- Good evening and thank you for coming tonight. Before we get started, we’d like you to participate in a short exercise. The simple act of a greeting – facial expressions, making eye contact, saying hello -- are incredible challenging for a child with autism and the reason we created Robots4Autism.
- RoboKind has been a leader in the robotics industry for years. Our robot, Milo, is innovatively designed around the strengths of children with autism. He engages them quickly and motivates them intrinsically. - Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S., with an annual growth rate of nearly 17%. Autism affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys. These children have tremendous difficulty with communication, emotions, and social and behavioral interactions. Traditional therapy can help these children understand, learn and practice simple concepts such as greeting a friend. But traditional methods can take a long time and are not always successful because children with autism do not easily connect with other people and don’t do well in an environment they find even the smallest bit threatening. We created Robots4Autism to provide an effective tool that children with autism want to engage and will promote learning in less time.
- Let’s look at the benefits of Milo through the eyes of Ryan and his therapist. Ryan has had great difficulty developing a relationship with adults at school and in therapy. But the moment he was introduced to Milo he felt at ease almost immediately because Milo is nonthreatening. Ryan is intrigued by how the robot works and easily engaged into a lesson on how and why to give a greeting. Not only does Milo deliver the lessons, but he records the sessions live for later playback. Milo patented software allows him to notice when a child is losing interest and changes tactics to reengage the child and resume learning. Staff appreciate the improvement they see in students and the visual therapy record.
