An Analysis Of PoBoy Blues By Langston Hughes
The poem Po Boy Blues was composed by Langston Hughes during 1926, his early writing era.
His poetry was inspired by his family s history, a history full of abandonment, betrayal, and
violence. His father abandoned him seeking to find a life less confrontational to a black man,
leaving Langston Hughes to face being raised by his grandmother in the very same hostile
environment his father sought to escape. His motherbetrayed him as she never embraced him with a
mother s love not only once leaving him as a young child, but twice when he came to live with her
after his grandmother died. His grandmother immersed Langston in his familys dark history,
sometimes laying the bullet ridden shawl on him from where his grandfather died... Show more

Just repeating these words causes the reader to feel the weariness and heavy burden pressing upon
the speaker. Often when the lines are repeated the image is cemented in the readers mind as words
like Sunshine seemed like gold

lines Since I come up North de / Whole damn world s turned cold (5 6), referring to his
expectations of success not coming true. Inferring the North was a wonderful place to live until he
arrived. (frag..must fix) The poem, Po Boy Blues uses rhyme in the fourth and sixth lines of each
stanza.
In the first stanza(,) rhyme is used to point out the emotional state of the speakers outlook,
Sunshine seemed like gold, (line 4) and Whole damn world s turned cold, (line 5). The poet used
this method again in stanza 3 to compare his experience in love; A gal I thought was kind, (line
16) and An almost lose ma mind. (line 17). Finally he shows us his complete despair in stanza 4;
Early, early in de morn (line 22) and I wish I d never been born (line
24). This rhyme helps to flow the emotion from the speaker to the reader. The reader senses the
speaker s complete lack of hope(,) he has given up on life. Hughes s use of alliteration throughout
his poem, Sunshine seemed like gold. / Since I come up North de /

The United States Post Civil War
The United States post Civil War era from 1875 to 1900 experienced massive economic and
industrial growth, especially in the North. The rise of new machines, industries (railroad, oil, steel),
and buildings contributed to a major upsurge in the prosperity of the American nation. In 1860, no
American city had a population over one million; by 1890, three cities had passed the million mark.
New York City became the second largest city in the world after London in 1900. The substantial
growth of the U.S economically can be contributed to a group of wealthy capitalists that ran
businesses/industries and stimulated economic growth. However, historians have argued over
whether these capitalists were robber barons that were corrupt and took advantage of the American
people or captains of industry that helped the U.S grow at unparalleled speeds. Wealthy capitalists
such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were indeed captains of industry who enlarged
American industry and businesses, used their wealth to better their communities, and elevated the
United States to new heights as one of the leading industrial powers of the entire world. The major
wealthy capitalists of the time Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt all played a tremendous role in developing American industry and ultimately
the economy as a whole. Through their business ventures, they vastly increased the industrial
output of America. For example,

Long Beach Cemetery Essay
1923, amid all the fighting over oil and a place for a mausoleum, a new model cemetery was
established with an entrance off Cherry Avenue at 1500 E. San Antonio Drive. It really wasn t a
new cemetery, since it incorporated the earlier Palm Cemetery, donated by Jotham Bixby. Long
Beach, rich with oil money, was the largest city in California without a mausoleum. Now, in order
to cool down tempers, building of the mausoleum continued. A new design, drawn up by Cecil E.

The African American males access to higher learning is detrimental to the United States
economy. The social conditions that plague African American males in their quest for college
degrees are very obvious. For more than 40 years, the African American male has been missing in
action from higher learning institutions by a margin of 50:1. In this paper, I will explore the
problems and the critical actions needed for correction. The 20% increase in the number of degrees

Essay on Explaining Political Philosophy
Explaining Political Philosophy
Political philosophy, or political theory, as it is also known, is about human condition, or, what
humans are like. There are roughly four main kinds of political philosophy around today
Libertarianism, Socialism, Liberalism and Communitarianism. Political theory is an attempt to
understand people, what we are like as individuals, what society and the state are like, and how we
as humans, the state and society all interact with one and other.
A social contract theory is the method of justifying political principles or arrangements by appeal to
the agreement that would be made among suitably situated rational, free, and equal persons. For

To run the state a very high level of technical knowledge would be required, as only the brightest
people should be in charge of it and run it.
Hobbes, a seventeenth century English philosopher, is generally regarded as the first modern
political philosopher; he is famous for his early and elaborate development of what has come to
be known as social contract theory . He is infamous for having used the social contract method to
arrive at the astonishing conclusion that we ought to submit to the authority of an absolute,
undivided and unlimited, sovereign power. He conceived of politics as science. In his theory of
ballistics (guns and missiles) objects moved at random, and were likely to collide with one and
other. Hobbes viewed society in much the same way; we all as individuals are more or less
equal, we seek pleasure and avoid pain. This will undoubtedly lead to competition between
individuals. Because of this Hobbes characterizes the state of nature as a state of war, where the
life of the individual according to him would be solitary, poore, nasty, brutish and short . This
Hobbesian state of nature is so horrible that individuals would want to avoid it at all costs. We
therefore need a state that has laws that will protect us from each other; Hobbes calls this the
absolutist state . To avoid the horrible prospect

