Q1
Evaluation Deborah oyelade.

In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or
CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?

Our opening sequence uses codes and conventions of real
movies and also challenges and develops some conventions.
Our film fragmental is based around the youth crime genre. It
shows conventions from other films that I have seen in this
genre: kidult hood, Adulthood, How she move and Step up.
These films are similar to our opening sequence because it
either has the same genre or a similar narrative. In the opening
sequence we se a young girl who is getting ready for school, just
like any other young girl will do. As the sequence continues, the
audiences image of the character changes when we see her pull
out a knife and cry... We made our opening sequence this way
so that we could engage the audience in the short time we had.
We did this by using typical conventions of this genre which
made it easily recognisable as youth crime genre by the use of
the hooded jumper, the knife and the backing music but there
was a twist we decided to go against the typical codes and
conventions of the genre by using a girl instead of a boy.
.
We as a group had to first analyse our treatment, to point out
the main themes that were in the sequence.

  • Crime
  • Depression
  • Revenge
  • Murder
  • Youth

                         Themes used:
Crime: we can guess that crime will happen in the sequence
because nikkie brings a out a knife and is crying
Depression: the facial expressions of the protagonists and the
body language
Throughout the opening sequence suggests that she is depressed
and lonely.

Murder: later on in the film the girl kills herself and another
person. This could relate to kidult hood when the girl kills
herself because she gets bullied at school also links to the theme
of depression.

Revenge: nikkie seeks revenge for the people who bully her at
school
Our film used the codes and conventions of an opening
sequence in our sequence ‘fragmental’ by:
Introducing the main character by using a wide range of
camera shots. We didn’t want to give away our main characters
identity as it would ruin the tension so we only showed parts of
her face, from behind, and the side... Tension is built up
similarly in the opening sequence of kill bill.
Indicating the themes
Including titles throughout the opening sequence like in the
American TV program Heroes, which often has its titles
appearing until way into their episodes.
By creating out own theme tune for the music: a gangster rap
type of soundtrack. We made the theme song by having it at a
up beat speed giving the audience the idea that something will
happen in the film and also gives the audience the idea of the
genre… if we didn’t add this type of music the idea genre of the
sequence will not be noticeable to the audience because you see
a girl getting ready for school it just wouldn’t make any sense.

Although our opening sequence is unique according to our
overall treatment and look of the film, there were other movies
and opening sequences that presented the youth crime genre as
well,( kidult hood: gun crime knife crime, depressed students
and broken homes, this relates to our opening sequence.) of
which we developed there ideas and conventions onto our
opening sequence. The protagonist is not entirely introduced in
the opening sequence, we only used Close ups, side shots and
point of view shots to establish nikkie (screen shot). These shots
were similar to the program misfits how? In some episodes
when the character is about to do something bad or is a villain
we are not shows the full profile of the character this builds up
tension in the audience leaving the audience questioned of
what is going to happen next?, or who is the character and why
is he or she doing that? This helps make the episode more
effective and interesting to watch (leaving the audience at the
edge of their seats.
