2. THE NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER CENTER FOR PUBLIC POLICY
& SOCIAL SCIENCES AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
 What is the Internship Program? 
The Rockefeller Center can help students fund and prepare for a
leave-term internship experience in public policy research, public
policy analysis, issue evaluation, and/or activities that help shape
and determine public policy—whether at the local, state, national,
or international level. Students funded by the Rockefeller Center
intern with a wide variety of organizations and agencies. These
include governmental entities, non-profits, or think tanks
focusing on any of the sectors within public policy, including
economics, education, environment, health, international
relations, and/or law. Internships may take place within the U.S.
or anywhere across the world.
Students are encouraged to visit the Center for Professional
Development (formally Career Services) for advising and to
access DartBoard to learn about internship opportunities. More

 Learning Objectives 

Apply and test concepts learned in the classroom by
meaningfully contributing to a real-world work
environment;

Learn how to work and conduct oneself in a professional
setting while producing a quality work product;

Be exposed to the various roles of organizations and
institutions involved with policy making; and

Grow, both personally and professionally, by intentionally
reflecting on the internship and by utilizing the experience
to inform future academic and career decisions.

 Eligibility and Selection 
Dartmouth undergraduate students are eligible to apply for up
to $4,000 in funding to perform an internship in the field of
public policy during an upcoming leave term. Students of any
major may apply. Completion of the Rockefeller Center’s
Management and Leadership Development Program (MLDP) is
highly recommended for those applying.
Students must secure an internship on his or her own and apply
for funding through the Rockefeller Center separately. Eligible
internships must have a clear connection to public policy
and/or public affairs, be unpaid, and total 30-40 hours per week
for 8-10 weeks.
Internships with campaign organizations or for-profit
organizations are not eligible for funding. We do not fund postgraduation internships.
Fall 2013 deadline: July 24, 2013
Winter 2014 deadline: Oct 16, 2013
Spring 2014 deadline: Jan 29, 2014
Summer 2014 deadline: April 23, 2014

Applications that are received after the deadline are not able to
be considered. If you have not heard back from your target
host organization as the funding deadline approaches, submit an
application completed to the best of your ability along with a
written proposal.
Students are encouraged to meet with a Rockefeller Center staff
member prior to the application deadline for advising. To

 Expectations of an Intern 

Serve as an ambassador of the Rockefeller Center and
Dartmouth College;

Work for 8-10 weeks as an intern, spending 30-40 hours
per week at the host organization performing meaningful
duties related to public policy;

Attend all orientation and pre-departure sessions, along
with completing all program requirements including
guided reflection activities and other written assignments;

Attend a debriefing session upon returning to campus;

Give back to the Dartmouth community by providing
perspective gained from the experience to the classroom
setting, co-curricular programs, and through other
activities and venues on campus.