`` Delusion Of Grandeur `` By Terry Ann Thaxton
Humans are social creatures. We identify ourselves through our community, loved ones, and those
who genuinely appreciate our presence. Our identity defines our personality traits, highlight social
roles. Those with disabilities are often confused about their identity because they are misunderstood
and stigmatized. Through the use of literature, one can empathize better with other people
especially those who are misunderstood by society. Disabled people are more likely to be
neglected and subjected to prejudice or discrimination. In Delusionof Grandeur , Terry Ann Thaxton,
talks about the struggle between Adam and his mother because of his disability. Adam struggles to
cope with his environment and finds himself isolated and misunderstood. Families ultimately suffer
but through their experience, they can learn some amazing lessons.
Adam in Delusion of Grandeur is terribly misunderstood. His mother tries everything in her
power to fix him. Taking care of someone like Adam can be strenuous and tiring. The day to day
strain of providing assistance can lead to exhaustion and fatigue. This can create a whole set of
issues that create emotional stress, guilt, anxiety, anger , and uncertainty about the future. At the
same time, caretaking responsibilities may lead to changed or abandoned career plans. Adam s
mother went as far as signing up for school so that she can monitor her son s behavior. Thaxton
writes, He agreed to take an art class, but only if I took it with him.

This is a type of a mass produced food that is prepared and served very quickly. The food is less
nutritional compared to other foods and dishes. This refers to food sold in a restaurant or a store
with preheated ingredients and served to the customer in a packaged form for take away.
The history of fast food
The concept of ready cooked food for sale is closely connected with urban development. Homes
in cities always lacked proper food. Additionally, procuring cooking fuel could cost as much as
purchased produce. In Ancient Rome, cities had street stands a large counter with a receptacle in

How Did Pythagoras Influence The Ancient World
Pythagoras was from c. 580 B.C. c. 500 B.C., known as Pythagoras of Samos. He was a famous
Greek philosopher, religious leader, and mathematician best known for his work on geometry is
the Pythagorean theorem, a^2+b^2=c^2. He and his followers created a secret society which was
known as the Pythagoreans. They explored, discovered, and proved a lot of the principles, ideas,
and concepts of mathematics. Pythagoraswas an excellent man who made many important
discoveries in different areas of mathematics and science. Those discoveries influenced the ancient
world as well as today. And, people continue to apply them today.

It states that for any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse length c is equal to the sum of the
squares on the two shorter leg lengths a and b which is written as a^2+b^2=c^2 (Pickover, 2009, p.
40). An ancient Chinese text on mathematics, the Chou Pei also gives an evidence that the Chinese
knew about the Pythagorean theorem many years before Pythagoras or one of his followers
(Joseph, 2000, p. 180). The Pythagorean discovered and first proved it, so that the theorem is
named after Pythagoras.
Pythagoras Proof:
Let a and b be the legs, and c be the hypotenuse of the given right triangle. Each big square below

The right big square is separated into five pieces. They are the square with the hypotenuse, c as its
side and four right triangles congruent to the given triangle. Then we write out the area for each
big square. Since they have congruent sides, they areas will be congruent (Head, 1997, p.

Exile In Beowulf
The halls regaled in Old English Literature were safe havens for lords, warriors and clansmen
alike, the halls had a complex association with the self in these times. Exile was equivalent to
certain death to the Anglo Saxons; they were without protection from their lord or their clan and
were wandering without a sense of belonging.
In The Wandererthe theme of exile as a type of hell is apparent from the poet s narration of the
wanderer s internal monologue. He laments how he is forced to travel the exile s path (Crossley
Holland, line 5, pp.50) after his lords death and how he is perpetually alone without any kinsmen
by his side. He reflects upon the joy of his old hall asking, where has the horse gone? Where the

To paraphrase Thomas Shippey in Bloom s Guides: Beowulf , mead halls are a place of
happiness and full of light; whereas monsters are creatures that have to be covered by darkness
(Shippey). Those who seek safety within the walls of the hall shall be protected for the monsters
that dwell beyond. Heaven is a place often portrayed as being bathed in light much like the halls
in Old English literature, while exile is more closely aligned with the Christian idea of hell, a
dark place void of protection and companionship. Continuing with Beowulf, characters can also
be used as modes to convey this message. The contrast between Beowulf and Grendel is almost
as opposite as the halls and exile or Heaven and Hell. Beowulf is celebrated and a great protector
of those who follow behind him, bathed in the light of the halls he spends time in. While
Grendel is exiled with only his mother for companionship and hides in the cloak of darkness,
always stalking unable to withstand the light of the halls. Stanley Baldwin touches on this idea
in his companion book, CliffsNotes; Beowulf , he describes Heorot as it is a place of light,
warmth, and joy, contrasting with Grendel s morbid swamp as well as the dark and cold of
winters in Scandinavia (Baldwin, pp.76). The idea of the hall as a sort of heaven like structure
is explored in Bede s Ecclesiastical History of the English People he talks of a sparrow flying
through a hall in a winter s storm, ...While inside, he is safe from the winter storms; but after a
few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintery world from which he came
(Bede et al., pp.130 131). Elaborating on Bede s imagery while enclosed in the hall you are
ensured of good cheer and protection and in contrast outside you are open to the world s elements

