Many of the young men are from single family homes. Some had encountered adjustment problems in the public school systems and need someone in their corner to help them figure out how to navigate the difficult transition from Boys to Men for black adolescent youth.

Apart from having nearly all the worlds great religions represented, India was the birth place of Hinduism, Buddism, a vital supporter of Zoroastrianism and home to Jainism. Apart from these native religions, India hosted a number of other religions. In 1971, the number of Christians in India was 14.2 Millions, which rose to 32.20 Million at the end of 2011, sharing an overall increase of 55.6%. It is expected that this figure would double by the end of 2020 AD.

RANA Canada is one of the youngest organizations among various Indo-Canadian
organizations based in the GTA and its record community service remains unrivaled.
Very few social organizations can match RANA (Canada)’s record. It has proven time
and again that RANA does not work as an Association but operates as an extended
family, not only for it members but for all those who are associated with us.
In a span of only five years, we have attracted an array of outstanding talent from our community of Rajasthani
Canadians. Given their inspirational vision, idealism, creativity, dedication and organizational skills, I can easily
say I am really proud of our members and our community.
Today, members of our RANA (Canada) family have occupied important positions in various business and so-cial
organisations such as ICCC, Hindu Awareness, NCIC, Jaipur Foot and Rajasthan Foundation. I am proud
to say that this year, the oldest Senior Citizen’s Club of GTA also became a part of RANA. Two of our members
were awarded Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and your President was invited to be part of the Prime Minister’s
delegation to India.
Additionally, for the last three years, we helped sponsor the National Diwali celebration at Parliament Hill in
Ottawa. This year, we were the main organizer of the event, where the Prime Minister of Canada, Senior Min-isters
of his cabinet, diplomats of various countries, heads of temples from all over Canada and heads of various
business and social Organisations celebrated Diwali.
RANA’s ability to transform itself from an infant social organization to a mainstream organization, mainly came
from its own inclusive character, with the support of members from all religion, regions and shades of opinion.
Our members also have an effective presence in their respective work and social activity field.
We all share a common vision for RANA: upholding our culture and heritage in spite of social modernization.
We all feel and act as members of one large family, take pride in each other’s achievements and feel concerned
about various issues faced by our youth, ladies or seniors. This is what makes us go; and going we are. Now we
have RANA (Canada) in Calgary as well. This was a great initiative, which was led by by Yogesh and Anita Pa-liwal,
who moved to Calgary from Toronto just few months back. Our Patron, Sampat Poddar also has a team
of Indo-Canadians of Rajasthani origin in Saskatoon, which is ready to launch RANA (Canada) in Saskatoon,
early next year.
I am deeply conscious of the magnificent legacy of our patrons and seniors from our community, who came to
this country 25-30 years ago. They have been our inspiration, motivation and our guide in achieving our goals.
To be the President of RANA is a privilege, but is also a deeply humbling experience to be a part of a huge ex-tended
family away from the soils of Rajasthan.

On behalf of the Ontario PC Caucus, I would like to extend my
warmest greetings to all the members of the Rajasthan
Association of North America – Canada (RANA).
Last year, I was honoured to be RANA’s guest at your Diwali
Milan. Like so many of the events organized by RANA – from
India Independence Day celebrations to charitable fundraisers –
the Diwali Milan brought together many people from Ontario’s
Rajasthani-Canadian community, providing younger and older
generations an opportunity to spend time with each other while
welcoming people from our province’s broader community.
I had the chance to meet with many outstanding leaders in your
community and see first-hand the strong entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen that has
had a large, positive impact on Ontario. Across the province, Rajasthani-Canadians are running
successful businesses, creating jobs for Ontarians and giving back to the community.
I know we share the same goals. We want to grow the economy and stand up for small
businesses. We believe in balanced budgets and a smaller government – a government that
encourages businesses to grow and create jobs by reducing red tape and ensuring business
taxes are competitive with other jurisdictions.
We believe that we can create a more prosperous future for our families and for all Ontarians.
This year’s RANA magazine provides a great way to reflect upon past accomplishments of
Ontario’s Rajasthani-Canadian community, while looking forward to new opportunities.

