWh/m2/day) q  Average solar radiation of 2,470 kWh/m2/day q  one of the highest solar radiation in the world
  • 16. RE Development In Libya. Wind energy potential Wind speed (m/s) q  26 meteorological stations were installed in different places in Libya to measure the wind speed. q  Av e r a g e w i n d s p e e d according to measure the wind speed in the range of 5 -10.5 m/s).
  • 17. RE Development In Libya. q  Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL) was founded in 2007 to promote the development of renewable energy in the country. q  A goal has been set by REAOL to reach 10% of the energy supply from renewable energy resources by the year 2030, to achieve this target.