A Few South Africans By Sue Williamson Essay
A Few South Africans is a series of works by Sue Williamson that truly interested me. This
prominent South African English artist, known for her politically and societally questioning
artworks, investigates the natural strength of black South African women, and how they were
oppressed during this period. In this essay, I will attempt to understand the situation of South Africa
s past and in turn its present with the help of her references and her work. The main theme of
Williamson s piece is female activism and freedom of expression during a time of conflict in their
country. It attempts to show how all women were affected by apartheid. The motives for wanting a
fairer society based on equal distribution of wealth and power between different races shouldn t be
a tricky idea to understand. To explain is simple. To change is much harder.
Nevertheless, Williamson attempts to answer these questions. In some ways we can empathise,
because our society has been through a similar struggle for the recognition of women in society,
namely the Suffragette Movement. This struggle for the vote took 110 years and true parity is
ongoing. The women in Williamson s work were all important in developing the limited freedom
of black South Africans today. Compared to their white brothers and sisters, Black South Africans
still only own 30% of all land in South Africa. Sue Williamson highlights the work of trailblazers
like Winnie Mandela (left). Also featured is Albertina Sisulu, a

A Natural Start Of Life
A natural start to life:
Aristotle, a famous philosopher, believed in the notion of spontaneous generation, the idea that life
could arise from inanimate objects. Louis Pasteur famously dispelled this theory, when he showed
that organisms will only arise if the parental species is initially present in a closed system.
However, this conclusion relates to the generation of new organisms from parental ones, not the
origin of life itself. The first organism had no parental species, therefore the organism had to have
originated from non living matter. Stanley L. Miller kick started the study of the origin of life with
his famous 1953 prebiotic soup experiment in which he took a mixture of reduced gases believed to
represent the atmospheric conditions on primordial Earth and reacted them together in a spark
discharge apparatus. The results were surprising, with a mixture of biochemically relevant organic
molecules spontaneously being formed, including amino acids an essential building block of life.
Miller s results showed that organic molecules could be generated from inorganic ones, a finding
that inspired the modern era of understanding the origin of life and challenged common perceptions.
Now, in the dawn of the 20th century, there are two main theories that dominate the field, the
metabolism first theory and the RNA world theory. The term RNA world was coined by in 1986 by,
Walter Gilbert; however the idea of independent RNA life can be traced to Carl

Andreas Vesalius Research Paper
Andreas Vesalius was a Renaissance Physician who revolutionized the way we look at anatomy.
He transformed the study of biology and the practice of medicine by reevaluating the human
body. Past physicians had given believable but incorrect knowledge about the human anatomy.
His work was seen as being against the church which proposed a big challenge for Vesalius due
to the fact that at this time the church had a lot of power. He was called a Renaissance Physician
because he was a physician during the time of the rebirth or the enlighten age which was a period
in time in which society and scholars thought that we should begin to fix the way we live. It was a
time of advancement in every field including art, agriculture, scienceand many more. This led to
many people questioning things that other saw as facts, and led to a time of testing and
hypothesizing. This is the age in which the scientific method created and used. Scholars began to

anatomical demonstrations. He taught the same material he was taught which was based on the
research of Galen, who was a physician whose study of the anatomy was almost all of the
understanding of the anatomy we had at the time. Galen based most of his ideas of the human
anatomy on that of the anatomy of animals which he had dissected. He believed that they were
relatively the same, which could not be more incorrect. Vesalius discovered one mistake while

Afghanistan Drug Trafficking
In western societies, families are living comfortable lifestyles, non threatening jobs, and are
blessed to witness their children growing up. However, in Afghanistan, citizens are relying on
opium poppy plants from drug dealers as their source of survival, with the risk of endangering their

arise. In the PBS documentary Opium Brides, families are left with the fate of sacrificing their
own children, in order to survive. Farmers in Afghanistan are reliant on opium plants to provide
stability in their homes, however the government is against opium. Most of the countries economy
is resulted from the production of opium; about 90% of families in Afghanistan produce opium .

reinforced the need for a structured teacher support. There was the consensus that the beginning

They all found out their rights, responsibilities, expected tasks, the history of the organization and
many more by hearsays or stories of their fellow employees which sometimes brought them
confusion, anxiety stress, and worst burn out. The situation might have caused teachers to think of
quitting their jobs and find other careers somewhere else. The major thrust of this study was to

