What if? The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi)
The Treaty of Waitangi was a written agreement signed in 1840 between British representatives and over 500 Māori chiefs to allow them to live together under a common set of laws in New Zealand. However, the Māori and British had different understandings of the treaty, which led to conflicts. The treaty established New Zealand as a British colony and made Māori British subjects. However, some Māori chiefs changed their minds about signing due to expectations of how it would affect their tribes in the future. Without the treaty, the Māori would have been in a weaker position and at risk from other colonizing powers, and the British would not have been able to claim New Zealand land.
Ways of knowing presentation
