Large companies have been caught abusing their power and deceiving consumers in several ways such as by creating fake positive reviews, violating privacy policies, and rigging contests. Specifically, Walmart employees posed as normal customers online, Sony created a fake blog to promote their PSP, and marketing companies have used "meat puppets," "sock puppets," and other deceptive tactics. Additionally, privacy violations have occurred through MySpace not protecting underage user profiles, AOL releasing search information, and food companies collecting child data without permission. Some contests have also been called into question like a video contest winner being accused of plagiarism and a Chevy ad contest receiving negative submissions on gas prices and global warming.