Nanacha s Digger
There is a fierce competition going on every night in the woods, a secret ritualistic meeting of
disenfranchised businessmen. Each armed with a shovel they challenge is to dig for as long as
you can. The nightly competition attracts a nameless and silent protagonist, an office worker
who spends his days fantasizing about the act of digging. He must face some fierce competition
in order to make it to the top and beat the man who silently watches over the event. Digger is an
example that in the world of the absurd anything can become a competition. This short film
which features no dialogue and a lot of digging is more fun in execution than concept. The late
night rituals the men perform in the short makes it feel as if this is just an event that has been and
always will be, steeped in a deep tradition with synchronized dances and an unspoken language
that you have to dig to prove your worth. Although it is hard to imagine this drawn out into feature
length as a short film it is very successful at creating this odd, funny yet endearing culture of a

we started buying out our competition. This is one of the main ways we created a monopoly. We

competing against us, and proposed a secret deal with us to be acquired into our company.
Q: Why did you use horizontal integration?
A: Horizontal integration was one of the main ways that I succeeded. One of the ways that I used
horizontal integration was to buy railroads to ship my oil to where it needed to go for more money
and profit. I also bought out my opponents for more money and less competition. This is how I

Why Was World War 1 A Turning Point In History
World war one occurred during 1914 to 1918 and was a major turning point in history. Thirty two
countries were involved in world war one. After the war ended many soldiers were given the title
of being a war hero for their courageous actions during the war. However all the mothers, wives and
children that were left in Australiawere left with the major responsibility of taking on paid
employment and household work and they deserve equal recognition. Whilst young Australian men
were fighting in the war, the Australian economy, workforce and female roles were changing but
the Australian spirit and reputation was only growing through the support given to sliders from
their home front.

The Australian society worked in way that prevented women from working as they were
expected to stay home look after their children and do all the domestic work. Women that where
not married before the war where unlikely to find a partner as sixty thousand men were killed and
one hundred and fifty thousand men where injured (Skwirk online education, 2016). During this
time women were expected to marry young and have children. Consequently this meant that when
the war started thousands of men were forced to abandon their jobs and fight for Australia so
there were many vacancies that need to be filled and there were also many women that were
looking after their children and had no income. The government started to employing women
through campaigns and recruiting drives (Australian Government, 2015). Women worked in areas
that where originally considered jobs for men, some of these occupations include: railway guards,
ticket collectors and some led horses or other animals on farms. Women were working the same

The Changing World Of Gymnastics
Gymnastics has drastically changed since the time it began in ancient Greece. Looking back at it,
nearly nothing is the same. It has gradually been modified into the sport that it is today. Whether it
s small changes like a switching the compulsory music to a different piece of music, or big changes
like switching the number people who will go to the Olympics that year, there is constantly
something different going on in the world of gymnastics. Gymnastics is also always getting harder
than it was the previous year. While this makes it much more competitive and entertaining, it also
becomes much more dangerous. So this constantly changing sport has both its advantages and its

Essay On Zero Emissions
Zero Emissions Global warming is a significant issue and the CO2 levels are up in astronomical
proportions; therefore, it does not matter what caused it at this point (Volti, 2014). Scientists can
argue weather man has had a significant influence on the temperature rise all they want; however, it
is a well understood fact that humankind has contributed to the now high levels of CO2 in the air
and humankind cannot continue to pollute the air in such high volume without regard for future
generations. Considering the incredible leap in technology the combustion engine was and the host
of benefits mankind enjoys from it is here to stay, the next leap in technology should revolutionize it
again to perform better and safer without emitting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With over 100 thousand trucks and other vehicles in service around the globe, it has more emission
output than many average sized cities (UPS, 2017). A complete reduction in emissions would be
equivalent to an entire city that stopped using combustion engines. The positive social impact
would make UPS the benchmark of social economic environmental consciousness that every
transportation provider would attempt to emulate. Furthermore, the entire planet would benefit
from such an ecofriendly competition, which will lead to many other health benefits and provide
lasting sustainability of our dwindling fossil fuel resources.
Remarkably, UPS has made considerable strides to improve the fuel efficiency of its trucks with
proprietary algorithms such as its package flow technology, which minimize the distance traveled to
deliver goods continues (Watson, 2017). Utilizing innovation theory to consider its environmental
sustainability, UPS also contributes to improving its bottom line. According to Ribeiro and Szabo
Cherobim (2017) There is no doubt that the environment affects dynamic and strategy of
organizations and understanding the external environment is a fundamental condition for the
organizational survival (p. 31). As UPS replaces existing trucks with fuel efficient models, it not
only caters to its ecofriendly reputation, it saves substantial revenue in fuel costs; therefore, it is