Community-based newspapers and magazines are an integral part of our diverse media and
represent an important source of information for many Canadians. RANA’s magazine plays a

Diwali – The Festival of Lights
May I take this opportunity to offer my best wishes to the Rajasthan
Association of North America (RANA Canada), as you celebrate “Diwali –
the Festival of Lights”.
Diwali is a time when the faithful light diyas – small clay pots filled with oil
– to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual. The festival is
a joyous occasion marked with fireworks and light displays; presentation of
flowers; sharing of sweets; wearing of new clothes; and worship. While the
stories behind Diwali vary, its essence is the same – to rejoice in the inner
light, the underlying reality of all things.
As a Member of Parliament, for many years I have worked closely with
members of different communities that celebrate Diwali. I have been
privileged to visit many of these countries and know that Diwali is an
important festival in the religious life of millions of people throughout the
world.
Congratulations to the organizing committee on a job well done.

North America (RANA Canada).
Once again, RANA Canada had a remarkable year of achievement. As the Honorary Patron for
RANA Canada, it has been my pleasure to work closely with members of the association and to
create strong bonds of friendship and cooperation.
This year, RANA is one of the sponsors of the 12th National Diwali Celebration, which will be
held on November 1, 2012 in Ottawa. I am very pleased to have RANA’s valuable support in
organizing this important annual event, which will be attended by Prime Minister Stephen
Harper.
Canada is home to a vibrant Indo-Canadian community, among them many illustrious Indo-
Canadians of Rajasthani origin. They form part of the rich mosaic of cultures that make up our
great nation. I have a personal connection to Rajasthan as well because my spouse, Neena, and
her family hail from the region.
RANA Canada and its members have consistently worked hard to promote and preserve the
culture, heritage, and traditions of Rajasthan. In the process, they have created a wonderful
showcase for Indian and Rajasthani heritage and have contributed towards Canadians’ greater
understanding of this dynamic community.

“It is with great pleasure that I send greetings to everyone celebrating Diwali. During this
festival of lights, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists gather with family to celebrate the victory
of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Within our communities
we must join together to share the light of tolerance, understanding, and care for others to
help create a better Canada for all. These are values that are shared by all Canadians,
regardless of faith.
Our desire to build a better world unites us as one people — not in spite of our differences, but
with full respect for them. Here in Canada, as winter arrives and the days grow shorter, the
flames from the diyas allow us to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for in this country.

RANA (Canada)’s Annual Magazine has received a lot of traction and has been well-appreciated
in the past two years. This year, however, we decided to change it up a bit
while still keeping the ever-popular sections.
You will be able to experience the oldies but goodies, such as photographs from RANA
events over the past year, delectable recipes, inspiring articles, amazing experiences and
stories of Rajasthan. In addition to a refreshing new look, we have a number of articles
and poems in Hindi and a collage of newspaper articles covering RANA events. It was
a great year for us both in Canada and India, which is evident through the amount
of media coverage we received – the collage is just the trailer. You will also notice that
as RANA is flying high, our members, including both our children and youth, have
accomplished a lot over the years. Their personal and professional achievements are
what make us a proud RANA family.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson has rightly said:
“Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a
character; sow a character, reap a destiny.”
This magazine also started with just a thought and continues to achieve its mission of
protecting Rajasthan’s culture and heritage.
As always, I urge you to contribute more towards our annual magazine, either through

