Alluxio, formerly Tachyon, is a memory speed virtual distributed storage system and leverages memory for storing data and accelerating access to data in different storage systems. Many organizations and deployments use Alluxio with Apache Spark, and some of them scale out to over PB’s of data. Alluxio can enable Spark to be even more effective, in both on-premise deployments and public cloud deployments. Alluxio bridges Spark applications with various storage systems and further accelerates data intensive applications. In this talk, we briefly introduce Alluxio, and present different ways how Alluxio can help Spark jobs. We discuss best practices of using Alluxio with Spark, including RDDs and DataFrames, as well as on-premise deployments and public cloud deployments.

In this video from the Stanford HPC Conference, Liran Zvibel from Weka.IO presents: Making Machine Learning Compute Bound Again. "GPUs are getting faster on a yearly cycle. Networking was able to catch up and support linear scaling of models that fit in memory. Traditional storage has not caught up to the condensed performance needed by GPU-filled servers. The amount of concurrent clients and the sheer amount of data required to effectively scale modern deep learning models keeps growing. We are going to present WekaIO, the lowest latency, highest throughput file system solution that scales to 100s of PB in a single namespace supporting the most challenging deep learning projects that run today. We will present real life benchmarks comparing WekaIO performance to a local SSD file system, showing that we are the only coherent shared storage that is even faster than the current caching solutons, while allowing customers to linearly scale performance by adding more GPU servers. Also, we will view the complete ML project lifecycle, from collecting data, cleaning, tagging, exploring, training, validating, and finally archiving, and how customers can use cloud bursting to leverage public cloud infrastructure for improved economics." This tutorial consists of three main parts. In the first part, we provide a detailed overview of the HTML5 standard and show how it can be used for adaptive streaming deployments. In particular, we focus on the HTML5 video, media extensions, and multi-bitrate encoding, encapsulation and encryption workflows, and survey well-established streaming solutions. Furthermore, we present experiences from the existing deployments and the relevant de jure and de facto standards (DASH, HLS, CMAF) in this space. In the second part, we focus on omnidirectional (360) media from creation to consumption. We survey means for the acquisition, projection, coding and packaging of omnidirectional media as well as delivery, decoding and rendering methods. Emerging standards and industry practices are covered as well. The last part presents some of the current research trends, open issues that need further exploration and investigation, and various efforts that are underway in the streaming industry.

In the last half of the 1990s EDA industry analysts began talking about the growing market for tools above the RTL handoff level. This new electronic systems level (ESL) tools market was supposedly going to explode and dramatically change the design landscape. Many companies were funded, but the market never really took off as forecasted. What happened? The principle driving force for higher level tools, that is tools at a higher level of abstraction than gate-level RTL, was simply Moore's Law. Every two years we were growing the transistor count of most devices by 1.5x to 2x. We would need to work more productively at a higher level of abstraction to get our designs completed on time with a reasonable number of engineers. What happened instead was the rapid development of the semiconductor intellectual property market (called SIP, or just IP). Today, nearly all semiconductor design approaches use the Waterfall model. A Waterfall model is where one stage of design, like specification, is fully completed before the next stage of design begins. Parallel or concurrent engineering is barely used if at all. In an era where specifications change often and design cycles need to shrink far more, the Waterfall model is no longer of use to us. On October 1, Sonics started an effort to organize like-minded engineers into a LinkedIn group aimed at getting a new methodology adopted. Modeled somewhat after the Agile Software revolution that started to effect the software industry in 2002, anyone can now join the LinkedIn group, "Agile IC Methodology." Only three weeks after its launch, the group already had more than 200 members. Agile software techniques will not be able to completely map to a IC design methodology. Please join this group now and help us develop the next methodology for IC design.

The charter of the ODSA (Open Domain Specification Architecture) Workgroup is to define an open specification that enables building of Domain Specific Accelerator silicon using best-of-breed components from the industry made available as chiplet dies that can be integrated together as Lego blocks on an organic substrate packaging layer. The resulting multi-chip module (MCM) silicon can be produced at significantly lower development and manufacturing costs, and will deliver much needed performance per watt and performance per dollar efficiencies in networking, security, machine learning and other applications. The ODSA Workgroup also intends to deliver implementations of the specification as board-level prototypes, RTL code and libraries.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
