The American invasion of Quebec from August to December 1775 failed to capture the city from the British. Led initially by Philip Schuyler, command was transferred to Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold after Schuyler showed lack of initiative. Montgomery and Arnold split their combined force of 900 men into two groups to launch a pincer attack on Quebec City but Montgomery was killed in the initial assault. Although Arnold's group entered the city, they were soon surrounded and forced to surrender after the other attack failed. The Americans suffered over 400 casualties while the British lost only 6 killed and 19 wounded, ending the first American attempt to invade Canada during the Revolutionary War.