Taking a lead from RANA (USA) five years back, a few
illustrious Indo-Canadians of Rajasthani origin, formed
RANA (Canada). RANA (Canada) was to be a driving
force to promote, propagate and preserve the incredibly
rich Rajasthani culture, heritage, traditions and values
and simultaneously instill these in the present and future
generations of Indo-Canadian-Rajasthanis.
RANA (Canada) is an incorporated not-for-profit organi-zation
in the Province of Ontario, providing a dedicated
platform to create a strong sense of community among
Indo-Canadians of Rajasthani descent. It tirelessly aug-ments
Canada’s strength and ability for embracing every
culture in creating an inclusive dynamic, global society
proud of its various languages, histories, ancestries and
cultures.
“The present has a responsibility towards the past and
the future, it has to preserve the culture, heritage, and
values of the past and pass it on to the future.”
This Eternal Pearl of Divine Wisdom spelled by Lord Shri
Krishna as transcribed in the Great Indian Epic Mahab-harata
forms the central core of RANA’s Philosophy of
Action and all its endeavours and efforts are inspired and
driven with this sombre touch and sense.
With the above axiom as it’s touch-stone, RANA (Can-ada)
is vibrantly and dynamically moving forward to-wards
its tryst to meet its objectives under the visionary
stewardship of its energetic and infectiously enthusiastic
President Yogesh K.Sharma along with dedicated team of
Patrons, Directors, Conveners and Members.
“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle
and the life of a candle will not be shortened. Happiness
always increases being shared.” - Buddha
RANA members had celebrated all festivals and events
together with great spirit of sharing and spreading happi-ness
in the community.
Diwali Milan was celebrated on October 29, 2011 at
Dreams Convention Centre with full joy and in a holy
spirit. Diwali is a beautiful festival of lights, exchanging
of gifts, seeking divine blessings of Goddess of wealth
(Laxmi Puja). This is one of the main festivals of Hindus
which is celebrated all over India and marked as a victory
of good over evil. The event was very well coordinated
by Mr. Brij Sharma, Mr. Satya Agarwal and their team.
This big event’s main attraction was ‘Mera Apna Vanvas’
as Ram Gatha (a play on modern times) brought in by
Sujata Deengar, and Prerna Khandelwal. The play was
performed by RANA family. Ganesh Vandana was also
performed by RANA kids. All members enjoyed the eve-ning
with dance, delicious dinner and cultural perfor-mances.
RANA’s main vision is to promote Rajasthani culture and
to cultivate its beauty and authenticity to new generation
so they can also enjoy and know the flavor and benefits of
their roots. The year of 2012 was full of enthusiasm, lots
of activities, entertainment and networking events.
The year began with patriotic feelings which poured in to
celebrate India’s Republic Day on Saturday, January 28,
2012 at Vedic Cultural Centre. RANA Canada, Patanjali
Yog Samiti Toronto, Sanatan Mandir Cultural Centre,
Arya Samaj Markham jointly celebrated Republic Day of
India with full patriotic enthusiasm at Arya Samaj Ve-dic
Cultural Centre Markham. Ms.Asha Gupta and Mr.
Sukhlal Patel did a commendable job as event coordina-tors.
RANA’s young members had showed their talent
in cultural events. Ganesh Vandana was performed by
RANA kids who were dressed in traditional Rajasthani
attire.
RANA members celebrated ‘festival of colours - Holi’ on
March 11, 2012 in association with ‘Vishwa Hindi Sanst-han’
at Bharat Mata Mandir. Everyone enjoyed the Holi’s
Rajasthan Association of North America 2012-2013 Publication 17
20. special drink- Thandai, lunch and cultural programs.
Mr.Gyanesh Paliwal, Prof. Saran Ghai, Ms. Jaya Shree
Vyas and their team co ordinated the event. All mem-bers
put colourful ‘gulal’ (a symbol of love, respect
friendship which eliminates any ill feeling from your
heart) to each other.
RANA Ladies celebrated ‘Gangaur puja’ on March
25, 2012 at Guru Mandir Temple Etobicoke. The fol-lowing
news was covered in Indian express as ‘ RANA
members celebrated Gangour festival’ - “Gangour is
celebrated all over Rajasthan. Now it is being feted in
the Greater Toronto Area. The Rajasthan Association
of North America (RANA) celebrated the festival in
a traditional manner. The event on March 25 began
with a traditional Rajasthani breakfast of Doodh and
Jalebi followed by Gangaur pooja, music and dance.
“Gan represents Lord Shiva and Gaur represents God-dess
Gauri or Parvati, His consort. Gauri is considered
to be the Goddess of marital happiness and conjugal
bliss. Mainly the festival for maidens and ladies, they
worship her for good husbands and the welfare, health
and long life of their husbands respectively. While the
women performed and offered prayers in a custom-ary
manner, a number of participants also performed
Rajasthani folk dances.” It was a hugely appreciated
event thanks to organizers Ms. Gauri Goel and Ms.
Taruna Poddar.
This year RANA’s picnic was organized at ‘Insifil’
Beach on July 2, 2012. It was a day of fun, masti and
a memorable outing. All members relished delicious
Rajasthani special food – ‘Dal - Bati –Churma. It was
a memorable outing since the weather was perfect and
the picnic site was beautiful. Children, adults and
seniors all had a fantastic time. Kids, youth and the
adults were all involved in the various games organised
by the co-ordinators. This event was well organised
by Mr. Deepak Mantri, Mr.Dilip Sharma, Ms. Prerna
Khandelwal and their team.
RANA‘s members had celebrated India’s Indepen-dence
day with Panorama India with the support of
Consulate General of India. The India Day Festival
and Grand Parade was organized in celebration of In-dia’s
66th Independence Day on August 11, 2012 at
Yonge and Dundas Square. The High Commissioner,
His Excellency, Mr. S.M Gavai was present during the
flag hoisting ceremony at Yonge and Dundas Square.
Hon’ble Premier of Ontario and other dignitaries
from the provincial and federal Government also at-tended
the flag hoisting ceremony. RANA’S members
participated in parade with full of patriotic feelings
and RANA won the second prize for the Parade. Ms.
Prerna Khandelwal, Ms.Swati Singhal, Ms.Ritika Garg
and their team had organized this event. Our youth
members and kids stole the show by their spectacular
dance performances.
RANA (CANADA) also celebrated India’s Indepen-dence
Day on August 19, 2012. RANA had jointly
celebrated with five other community organizations
- Agarwals Based in Canada (ABC), Patanjali Yog
Samiti, Toronto, Sanatan Mandir Cultural Centre, Ve-dic
Cultural Centre- VCC at Markham Civic Centre
. RANA Youth performed cultural programs during
these celebrations. Mr.Ram Gupta,Ms. Rajni Tekriwal
and their team coordinated this event very well.
Israeli and Rajasthani Music Culture Event was cel-ebrated
on September 6, 2012. This was a milestone
event for the Israeli and Rajasthani music culture. Both
countries are home to a rich history, a vibrant culture
and a shared commitment to educate research and in-novation,
to enhance entrepreneurship opportunities.
A memorable evening celebrated the fusion of Israeli
and Indian music culture featured internationally re-nowned
Shye Ben Tzur and the Rajasthani Express.
This was a young professional networking event with
delicious food, music, dance and art and was coordi-nated
by Hemant Pawar and his team.
“As a soil however rich may be cannot be productive with-out
cultivation so the mind without culture never pro-duces
good fruit.” - Seneca
The culture is a way we think, act or live. It’s a show-case
of ourselves. We have one life only to live. We
can paint it with colourful memories or events and
can spread positive awareness to make a happy, healthy
community.
RANA is a platform that provides an opportunity to turn
ideas into action. In a short span of time, through hosting
family events and other forms of community building and
support activities, RANA is flying really high.

