Measuring the risk of Business As Usual energy and the Value of Renewables for Mining. New financial metrics and Key Performance Indicators to measure renewables.
During the commodity boom, mining companies were focused on ramping up production and investing in new capital projects to expand supply. It was a time when the income statement was the key management paradigm in mining economics. Now, however, the global mining industry has refocused on cost control and capital discipline. Investors today value firms based less on how much they mine and more on how efficiently they do so, and how well they mitigate risk. In this new scenario, nonconventional renewable energy (NCRE) sources such as biomass crops, smallhydro, geothermal plants, concentrated solar power mirrors, wind turbines or solar panels can lower energy risks in mining. Why? Because renewable facilities act as mining assets whereas business as usual (BAU) energy options such as coal, diesel and gas, and even conventional hydro, become mining liabilities.

Island States: Renewable Energy Policy PioneersLeonardo ENERGY
This session is part of the Clean Energy Regulators Initiative Webinar Programme.
Theme 9 - Energy Access
Module 4 - Island States
As the cost of renewable energy technologies (RETs) has declined in recent years, many jurisdictions around the world are now faced with a market in which customer-sited generation is cheaper than power from the grid, a transformation that will have significant implications for renewable electricity (RE) development in the years ahead. Rather than paying a cost-based price for RE generation (as under many feed-in tariffs), or allowing onsite generation to be credited at the full retail rate (as under net metering) – two common approaches in mainland markets – island jurisdictions are beginning to introduce new kinds of policies to adapt to a world in which customer-sited RETs can generate power more cost-effectively than centralized supply options. Nowhere is this transformation more apparent than in island grids, where imported diesel and/or heavy fuel oil often result in generation costs above USD $0.50/kWh.
As this innovation advances, island jurisdictions are becoming policy laboratories, showcasing new ways of attempting to balance the solvency of the electricity system (including generation, transmission, and distribution) with the rapid rise of customer-sited generation. In the process, this webinar will examine whether island jurisdictions are indeed pointing the way forward, and if so, what it could mean for the future of renewable electricity policy.
Webinar: Global Status of CCS: 2014 - Driving development in the Asia Pacific Global CCS Institute
The Global CCS Institute launched The Global Status of CCS: 2014 report on 5 November 2014.
2014 has been a pivotal year for CCS as it is now a reality in the power industry. The Global Status of CCS: 2014 report provides a comprehensive overview of global and regional developments in CCS technologies and the policies, laws and regulations that must drive the demonstration and deployment of technologies to support global climate mitigation efforts.
Clare Penrose, the Institute's General Manager - Asia Pacific presented a summary of the report and discuss the key recommendations, an important reference for decision makers for the year ahead.
Ms Penrose was joined by the Institute’s subject matter experts who were available to answer questions:
Chris Consoli: CO2 Storage
Ian Havercroft: CCS Laws and Regulations
Lawrence Irlam: CCS Policy and Economics
Jessica Morton: CCS Public Engagement
Tony Zhang: CO2 Capture
Deswik-IPCC2013 Presentation-Scenario based analysis of IPCC trade-offsDeswik
This presentation was delivered by Deswik at the I-M Mining IPCC 2013 conference on 14th October 2013.
The presentation outlines a recommended approach for assessing the viability of In Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) for mining operations. The key point is that modelling MUST include both the proposed system as well as other conventional fleet areas of the mine, modelled as a single system. This allows identification of system interactions and fatal flaws that are evident only in a combined mine plan model.
In previous years multiple presentations called for development of mine planning software that is capable of effective IPCC planning. Deswik commenced work in February 2013 on addressing this need, and have formed a partnership with industry experts RWE to ensure the result is fit for purpose. This presentation illustrates techniques that use the first results of this endeavour.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
