1. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT
HAVE YOU LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM THAT TO
THE FINAL PRODUCT?

2. PROPS
PRELIMINARY TASK
In our preliminary task we used a small Christmas
tree, tables, blankets, a teddy, and letter mats. I
think the small Christmas tree was unsuccessful to
use because the tree was very small compared to
the adult actor, which I found led people to believe
it was two children playing. This was also the same
effect with the letter mats. However I feel that
everything else was appropriate and helped our
preliminary task.
FILM OPENING
In this real film opening we used fake
blood,dogs,school uniform. I found all these props
were appropriate to use and did not confuse the
audience and made it seem very realistic. You can
see below the dog and dog lead that were used as
props.

3. LIGHTING
PRELIMINARY TASK
In our prelim talk the lighting I found was very bad.
It was too dark so therefore facial expressions
couldn’t be seen that much. It also was another
factor that mad the audience more confused
because it was very unclear.
FILM OPENING
In our real film opening the lighting was great. It
was not too dark nor too bright. You can clearly see
what is going on and you can see peoples facial
expressions.

4. SOUND
PRELIMINARY TASK
• In our preliminary task the only thing I thought
that went well in this category was the music we
included. It was creepy, but there wad hardly
any additional noises on top of this. I found that
there was too much screaming in this and made
it seem boring and more confusing to the
audience.
FILM OPENING
• My group included a lot of diegetic and no
diegetic sounds. This creates more feeling and
emphasis. I think the sounds we used were very
good this is also something that I thought went
well out of everything. We included creepy
music in this as well. The sound is something
that really helps to give feeling in our film
opening.

5. SETTING
PRELIMINARY TASK
Our prelim was supposed to be set in a house
scene, however we had no use of a house to film
in, so we had to make do with the schools drama
studio and stage. I found the stage was useful as it
was dark and mysterious and also there was many
props already there. This screenshot for our
preliminary task shows the setting of behind the
stage.
FILM OPENING
In the real film opening the scenes were set in the
street and in a park. These scenes were done
correctly and I think everything went to plan and it
made it look effective. So this was very successful.
We set our film opening in a park as we thought it
would go well with our storyline.

6. CAMERA
PRELIMINARY TASK
• In this task again I felt like the camera angles
and shots used were very good. They made the
piece interesting. I think this was the most
successful piece in the preliminary task.
FILM OPENING
• In our real film opening we used many different
camera shots and angles. I think we done this
effectively and it was very successful. Although
we could of stopped the camera from being
shaky at times. As you can see this is a high
camera shot.

7. EDITIING
PRELIMINARY TASK
• In this task we had to edit our clips, this included
adding music, and different effects. Doing this
made the prelim more effective for the
audience. Like below we used a distorted effect,
to make it creepier. For me editing was definitely
the hardest bit to do.
FILM OPENING
In our film opening we included a range of editing.
This was including coloured filters, cropping some
shots, slowing down some clips. Like as you can see
from below the colour has been changed into black
and white.

8. MISE-EN-SCENE
PRELIMINARY TASK
• We didn’t really plan our costumes and just
wore whatever. Like in our end part the evil
Santa is in school uniform, which confuses the
audience more. I think this was the worst bit
and that my group needed to plan it more.
FILM OPENING
• In our film opening we planned the costumes
very well. So like the school girl that had to be in
school uniform. The costumes made it clear to
the audience.

9. • I found the preliminary task was very difficult to do. Being our first one I found that we did not think the
storyline over. My group knew what we was doing but still failed to make it clearer to the audience what
was going on. In some of the feedback this is evident. I found it hard to make it a Christmas horror
when at the time of filming it was no where near Christmas so a small Christmas tree have to be used a
prop. This confused people a little more, the first scene wasn’t really homely. If these things were
sorted I think the preliminary task would have been successful and I would have been happier with it.
• In the preliminary task I was happy with the camera shots because we had a variety of them, for
example high shots, close ups. I think we pieced the editing really well together and that was successful.
I was not happy with the storyline, it confuses the audience. The story line had a great plot but it was
just unclear and had to be explained to the audience.
• In completing the coursework, overall I have learnt a number of techniques like editing. I learnt this
main technique from the Dancing animals task. I learnt how to edit the video clips, and use different
effects which have helped in both my film openings.
