When I recall the memories of my father Emílio, my grandfather
Manuel and my great-grandfather Sebastian, who founded the
company in 1853, I am filled with saudade and great pride of this
love affair: Ramirez & Cª (Filhos), SA.
I remember my father’s affection and commitment to his factories,
to the well-being of his employees, and to protecting the compa-
ny’s good reputation. From him, who guided me morally and pro-
fessionally, I learned that my grandfather and great-grandfather
had had a similar passion and defended the same principles. And
that, for me, explains our reality!
Only Man can give scope and life to a project. Empty fish mar-
kets, without boats, are desolate and sad places, which even the
seagulls forsake. Factories at a standstill are humid and nostalgic
spaces, devoid of any life or human warmth. Each one of us de-
pends on the work of our neighbour. Therefore, my gratitude goes
to the people of the sea, who bravely fish for us; as well as all our
staff, who with endeavour and enthusiasm, have shared the work
and successes with us; and also our clients, for the preference
and loyalty they have honoured us with.

In the Portuguese economy, the canning
of fish has occupied a relevant indisput-
able place. No one is in doubt as to the
national interest in the continuity of this in-
dustry that contributes to the social-eco-
nomic balance of countless fishing com-
munities along the Portuguese coast and
represents an important inflow of foreign
currency. While it is true that this indus-
try stamped its mark on the history and
development of many cities on the Portu-
guese coast, it is no less true that, from
among the companies that developed this
industrial activity, some do stand out, not
only for the quality of their products, but
above all for their strategic vision. Among
them is Ramirez & Cia (Filhos), SA – the
oldest cannery in the world in operation
– to whom competitive strategy, together
with a strong family desire to always do
more and better, forms a structural vector
of its long life.
From Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) to
Matosinhos, passing through Olhão, Albu-
feira, Setúbal and Peniche, the industrial
and commercial activity of Ramirez is full
of remarkable events. As the first cannery
to operate in the country, VRSA is granted
the statute of birthplace of the canning in-
dustry.
When it applied the principles discovered
by Nicholas Appert and, later, theorised by
Pasteur, it made fundamental changes in
the concept of food preservation in Por-
tugal. At the beginning of the last century,
Ramirez started exporting its products
and launched the first steam sardine fish-
ing galleon, the Nossa Senhora da Encar-
nação.
In the 30s, one of its managers was also a
pioneer in the corporative organisation of
the sector. In the 70s, the easy-open cans
came into being as a result of its present
owner’s, Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez, ob-
sessive desire to serve well.

SGS, one of the most respected companies in the world in