Euripides As A Tragic Tragedy
The Big Three of Greek tragedy has always been Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. As a late
comer to the stage of tragedy in comparison to the others, Euripides formed his reputation by
building off the works of others. For instance, in Hekabe, Euripides incorporated already known
characters and concepts from The Orestia written by Aeschylus. Despite the fact that Euripides
appears to build off the work of others, Aristotle honors him with the title of the most tragic
playwright. Euripides stood out by using a novel structure for tragedy. In a typical tragedy, the
protagonist is the central characterin the play and an antagonist brings about the suffering and
downfall of the protagonist, which the audience is supposed to pity. Euripides breaks from this
archaic model by producing tragedies without a clear antagonist. Without this pivotal character
role, the play is able to take on a more tragic persona. Aristotle expresses his thoughts about
tragedy in his book Poetics. In the chapter titled The Best Kinds of Tragic Plot, Aristotle dives
into how a plot should be structured (page 20, Poetics). Aristotle believes a simplistic plot
structure using common households is best (page 20, Poetics). He uses Euripides as an example
of what to do, stating that those who criticize his work for using already established characters
are making a mistake. Euripides utilizes the audience s background knowledge of his characters
to his advantage. He is able to embellish his plays by alluding to references already known to the
audience to further the plot. For example, in Hekabe, during the sacrifice of Polyxena there were
parallels to the sacrifice of Agamemnon s daughter Iphigenia. This detail in the play builds
Agamemnon s character without going off on a long anecdote about his past. Aristotle believed
that despite Euripides s incorporation of already established characters, it was the structure of his
plots which allows him to be regarded as the most tragic of poets. (page 22, Poetics). As
previously stated, Euripides distinguishes himself from other playwrights by embracing a unique
style of having unclear antagonistic roles. His play Hekabe is a perfect example because the
antagonistic role is obscure. The

The Aviation Fever After The World War I
James Dutch Kindelberger, a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, played a pivotal
role in American aviation. Kindelberger was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1895, 20 years
before the first heavier than air flight by the Wright brothers. After attending only one year of
high school, Dutch dropped out to become a steel mill apprentice. After experiencing the brutal
hard work of the steel mill, he decided to go back to school learn drafting at Carnegie Institute of
Technology, which would prove to be a useful skill in his future in avionics. Kindelberger first

largest impacts came during the inter war years and World War II. While working as a mid tier

Martin Bombers which were a series of superior bombers used towards the end of World War I.
The Martin Bombers had new some never before seen features such as closed cockpits, rotating

standards for bombers at the time thus leading to other bomber designs being obsolete. Then, with

A Project Manager For The Success Of Acer Inc.
I Worked with Nokia Solutions Networks as a Project Manager for many years. Acer is one of the
largest telecommunication companies in the world. Over the years, the company has emerged
from a small local business to become successfully global. Its visionary founder took into account
its difficult path as the best way in which the company could prosper towards the acquisition of the
global market. As Barrow (2011) contends, one of the factors that has promoted the success of Acer
Inc. is the proper financial systems and budgetemployed in the managementof its finances. For
example, in 1976, it was founded with a capital of US$25ooo, but has grown steadily to become a
multibillionaire company, together with its other close competitors (Barrow, 2011).
Running a company often requires carefully planning and review of finances. Various studies reveal
that most companies use other forms of accounting mainly for measuring, identifying, analyzing,

budget planning is still important for the development and success of Acer Company. In this way,
accounting tools may include financial statements, forecasts, and other may be employed. Proper

Is Scrooge A Selfish Person
Even though Scrooge was selfish at the beginning he still should deserve a second chance. In the
Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a protagonist named Scrooge, was a selfish and mean
person but then he changes throughout the story. I describe him as selfish, unfriendly, and a
kind person. The reason why I described him as a selfish person is because he didn t give money
to the poors and thought they were scumbags. The second reason why I called Scrooge a
unfriendly person is because he didn t want to go to his nephew s dinner and he doesn t say kind
things to people. The last reason why I think Scrooge is a kind person is because at the end he gave
money to the poors and felt sorry for Tiny Tim. Scrooge does change from being selfish and
unfriendly person to a kind person in the end.
First, Scrooge is a selfish person and he only cares about himself. On page 256 Scrooge says, I wish
to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish, sir, that is my answer. I don t make merry myself at
Christmas, and I can t afford to make idle people merry. This shows how Scrooge doesn t want to
help the poors which means he only cares about himself. On page 264 Belle says, We have never
lied to one another. May you be happy in the life you have chosen. This describes how he didn t
care about Belle or his girlfriend and only cared about his money. On page 268 Scrooge says, You

Cons * Corporations often use sinking funds to purchase back bonds, thus shorting the length of
interest payments for the bondholder/investor, which losses potential money. * Companies also
have the ability to purchase back bonds at a discount or par value, which is less than market value.
So in essence, companies wait for interest rates go down, which in effect increases the value of the
bond. * Creates a lot of ambiguity amongst investors. It becomes of game of beat the Interest rate

