Rabindranath tagore
1. 1. Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta in 1861. He was the youngest son of Maharishi
Debendranath Tagore. Though the attended several schools in his childhood, he received most of his
education at home. His mothers’s when he was only 15 gave him a rude shock. In 1878 he was sent
to England for future study. These he stayed with his elder brother Satyendranath Tagore and his
family at Brighton. But he returned to India within two years without obtaining any degree. In 1912
he sailed for England the third time. By then he had already attained eminence.
2. In 1913 Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his collection of poems ‘Gitanjali’.
Several Universities including the Oxford University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of
Literature. In1915 he was knighted by the Government of India, but he renounced the title of ‘Sir’
after Jalianwala Bagh tragedy of 1919.