22. Know first aid to combat extreme
weather conditions

Growing up in Rajasthan, I always knew that we had
one extreme weather to combat with- the scorching
heat in the months of May and June. The rest of the
year, we Rajasthanis were pretty lucky to have a beauti-ful
weather. In fact, the almost all-year round condu-cive
climate was one of the reason that tourism and
film industry flourished in this part of the subconti-nent.
As Rajasthanis, we all know that we should keep our
bodies covered from direct sunlight by using scarves,
dupattas, cotton gloves and sun glasses and use an um-brella
if walking. We drink a lot of water and liquids or
juicy fruits which are known to keep our bodies cool. I
still remember the school mini-bus and autos stopping
by the “piyuaaus”- little thatched huts where some old
woman would offer us cold pitcher water in return for
a small donation and thereby earning a living. Times
have changed; air-conditioned cars and cold drinks are
the new trend in big cities like Jaipur or Jodhpur.
Living in Canada, we are not much affected by the
warm weather in the summer months because this is
the “pleasant” weather we have known back home.
However, the kids born in this country don’t respond
to the summer months as their Rajasthani parents do.
So, it will be a good idea to know some basics about
dealing with Hyperthermia or heat stroke.
Heat Cramps: Painful muscle cramps primarily
in the legs and abdomen, caused by losing too much
water and salt through sweating (usually related to ex-cessive
physical activity in hot weather). They are not
serious and can be reversed with some basic first aid.
Ensure the person is put at rest in a cool place and
given as much water as possible in small amounts so as
not to cause nausea.
Heat Exhaustion: More serious then heat
cramps, the symptoms include: excessive sweating,
dilated pupils, complaints of dizziness blurred vision,
headaches, cramps, they may also have cold, clammy
skin, a weak rapid pulse, rapid shallow breathing,
vomiting and possibly may go unconscious. Medical
assistance is required for this degree of heat exposure.
The first action should always be to remove the person
to a cool location.
Heatstroke (Sunstroke): This is a life-threat-ening
condition, without immediate action heatstroke
can result in permanent brain damage or death. If
heatstroke is suspected seek medical attention imme-diately
or call 911. Symptoms of heatstroke include;
a rapid and full pulse that gets weaker and harder to
feel in later stages, noisy breathing, flushed skin, hot
and dry skin or hot and sweaty skin (when heatstroke
is related to exertion), restlessness, a headache, fatigue,
dizziness, nausea, vomiting, convulsions and eventu-ally
unconsciousness. It is critical that the body tem-perature
is lowered as quickly as possible; cover them
with a wet sheet and fan them, immerse them in cool
not cold water (watch them closely for any changes) or
sponge them with cool water particularly in the arm-pits
neck and groin, most importantly seek medical
attention.
Now, the other critical situation is hyperthermia. The
first snow looks all romantic and could woo any Raj-asthani’s
heart who has probably never witnessed the
snowy flakes forming a white cottonish blanket all
round us in the winter months. However, it is not just
mild snow for Canadians. The romance melts down
once the black ice takes over the landscape around us
and wind chill gets to our bones. How do you prepare
yourself to fight the dark winter months?

