- Large American city Improving public safety by combining surveillance technology with breakthrough analytics BUSINESS CHALLENGE: Over the past few years, this city has deployed hundreds of fiber-connected video cameras as part of a broad surveillance initiative designed to better protect its citizens and respond to emergencies. In the bigger picture, the city envisioned its video deployment as only the first step toward achieving more advanced – and intelligent – surveillance capabilities. While the existing surveillance infrastructure has vastly improved the city’s ability to mitigate emergency situations, the city ultimately sought to evolve the system into a more predictive and analytical decision-making tool. SOLUTION: The city’s system evolution roadmap called for the development of an overlapping wireless grid that would connect its video cameras to its command center over a fiber backbone network. To deliver this, the city selected IBM on the strength of its ability to provide a comprehensive video networking solution in the near term and – just as importantly – provide the city with valuable technology guidance and thought leadership into the future. The aptly named IBM Smart Surveillance Solution (SSS) – a first-of-a-kind video analytics solution that combines advanced middleware and powerful algorithms – draws upon breakthroughs in such areas as motion detection, real-time alerts and face recognition, and backs it up with IBM’s robust infrastructure technology. SSS has the ability to unlock, analyze and leverage the more granular data embedded in video feeds, which, like puzzle pieces, can be used to create a richer picture of what’s going on in a given environment to enable a new level of surveillance effectiveness.
