Kyron Tryon, the only African American student in his eighth grade class, was picked up and thrown to the ground by seven white classmates who were chanting "KKK". When questioned, the white boys said it was just a game. Kyron's parents filed a complaint with the ACLU and Michigan Department of Civil Rights. The school district worked with Kyron's family to develop a plan to provide a better environment for students of color, including MLK Day symposiums to promote understanding differences. The ACLU helps protect civil liberties for marginalized groups.
