Virtual Heritage: combining the past with modern technology - OpenArch Confer...
Sebastian Buks presented on using augmented reality and mobile technologies to enhance cultural heritage experiences. He discussed projects combining augmented reality with museums and archaeological sites to visualize historical artifacts and structures. Evaluations found the "wow factor" of augmented reality experiences but also usability issues. Buks suggested designing smartphone applications with points of interest connected to 3D models of historical structures to create immersive historical walking tours and games. He concluded augmented reality, when combined with storytelling and game-based learning, shows promise for cultural heritage but design of user-friendly interfaces remains a challenge.

Abstract: In the past decades, geographical maps have been used extensively as a means for spatial data visualization in the Humanities and beyond. Here, we consider data visualization to be the “representation and presentation of data to facilitate understanding” (Kirk, 2019). While maps have myriad advantages for visualization, such as presenting the spatial distribution of data to potentially generate new insights, they are also are inherently abstractions of reality. This abstraction can raise issues (see e.g. Allen & Queen, 2015; Pavlovskaya, 2016), particularly in the context of complex and multifaceted historical datasets involving uncertainty. This paper conceptually discusses these issues from a design perspective in the context of DH, specifically looking at cartographic design, interaction design and data structure. Subsequently, it briefly reveals how these angles were addressed in an enhanced 2D geographical maps viewer created within the Virtual Interiors project (2018-2022), which displays spatio-temporal historical datasets.

99% of historic monuments have been destroyed over time, leaving tourists frustrated by their inability to visualize how places once looked. PiligrimXXI is an augmented reality mobile application that acts as a "time machine", allowing users to see reconstructed versions of historic sites overlaid in the real world. It has already developed an app for Ludza Castle in Latvia, and seeks investment to install its technology in 30 new locations per year and gain 1.6 million paid downloads to generate $67 million in revenue by its third year.
Universcity: Towards a Holistic Approach to Educational Virtual City Design
In this paper, we seek to develop a holistic approach to educational virtual cities, introducing a concept of ‘Universcity’ as a framework for a wide range of social, cultural and educational activities, a city for students, researchers and other learners to live and work in. The metaphor of a city is widely used in the design of virtual worlds. However, a systematic approach to learning support in virtual cities is not fully developed yet. To fill the gap, we consider a city as a place for lifelong learning, with a broad spectrum of disciplines and areas of knowledge. We have investigated these aspects in the implementation of two projects where virtual reality was used for the contextualization of educational activities. Based on the experiences from these projects and related work, we propose an initial design of ‘Universcity’.

- To include the DDS in the collections of the heritage institutions of Amsterdam
- A pilot for net-archaeology: how to reconstruct, preserve and retrieve the virtual city DDS (DDS is born-digital) and make it accessible to the public, on a scientific and social level.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is.