Questions On Pascal s Wager
I am arguing that Pascal s Wager is significantly stronger of a rationale when more social factors
are taken into consideration. In his time, Blaise Pascal formed the foundation of the Pascal s Wager
we know of today, posthumously in the form of Infinirien . Though this is more easily defensible
then Pascal Wager, the modified version has garnered enough popularity and has enough similar
that it is the target of most criticisms. Pascal came up with a theory of understanding the
consequences of not believing in Godversus those that came with believing in him. From his
calculations he determined that since believing in God had the same result as not believing
when God didn t exist. When God did exist however, the consequences of not believing were dire
and the reward for believing was infinite. Pascal tried to explain that believing in God was the
rational decision when such infinite rewards of heaven and such punishment of hell are
possibilities. Social implications are crucial to understanding how Pascal s Wager might apply
today and in countries of all different cultures. I will discuss three of the most common objections
toward Pascal s Wager and illustrate how considering just a few social factors make the decision to
believe in God more rational then not. Then, I will explain how though there s not enough evidence
toward believing unswervingly, there is still enough positive implications that can warrant
accepting your socially acceptable faith. Pascal s Wager has

Hidden Figures Film Analysis Hidden Figures is a 2016 film that recounts the story of three
incredible black women in NASA history: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.
The film largely sheds light on the experiences of these three women working as computers for

The acting of the three main characters was genuine, honest, and truly exemplary. What I also
found to be quite interesting and perhaps a weakness of the film, was the sense of performative
racism that four of the main white characters utilize and how the makers of the film appeal to
such a phenomenon through symbolisms as well. In the movie, there seems to be two main
kinds of racism the characters exhibit, one of them being blatant racism and another being subtle
racism through microaggressions. For example, Katherine experiences blatantly racist and
misogynistic behavior from her coworkers, especially from Paul Stafford, the lead engineer
(making groupthink much easier) and Ruth, the only other woman working in the office. On the
other hand, Al Harrison and John Glenn appeal to the subtler sides of racism and performative
white pity, Glenn going out of his way to shake the hands of the computers as the film attempted
to paint a positive, not all whites picture of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance, a kind of racism
that almost all of the white people in the film come to, by its end. Examples of this can be seen
in scenes like the one in which Al Harrison smashes down the coloreds and whites restroom signs
as if implying that doing so will abolish all racial inequalities with a couple of blows of blunt force.
One could infer it seems, that paired with the groundbreaking stories of these three women, white

Crescendos In The Firebird Suite
In both pieces of music, The Firebird Suite, by Igor Stravinsky (1882 1971) and C Jam Blues, by

Dynamics is defined as degrees of loudness or softness in music, and timbre is defined as quality

Blues uses improvisation, which is musiccreated at the same time it is performed. Each piece has

The Treatment Of The Mentality Of Hamlet And Prince Hamlet
Mental health disorders manifest through every part of the body altering the way a person is able
to function. The body reacts the way that the mind tells it to, and when the mind is corrupt
complications arise within the individuals causing potentially life altering diseases and impulsive

He also has borderline personality disorder due to the ghost of his father visiting leaving stress,
and anxiety towards the task of killing his uncle for revenge, being the reason it took Hamlet so

The Theme Of Money In My Mortal Enemy By Willa Cather
There are many themes and symbols shown throughout My Mortal Enemy by Willa Cather, from
love to marriages, and choices. The motif I want to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used
throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle,
and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra s mortal enemy.
Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor
boy and made his fortune employing contract labor in the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel
describes their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten acre park and was
the finest property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra
would throw balls and garden parties, where she would have the band play their music (10).
Myra s aunt said that Myra had everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway
piano , and how her uncle took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters
there (10 11).
At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love
with a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr. Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort
with Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. Oswald had
left Parthia and went to college at Harvard; he then moved to New York and after two years he
was in the position to get married (12). Then he wrote to John Driscoll for Myra s hand in

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Barack Obama s Pregural Speech

that is professional for his audience. Obama writes this speech to let people know that we will
not take for granted the acts people did for us to live together equally. During President Obama s
inaugural speech, he remarked, On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances

Myths Of The Knife
The knife is one of the oldest tools used by humanity so it should come as no surprise that there

myths. Any buyer looking to purchase knives should know why these myths are false so that you

When you get injured by a knife, it means you got cut buy it in some form or another. Thinking like
this would mean that knife that does not cut well is less likely to injure the user. The problem with
this thinking is that dull knives require more force to actually complete the cutting action, which in
turn makes the user more likely to lose control and accidentally injure themselves because the knife
went somewhere it should not have gone.
Myth 3: Harder Blades Stay Sharp Longer
While hardness definitely is a factor in how sharp an edge a blade can hold, there is thing as a
blade being too hard. The problem is that blades that are only hard also are brittle and hence
prone to breaking. Brittle blades can easily chip, losing their original edge and so become jagged
and dull. If your blade will last long then it needs to be resilient. Hardness alone is not enough.
Myth 4: Giving a Knife as a Gift Severs Relationships
This is one of the oldest and dumbest knife myths that are still around. The idea behind this

