The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) is India's primary foreign intelligence agency, established in 1968 in response to intelligence failures during wars with China and Pakistan. R&AW's objectives include monitoring foreign developments impacting India's security, influencing public opinion abroad, counter-terrorism operations, and promoting India's strategic interests. It is headed by the Secretary (Research) and collects intelligence through human and technical means such as espionage, subversion and sabotage. R&AW works closely with intelligence agencies of other countries like Russia, Afghanistan, Israel, the US and UK on issues of shared concern such as Pakistan's nuclear program.
