4. Puberty
Puberty is a major life changing milestone. It is the period in which
adolescents reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproduction,
during which secondary sexual characteristics develop.
Knowing about puberty is important to ensure that pupils’ physical, psychological,
spiritual, emotional, and learning needs are met.
5. When do changes begin in boys?
– Boys mature a little slower than girls. For boys, puberty begins at age 11 on
average, although starting as early as age 9 or as late as age 14 is still
considered normal.
– Some boys mature faster than their peers, and some physical changes may be
more gradual than others.
6. Physical changes in boys
– Physical changes in boys usually start around age 13. These changes
include:
• Penis gets longer as testicles continue to grow bigger.
• Some breast tissue may start to form under the nipples (this happens to
some teenage boys during development and usually goes away within a
couple of years).
• As the voice begins to change, it may “crack,” going from high to lower
pitches.
• Muscles get larger.
• Height growth increases to 2 to 3.2 inches per year.
7. Physical changes cont’d
– Oily skin and hair, pimples
– Body sweats more
– Hair grows on the face, under armpits, around the genitals
– May get more hair on arms, legs and chest
– Boys begin to have wet dreams (ejaculation at night).
8. Erection and Ejaculation
– If semen is going to come the penis is likely to be erect
– A penis gets erect when blood rushes into it.
– Muscles push the semen into the urethra and out the penis.
This is called ejaculation
– If a boy wakes up and finds a wet sticky spot on his pyjamas,
semen came out when he was sleeping, this is called nocturnal
emissions, or a “wet dream”.
– Some boys have wet dreams and some don’t.
9. Spermatogenesis
– Hormones makes the testicles grow and they start making more testosterone and
produces sperm.
– After puberty you make 200,000 – 400,000 sperm cells a day for the rest of your
life.

Looking for an identity
Feeling uncertain
Conflicting thoughts
Mood swings
Feeling conscious about self
Sexual awakening
11. Psychological changes in boys
– Body image and self-esteem
– Need for independence
– Peer pressure
– Sexual feeling
12. Spiritual changes in boys
– Your thoughts and outlook on life will start changing drastically
during puberty.
– You might start to question the actions and feelings of your family,
your friends and yourself.
– The things that are important to you may change as well.
13. Daily checklist for a changing body
– Shower daily
– Use deodorant or anti-perspirant on the underarms.
– Wash face daily to help prevent acne
– Brush teeth twice per day
