How to answer the 10 mark Extract Question:
Unit 1a) Of Mice and Men Unit 2i) AIC & Heroes
In the exams, you will be expected to answer two questions on each text, the
first of which will be based on an extract from the play.
1. READ the question and the passage closely.
Highlight/underline key words and phrases
2. REFLECT
What is the significance of this passage to the text as a whole?
3. IDENTIFY
At least THREE techniques used in the passage (& their effect).
4. WRITE
- A brief introductory paragraph explaining the significance of the
passage. Three to four sentences is fine.
- Using PEAs, analyse how the writer has conveyed the character/mood
& atmosphere etc. with clear focus on the question. Aim for 3 PEAs
- Write a brief 1 or 2 line conclusion with your personal response to the
question
REMEMBER:
 Analyse the language and narrative or dramatic techniques:
 Choice of words
 Imagery
 Sentence length/structure/sentence types (questions/imperatives/lists)
 Dialogue
 Narrative
 (stage directions)

PLAYWRIGHT/AUTHOR
MAKE LINKS TO THE REST OF THE TEXT.
