Beyond JSON with FlatBuffers
FlatBuffers is an efficient cross-platform serialization library that avoids the overhead of JSON parsing. It allows data to be read lazily with almost zero cost and maintains backwards and forwards compatibility between old and new data. Managing the User Experience
This document discusses various techniques for managing user experience and preferences on macOS, including:
- Using the defaults command to modify system and application preferences through NSUserDefaults and CFPreferences.
- Managing proprietary application preferences which may store settings in custom locations rather than the system preferences. This requires examining application documentation and potentially using scripts.
- Configuration profiles, which define settings that can be installed via MDM or by double-clicking a profile file. Profiles set preferences that cannot easily be changed by users.
- Considering whether defaults, scripts, or profiles are best suited based on the environment, applications, and specific settings being managed.
Unix Shell Scripting
Here are some key things to practice with regular expressions using grep, sed and awk:
- Use grep to search files for patterns using basic regex metacharacters like ^, $, ., *, [, ], etc.
- Use sed for search and replace operations on files using regex to match patterns
- Use awk to parse files into fields based on delimiters like space, comma etc and perform operations on the fields stored in variables $1, $2 etc.
- Write simple awk scripts to print, filter and manipulate data from files. For example print certain fields, filter rows, perform calculations etc.
- Learn about more advanced regex features supported by tools like extended regex in grep, backreferences in sed etc
Unleash your inner console cowboy

It explain a proposal to use doctest for biopython documentation (and in general, in bioinformatics).

Apple’s popularity and their approach to selling hardware is revolutionizing how IT gets that hardware into the hands of its users. Every year’s new Macs and OS X bring new changes, which doesn’t leave much time for the repetitive setup tasks that are involved in getting machines ready for users (or our testing!). It’s easy to fall behind on OS support, but we have no choice but to support the latest.
The Mac sysadmin community is blessed with so many great open-source tools at its disposal for deploying and managing Macs. We'll look at approaches and tools for automating these to bring speed, consistency and sanity to our deployment processes. By being more systematic, we can be more agile, and reclaim time to work on more important problems.
This session will focus on OS X hardware and tools, but the approaches discussed apply equally to iOS devices.
Rust All Hands Winter 2011
Rust is a new systems programming language designed for safety, concurrency, and speed. It uses a borrow checker to ensure memory safety and avoid use-after-free bugs, and enables safe concurrency through message passing and ownership rules. The Rust team has been redesigning and implementing the language over the past year based on lessons learned from writing the compiler in Rust. Their goals are to have a memory-safe, concurrent language that achieves performance comparable to C++. They plan to use Rust for the parallel engine of the Servo browser project.
Privilege Escalation with Metasploit
This document summarizes techniques for privilege escalation using the Metasploit framework. Apple’s popularity and their approach to selling hardware is revolutionizing how IT gets that hardware into the hands of its users. Every year’s new Macs and OS X bring new changes, which doesn’t leave much time for the repetitive setup tasks that are involved in getting machines ready for users (or our testing!). It’s easy to fall behind on OS support, but we have no choice but to support the latest.
The Mac sysadmin community is blessed with so many great open-source tools at its disposal for deploying and managing Macs. We'll look at approaches and tools for automating these to bring speed, consistency and sanity to our deployment processes. By being more systematic, we can be more agile, and reclaim time to work on more important problems.
This session will focus on OS X hardware and tools, but the approaches discussed apply equally to iOS devices.
Rust All Hands Winter 2011
Rust is a new systems programming language designed for safety, concurrency, and speed. It uses a borrow checker to ensure memory safety and avoid use-after-free bugs, and enables safe concurrency through message passing and ownership rules. The Rust team has been redesigning and implementing the language over the past year based on lessons learned from writing the compiler in Rust. Their goals are to have a memory-safe, concurrent language that achieves performance comparable to C++. They plan to use Rust for the parallel engine of the Servo browser project.
Privilege Escalation with Metasploit
This document summarizes techniques for privilege escalation using the Metasploit framework. It begins by explaining why Metasploit is useful and why privilege escalation is important for gaining more access and control. It then provides examples of how to write Metasploit modules for local privilege escalation exploits, including generating payloads, including the necessary Metasploit mixins, and interacting with sessions post-exploitation. Specific local privilege escalation techniques demonstrated include exploiting vulnerable setuid binaries like Nmap, modifying Windows scheduled tasks, and relaying Windows authentication. Front End Development Automation with Grunt
Grunt is a JavaScript task runner that can automate front-end development tasks like linting, compiling Sass files to CSS, running tests and watching for file changes. It provides plugins for common tasks and allows developers to define custom workflows. The document discusses how Grunt can be used to integrate and run various tasks like linting, Sass compilation and watching files. It also explains how to define tasks, configure Grunt and run tasks from the command line. Custom tasks can be created and shared as plugins. As a Mac sysadmin, I've found some tasks I knew I was going to need to automate with scripts or die of boredom. And sometimes, what begins as a curious "Wouldn't it be cool if.." coding experiment evolves into something that solves a real problem.
Over time, I've built up a small collection of tools related to OS X deployment and automation that I've released on GitHub in the hopes that others might also find them useful. In this session I'll tour some of these utilities, explain how they came to be and demonstrate their use.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content.