Compare and Contrast Essay Rough Draft The Light in the Forest, by Conrad Richter, and
Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes, are two incredibly distinct novels, each with their own
similarities and differences when compared to one another. True Son, the protagonist in Light in
the Forest, is a fifteen year old boy raised by a tribe of Delaware Indians for the past eleven years
of his life. Though he is biologically American, he wholeheartedly considers himself a full blooded
Indian. This not only creates turmoil when he is forcibly moved to his biological white family but
causes True Son confusion when he is forced to choose between not only his two families but his
two other identities as well. On the other hand, Johnny Tremain, the protagonist in the novel Johnny
Tremain, faces a completely different situation for he is a fourteen year old boy living in colonial
Boston. He is at first entirely self centered and arrogant due to his prodigious gifts as a silversmith
apprentice. However, when an unfortunate injury results in him having a crippled hand, this
destroys any chance of him being an adequate silversmith. He faces humiliation but through many
struggles and difficulties transforms into a patriotic man. Through analyzing the two novels, there
were many similarities and differences found. Similarities include the difficult journey they both
encounter as well as their similar behavior. On the contrary, both individuals differ through their
race and how they were brought up. Both True Son and Johnny Tremain desire to stay in a
comfortable setting. They greatly enjoy their life and make no wish to change it. And yet, both
characters were forced to face hardships which ultimately changes both their situation as well as
their perspectives in life. For instance, Johnny Tremain had a comfortable position in life. He was
widely considered the most talented young silversmith in Boston. Though he was egotistic, he
was destined for a bright future. Regrettably, when molten silver disfigured his hand he lost his
chance at ever becoming a silversmith and can no longer find skilled work. Filled with self pity
and despair, he almost turns to a life of crime. Only his friendships and new job with a Whig
newspaper company

Toyota has invested in several joint ventures. These joint ventures may be deemed as variable
interest entities, however, neither the aggregate size of these JVs nor Toyota s involvements in
these entities are expected to be material to Toyota s consolidated financial statements. In
February 2003, EITF reached a consensus on Issue of Accounting for the Transfer to the Japanese
Government of the Substitutional Portion of Employee Pension Fund Liabilities. Toyota has
already begun the separation process. However, no effect of this transaction has been recognized
in the consolidated financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2003 as the completion of
the transfer of the benefit obligation and related plan assets to the Japanese government is
expected in the year ending March 31, 2004. Subseqent events, errors and irregularities, illegal
acts or related party transactions TMC did not get involved into any related party transactions.
TMC enters only in business interactions with its business partners, contract suppliers and
affiliated companies. There were no errors or irregularities reported for the TMC for the year
ended March 31, 2003. There were some factors that could influence the future operations of the
company. TMC was involved in various pending and settled court proceedings that could have an
impact in the future. I will describe only the most important ones: 1.In February 2003 Toyota

How Did The Peasants Revolt Occur In 1381
Peasants Revolt The Peasants Revolt occurred in 1381. It was one of the most important
historical events in all of the Medieval era. This short period was when the peasants stood up for
themselves, trying to receive equality and more rights from the rest of society. The Peasant
Revolt, is also known as the Wat Tyler Revolt. Walter Tyler was more regularly known as Wat
Tyler and the leader of the English Peasants Revolt. Being only 14 years old at the time King
Richard II was a young King but as the death of his father 5 years earlier from illness and
grandfather one year later, King Richard was left to reign the throne. In the last four years two new
taxes had already been introduced. This had already upset peasants, until Richard II announced that
there was to be a third new tax. The peasants had had enough. There had been a long running war...

As a result of the Bubonic Plaque, many manors were left to be short of workers but still the
same amount of work was needed. The peasants took advantage of this and demanded higher
wages, because they knew that a lord would be desperate to grow and harvest his crops. So the
lords started to encourage peasants to come and work on his manor and leave there home
villages. So they did. But when the peasants wanted to return, Feudal Law stated that they could
not leave their village unless they had been grated permission from their lords. He would then
refuse to give permission and the peasants would have to stay and continue working on that
manor. On each manor a lord would have many peasants and serfs tendon his land. A serf was a
person that was bound to an area of land. If the lord sold the land then the serf would then work
for the new owner. Where as a peasant was a person with a low social ranking, who was restricted

