Coimbra, Portugal is known for its university, one of the oldest in Europe. During Queima das Fitas in May, university students celebrate the end of the academic year with a parade through downtown decorated cars and drinking. The festivities begin with Serenata Monumental, a midnight concert of Fado singing in Sé Velha, symbolizing the end of studies for some and the start for others. Fado de Coimbra, the university's distinctive music, is performed with guitar and male voices and taught to students at the University of Coimbra's fado section.