There are three stages of hypothermia people should
be aware of mild, moderate and severe;
The symptoms of hypothermia are often confused
for drunkenness, stroke or drug abuse. If you suspect
someone is suffering from hypothermia get medical
help immediately.
Cover exposed Skin with suitable clothing or covers;
make sure the head is well insulated.
Adjust the casualty’s clothing to keep the wind or
drafts out. Wrap the casualty in something windproof
– reflective “space blankets” and plastic garbage bags
are good for this.
If possible, move the casualty out of the cool or cold
environment. If you cannot move indoors, protect the
casualty from the wind.
Wet clothing causes severe heat loss. If you are in a
shelter and have a dry change of clothes, gently replace
wet clothes with dry ones. If you are not in a shelter,

place the dry clothes over the wet ones. If you don’t
have dry clothes, press as much water out of the wet
clothes as possible and wrap the casualty in something
windproof.
Warning! Handle the casualty very
gently and keep them horizontal is pos-sible,
the heart beat is very delicate and
can stop with rough handling. Don’t give
the casualty any alcohol, coffee or other
drinks containing caffeine and don’t allow them to
smoke – this will increase heat loss. Don’t rub the
casualty’s body to improve circulations, this will cause
cold blood to back to the body core and cool the body
further.

बाहर अपने पूरे कलेिर में िल –िूल रही है| भारि से
बाहर हर िेश में एक छयोटा सा भारि बसा है| हर राजय
की छटा तनखर कर अपने - अपने िजूि का पररचय िे
रही है|
आसान नहीं है, अपना बसा- बसाया नीड़, गचर –पररगचि
लयोग और िािािरण छयोड़कर एक नए धरािल पर नई
शुरुआि करना | सीधी मलखी -मलखाई ककिाब ियो कयोई
पढ़ ले पर ्या कयोई कम्थ का लेखा पढ़ सकिा है? अगर
सिलिा पानी है ियो उसे खुि मलखना है | मलखना आसान
नहीं है ्योंकक जयो भागय,कम्थ - लेखा मलखा जा चुका
है िही अक्षर-ब-अक्षर बबना िेखे मलखना है | सांसाररक
परीक्षा ियो पहले पढ़ाई जािी है किर उसे ही पननों पर
उिारना है| पर यह लेखा खुि ही मलखना है और पररणाम
भी खुि ही जांचना है| किर भी इस अनजान ककिाब कयो
पढ़ने का मयोह सभी कयो रहिा है| वििेशी आकष्थण और
अपनी संसकृति की जीिनििा में एक नई संसकृति की
शुरुआि हयोिी है|
गांि – कसबा –शहर – नगर – महानगर - िेश – वििेश | ये
कड़ी जजिनी लंबी हयोिी जािी है, उिना ही हमारा मानस
िृहि हयोिा जािा है| विचारों कयो, चीजों कों, घटनाओं
कयो िेखने, आंकने का नजररया बिल जािा है| हम और
पररप्ि हयोि ेजाि े हैं| जयो नहीं बिलि,े िे बाहर आकर
भी अपने संकुगचि मानस में बंि रह जािे हैं और हर
जगह िुखी ही रहिे हैं| रहिे यहीं हैं, िशक के िशक भी
तनकल जािे है ियो भी न िे यहाँ से िालमेल कर पािे हैं
और न ही िापस लौट पािे हैं|
नई पीढ़ी के मलए यह चुनौिी जयािा है कक िे अपनी
जड़ों से जुड़े रहें सार ही आज के आधुतनक युग की मांग
के सार भी सामंजसय कर सकें| हमारा यह कि्थवय है
कक हम अपनी कम्थ -भूमम के काययों, तनयमों कयो धयान
में रखिे हुए नई पीढ़ी के संघष्थ कयो िेखिे हुए उनकी
सहायिा करें|
तनषकष्थ यह है कक अपनी एक मुट्ी संसकृति लानी जरूरी
है,उसे यहाँ हरा -भरा और खुशहाल बनाना है िाकक हमारी
आगे आने िाली पीदढयां उसे आतमसाि करें और आगे
बढ़ायें | जरूरी यह भी है कक सार ही हमें वििेश में अपनी
कम्थ- भूमम से सामंजसय करिे हुए आगे बढ़ना है, अपनी

