Reading well books on prescription Social Prescribing presentation
This presentation is from the Art of Social Prescribing event which took place on 17th September 2015 in Liverpool. This presentation was given by Debbie Hicks from the Reading Agency on the Reading Well Books on Prescription initiative. http://readingagency.org.uk/ This one day conference aimed to respond to increasing interest in social prescribing. It presented the latest academic and applied research with particular reference to the role that arts and cultural activities play in social prescribing. A range of workshops took place introduced a range of established arts and cultural programmes, highlighted good practice approaches in mental health and wellbeing and encouraged debate on how to most effectively commission, fund and evaluate social prescribing schemes. The conference was delivered in partnership by NEF and academics leading the AHRC-funded Art of Social Prescribing project at Liverpool John Moores University. It is a Making Connections event, part of the Cultural Commissioning Programme, an Arts Council England funded initiative to support commissioners, arts & cultural sector and policymakers with undertaking cultural commissioning to improve public service outcomes. www.ncvo.org/CCProg.

Reading Well National Evidence • Reach: 275,000 people • Strong book issues • 2 million leaflets distributed • Approx 7,000 prescribers • Delivering prescriber and user benefit • 91% service respondents found the book helpful • 79% understood more about their condition • 74% felt more confident about managing symptoms • 37% said symptoms improved • 100% prescriber respondents said the scheme was helpful • National cost average of £1.00 per person Had some very positive reader feedback (GP)

Culture, Health and Wellbeing Partnership • The Culture, Health and Wellbeing Partnership was formed in 2012 from a series of events that explored the links between culture and wellbeing. • The Partnerships main aims are to advocate for the role culture plays in improving wellbeing, by developing networks as well as supporting and commissioning work. • Uses ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ as a framework for delivery.
