Galileo Galilei was born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He studied mathematics in university instead of becoming a doctor as his father wished. To earn money, Galileo began experimenting with inventions and successfully created a compass for measuring land. He heard of the recently invented spyglass and created his own telescope within a day, allowing objects to appear ten times larger. Through his telescope, Galileo observed the moon's surface was covered in bumps and craters, contradicting the belief that it was smooth. His inventions helped improve understanding of astronomy.