कैसा पति-पतनी में हयोिा पयार है,
और मैं कहिा हूँ िैसा ही मधुर
जैसा हयोिा नींबू का आचार है।
खट्ा, मीठा, चरपरा, नमकीन कुछ,
सिाि की, सुसिाि की बौछार है,
सार खाने के इसे खािे रहें,
टेसट कर िेिा डबल हर बार है।
ठीक िैसा ही है पति-पतनी का पयार,
जजिना कीजे उिना कमिर यार है,
अनमलममट कीजे कक जजिना कर सकें,
किर भी रहिी हर घड़ी िरकार है।
जजंिगी ग़र सघन, सुंिर बाग है,
पयार बहिी सि्थ-गम्थ बयार है,
पति-पतनी, पयार और पररिार इक,
जैसे खाना, पानी और आचार है।
करिे हैं पूरी कमी और िुगुना सिाि,
यही ियो ियो अनकहा सा करार है।
जजंिगी भर सार का संबंध है,
खट्े-मीठे पयार का अनुबंध है,
कौन सी पररभाषा में हम बांधे इसे,
पयार है, सुविधा है, या कक प्बंध है।
कुछ भी कदहये पयार इक पररिार का,
जैसे नैया, नीर और पििार है,

62. Appetizing Chutneys

Ginger Chutney
Ingredients:
1 medium or large sized ball of tamarind
5 tsp. salt 2.5 cups water
1.5 tsp. sugar ½ lb. ginger
1 cup sweetened coconut
4-5 chillies to taste Chopped cilantro leaves
Seasoning:
1/3 cup oil ½ tsp. fenugreek
1 tsp channa dal added to regular seasoning ingredi-ents
Method:
Soak tamarind in 1 cup water. Peel ginger and cut into
pieces. Extract the pulp from tamarind using another
half cup of water. Grind all the ingredients until soft;
add salt, sugar, coconut and cilantro. Season the chut-ney.
Remove and store in refrigerator. It can be stored
for 1 month. This tastes good with idli, dosa, vada,
samosa and bhaji.
Brinjal (Eggplant) Chutney
Ingredients:
4 dry red chillies (or fresh green chillies)
Salt to taste
1 whole garlic bulb (ground or grated)
Small ball of tamarind
1 small piece of ginger (peeled ground or grated)
Oil
1 large brinjal (eggplant)
1 large onion, finely chopped
Pinch of hing
Method:
Steam eggplant, remove skin, mash and set aside.
Combine: 4 dry red chillies (or fresh green chillies), 1
whole garlic (ground or grated), 1 small piece of gin-ger
and salt to taste.
Add the juice of a small ball of tamarind, mix. Add the
mashed eggplant and mix well. Set aside.
In a pan, fry onion in little oil until golden brown.
Add hing. Fry a little and add eggplant mixture. Con-tinue
frying and stirring until desired consistency.

