- Before I get started, let me tell you a little about Jefferson County Public Health and what we do to improve health in the county. Public health is the prevention of disease, disability and premature death among the entire population. We look at the source or root causes of illness and injury in our communities, including the health impacts of personal health behaviors and environmental threats and we attempt to address them.
