The Pythagorean theorem states that for any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The distance formula provides an algebraic expression to calculate the distance between two points by taking the difference of their x-coordinates squared plus the difference of their y-coordinates squared, and finding the square root of the total. Examples demonstrate using the distance formula to solve for the length of one side of a right triangle given the other two sides.