63. Cranberry Chutney
Ingredients:
1 pack fresh cranberries Pinch of asafoetida
1 tbsp. methi seeds Salt to taste
1 tbsp. black mustard seeds
2 tsp. chilli powder ¼ cup vegetable oil
Method:
Wash cranberries and chop coarsely in a food proces-sor.
Dry roast methi seeds in a skillet and grind to a
powder. In a large pan, fry mustard seeds in hot oil
and add hing. Add chopped cranberries stirring con-stantly
for about 5-6 minutes. Add more oil if neces-sary.
In the end, stir in methi powder, salt and chilli
powder. Cool and store in preserve bottles. Chutney
can be kept for about 3 months in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
1 cup - Split (Yellow) Moong dhal
1/2 cup Ghee
3/4 cup Sugar
1cup Milk or Water
Sliced Almonds for garnish.
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
few strands of Saffron
Method
• Soak 1 cup moong dal for 5-6 hours and grind to
a coarse paste.
• Take a heavy Kadai/ Non stick skillet.add ghee
and warm it up.
• Add the dal paste and stir continuously, not al-lowing
lumps to form.
• Keep the heat at the lowest and keep stirring.
Cook the dal until aromatic and sweet smell
comes and the ghee start to show.the color
should be golden brown.
• other side,boil milk or water and add saffron and
cardamom to it.Add this slowly to the cooking
dal.
• Keep the heat low at all times and break lumps if
formed while adding water/ milk mix.
• When it start to dry a little ,add sugar.
• Cook until the ghee surfaces and halwa gets a
shiny creamy texture.
• Garnish with sliced almonds and serve hot!!

71. Kuldhara near Jaisalmer:

Drive 18 km west of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India and
you will come to the village of Kuldhara. The first
sight of Kuldhara village gives a sense of a town actu-ally
and sends one’s imagination running to the time it
may have been inhabited. Tej Pal Singh, our cab driver
was happy to be our guide.
A well planned settlement, straight and wide streets
ran in grids with houses opening into them. All design
elements kept both aesthetics and utility in mind. A
kind of a garage opened into the streets to park carts
in. Temples, step wells and other structures were all
signs of sound development over the centuries.
courtyard was the designated area for women. It had
a small bathtub and a small structure to grow a tulsi
plant, revered by Hindus. The outer area was for men
and cows. An underground cellar was used to store
valuables, but these lie sealed now. In fact, a few west-erners
are said to have discovered a lot of gold and
other valuables with the help of metal detectors a few
years back; they were apprehended before they could
make off with the booty though.
The yellow hue of the buildings came from the colour
of the local mud and stones. The floors of the houses

The village may be abandoned now, but it still seems
alive. As if, without warning, you will suddenly see
thousands of well decked wealthy people appear out of
nowhere and generate a hustle and bustle just like the
days gone by.
Once a prosperous settlement of the Paliwal Brah-mins,
all the residents of Kuldhara and 83 nearby vil-lages
vanished suddenly one night in 1825, having
lived there since 1291. In all likelihood they set up
base somewhere beyond Jodhpur but no one has ever
been sure. This is one of the most bizarre stories of
human migration one can hear.
the art of growing a water intensive crop like wheat in
the Thar desert; they could identify areas with gypsum
rock layers running under the ground surface to ensure
water was retained for the crops. The rulers depended
on the Paliwals for much of their tax revenues.
What made them want to abandon everything over-night?
The Prime Minister, or the dewan, is believed to
have developed a lecherous eye for the chief ’s daughter;
it is said the Paliwal women were in general stunningly
beautiful. He may even have imposed unreasonable
taxes on them. With pride and honour overruling all
worldly interests, the chiefs of the 84 villages decided
to go away in a single night with whatever they could
carry with them.
Where are the Paliwals now? Scattered all over the
world. And generally doing well going by their genetic
lineage. It is said they even left a curse on the villages,
bringing death and suffering to anyone who tried to
live in these villages. For the Paliwals, this was not the
first migration. Before Kuldhara, according to some
accounts, they had left Pali near Jodhpur from where
they originally came from and that is why they were
called Pali Walai , Pali Wala and finally Paliwal ; it was
to escape additional war taxes being imposed by the
king.

