II. Step Two Directions:Write a summary of the main ideas of the section you read for this response.
                                   What are the important/big ideas? Use the 5 W’s and How to guide your writing.
                           Please remember to use TAG in your topic sentence.

III. Step Three Directions: Each week, you will complete one of the following. Use the line to the left of
                                     each choice as a “check off.”

        A. Prediction
               1. What do you think will happen next?
               2. Explain using details and information from the story why you think this will happen. Be
               thorough in your response – you must support what you are saying by basing it on details
               from the text.

        B.Vocabulary
              1. Select at least three new and interesting words from this week’s reading. Copy the
        sentences with the words from the book (include the page number).
              2. Look up the definitions and record them on your paper.
              3. For each new word, draw a picture or write an original sentence that contains the word

        C. Connections
              1. Based on the pages read, make a text to text, text to self, or text to world connection.
              2. Provide details about the connection to support your response, explaining thoroughly why
              this is a connection.

        D. Character Traits
               1. Choose a character from your reading and write their name.
               2. Choose a trait that describes the character in this passage and write it underneath the
        character’s name.
               3. Support your choice by telling what the character thought, said or did to show he/she fits this
        trait.

        E. Literary Devices
                1. Identify at least two types of figurative language (ex.: simile, metaphor, etc.) used
        throughout the section of the book you are reading.
                2. Write the figurative language phrase, and tell what the phrase means.
                3. Draw a quick sketch of the literal meaning of the phrase.

        F. Conflict
               1. Write about the problem or struggle a character(s) faced in this section.
               2. How did the character(s) handle this problem?
               3. Was the problem resolved in this section? If so, explain how it was resolved. If not, explain
        what happened as a result of the conflict.