75. Pavapuri
An oasis of spiritualism in the desert
Pavapuri at Day Time
During my trip to India this year I went to many plac-es.
But there is one specific place I visited which stands
out and I want to share about it with you. That place
is called ‘Pavapuri’ - a fantastic place of religion and
nature. A truly great spiritual place.
Pavapuri is a temple located in the Sirohi district of
Rajasthan. it was so clean and well preserved. The en-trance
was a grand gate with exquisite carvings which
was amazing to look at. The first thing that you notice
when you enter is the well preserved natural beauty.
Birds glide through the trees and there are green fields
around. There were life size statues of cows and people
doing different jobs. When you enter the main com-plex,
you see the gigantic Jain tirth (a shallow part of a
body of water that may be easily crossed) surrounded
by smaller temples and pillars - a truly stunning sight.
Inside the complex was a separate building with large,
clean rooms that can be reserved for accommodation.
After we checked in, we went around the building
which was surrounded by sprawling lawns and small
trees. We then took a tour of the whole complex. We
found out that the complex had an animal welfare
centre that spans over 71,000 square feet and pro-vides
shelter for more than 6,000 stray and orphan
cows. Pavapuri was also home to the world’s only 5
legged cow! With four on the bottom and one on its
back! The priest told us that everyone that came to
Pavapuri fed the cows with milk as an offering to God.
My family and I all fed the baby cows for good luck.
The cow that I fed drank a whole bottle of milk! One
of my cousins was feeding a baby cow when his milk
bottle finished. As my cousin put down the bottle to
get cleaned, the cow started following my cousin as if
it was expecting more milk. Before you know it, the
cow was chasing my cousin! The cow chased him for 5
minutes! We started laughing and taking videos of this
funny moment.
At Pavapuri, you can also take Golf cart, Vintage car,
camel and horse rides around the complex. When you
are on the camel, you are towering everyone else. I ac-tually
got a leaf from the top of one of the trees when
I was on the camel. The scariest part of the ride was
when you got off. That’s because it feels as if you are
falling when the camel’s bending its knees. My brother
got to ride the horse. He said that he felt royal and
powerful on it.
What I think is most unique in this temple is that on
one side of the complex, there are statues of real events
behind a glass displays. The reason that I think these
are unique is that I have never them in other temples
and that you can actually see what the statue is repre-senting.
We then went to the tirth. On the outside, it was crisp
white. Inside the tirth there was a statue of Shankhesh-war
Parshwanath. It was quite a great sight. But the
tirth looked better at night. When it was dark and the
lights were turned on, the tirth turned from white to a
red-orange, making it look even more stunning.
Warm and fresh vegetarian breakfast, lunch, dinner is
served within the dining hall at additional cost.

76. Pavapuri at Night Time
Shree Pavapuri Tirth Dham is a shining example of
Jain Temple Architecture and Culture. It is a beautiful
blend of art and architecture, enshrined in pure values
that have percolated through generations. A visit here
is therapeutic for the mind, body and soul. The calm,
beautiful, scenic and vast complex of Pavapuri sits en-sconced
amidst the contemplative Aravali Mountain
range that sits like a determined yogi in meditation.
If you ever travel to India, you should consider visiting
Pavapuri. It is a beautiful place to be in and has very
unique things that you wouldn’t find in other temples.
With beautiful carvings, temples, and more, it is a
peaceful location and you will come back feeling very
relaxed. It a true place of spirituality and culture!

Short story - Dina, The Mean Dragon

Once upon a time, there lived a dragon named Dina.
She always liked to sneak up on people she didn’t
like. She hated everybody. Even her mom and dad.
There was another dragon named Ramona. She was
gentle, lovely, and also Dina’s sister. She tried to
tell her that “STOP”. But, her sister ignored her.
One day, something bad happened to Dina. Every-body
hated her. Everyone teased her. Dina slowly
started to notice that, she was doing the same to every-one
she hated. She felt bad for herself. She apologized
to everyone she treated badly. After she apologized to
everyone, she apologized to her sister, Ramona. Ra-mona
kept a secret from her big sister, Dina. Ramona
thought that “this is the right time to tell Dina.” She
went over to Dina and told the secret.”I invited the
town over to the forest where you never sneak up on
people, because you were scared that animals will at-tack
on you. I wanted you to be nice, so I told them to
do the same you did to them, to make you understand
how it hurts when you get hurt, I just wanted you to
be nice, that’s all. Please forgive me.”” I forgive you”
said Dina.”I am proud of you, little sister”
Dina became nicer every day. The town was the most
peaceful town in the whole Canada. They lived hap-pily
ever after.