The Biological View on Gender
Dr. Strode English 101:KK 17 September 2010 The Biological and Cultural View on Gender
Society has drilled an image into our minds as people of how the role of each gender should be
played out. There are two recognized types of genders, a male and a female. Most people come
to think that gender is just male or female. Yet it has become more complex then that. Today it is
not just that if you have male parts, you are a man, the opposite goes for women. According to the
authors Aaron Devor and Deborah Blum. Gender is much more complex then just male and
female, it is more socially composed. We are taught to be male and female trough things like media,
our parents, and role model figures. These... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By Blum using words like congenital adrenal hyperplasia and testosterone , Blum means that it
is our chemical build up that determine our gender roles. Testosterone is what makes a man
manly, so any male lacking testosterone will look and act more feminine. The opposite goes for
women who have to much testosterone. Another example to support Blum s biological side for
gender is that testosterone is the leading cause of why men act the way they do. Men most often
have more testosterone then women. To further this idea Blum says, it not only has some body
building functions, it influences some behaviors as well. These behaviors include rowdy play,
sex drive, competitiveness, and in your face attitude (578). Words like rowdy play ,
competitiveness and sex drive are masculine characteristics that is why women with more
testosterone may choose the toy truck or weapon to play with. Higher levels of testosterone
could be what make some women appear masculine and some men appear feminine. My side of
the gender topic would be that gender is cultural. Yes some things are biological like we get our
eye color and our skin color from genetics. But the way we act is far more cultural, we learn to
act male or female from society. Our parents and television show us demonstrations of these
characteristics. I agree with Devor s beliefs on gender on how society builds these strict guidelines

Audrey Hepburn, S Influence On Hollywood s Life
Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I m possible ! (Audrey Hepburn) Hollywood s
golden age was a time where Hollywood was one of the most visible businesses in America and
higher quality sound and film that started from 1930 and to the 1960s. Many actors and actresses
had been an inspiration, like Audrey Hepburn who flourished during the last years. Audrey
Hepburn, famous actress, dancer and fashionista, is the most known person in the 1960s for her
amazing acting that makes her one of the best of all time. Audrey Hepburn had a arduous
childhood, many events happening but make her a perseverant person. First and foremost, A
native of Brussels, Hepburn spent part of her youth in England at a boarding school there. During
much of World War II, she studied at the Arnhem Conservatory in The Netherlands. Education was
the simplest thing in her life at the time as she was going through the war and family change, but
manages to keep an education unlike maybe some others. Furthermore, Audrey Hepburn also had
been alive during the time of World War II and her childhood had been affected greatly because of
such dramatic changes. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Hepburn used the
name Edda van Heemstra, because an English sounding name was considered dangerous during the
German occupation. Also, Her family was profoundly affected by the occupation, with Hepburn
later stating that had we known that we were going to be occupied for five years, we

Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought by the largest number of soldiers, totaling 172,000 young men
( American Civil War ). During the Civil War, our nation was divided by the North (Union Army)
and the South (Confederate Army) for opposing viewpoints on slavery and states rights. The Battle
of Gettysburg was fought over three long, arduous days. The soldiers struggled under their
respected generals in a 25 mile battle zone ( American Civil War ). This battle was a triumphant
victory and a heart wrenching loss for the troops of the Yankee North and Rebel South. The
complexity of the Battle of Gettysburg brought together two fronts whose decisions and
commitment would determine its outcome. Many generals commanded forces during this... Show

On the other hand, the Confederates retained control of only Seminary Ridge. This setback for
the South was likely the result of General Ewell s failure to follow Lee s command (King 15 17).
Despite this, the Rebel s morale remained optimistic as they initiated the fighting on the
following morning (King 18). Union forces retaliated and saved their position until one of
General Meade s commanders staged his own offensive battle (Appleby, Joyce 486; King 22).
This Union general was Dan Sickles. By moving his position without consulting General Meade,
a bulge was created. This foolish mistake allowed 1,600 Confederate soldiers to rush the Union
line to overtake Peach Orchard, capturing 1,000 Yankee prisoners (King 22). Another Union Army
general, G.K. Warren, secured and protected a hill called Little Round Top before Confederates
claimed it which helped combat the loss from Sickle s blunder ( American Civil War ). At this
point in the Battle of Gettysburg, both North and South sustained large numbers of casualties. The
Southern casualties roughly totaled 7,000 of 22,000 troops. The North suffered even more by
losing 15,000 soldiers. Both sides needed to re evaluate their battle strategies. Lee thought victory
for the South was possible with better timing and artillery. Conversely, Meade and his other Union
generals decided to stay in their current position and continue the battle (King 22). After dawn on
July 3, 1863, Union soldiers fired upon

My Personal Opinion On The Game
I ve had the pleasure of enjoying about five or six hours of MP thus far, (I ve lost count.)
including an entirely sleepless night I took to stay up and continue playing to beat the campaign at
hand. Below, I ve written a release day review to assist you in deciding whether you would enjoy
this gameor not.
First of all, make no mistake, Battlefield Hardline isn t simply a reboot of BF4. Though every BF
game is similar to the others, Battlefield Hardline appears to be the freshest attempt at BF since
the release of BC. In my personal opinion, I m stoked that this game is a bit different, because if I
desire a military based FPS, the community surrounding BF4 continues to actively thrive!
I quickly observed that loading times appear to be longer than usual for the majority of FPS
games. However, I ve only played 5 hours of MP, which doesn t include beta). So, keep that in
mind, because though I wanted to note this fact, I don t want to create the impression that I don t
know how the game will ultimately play on your system when it s cooled down or that I m
knowledgeable about the progression system.
Reasons Why You Should Play the Campaign
Visceral has made a concerted effort to create an immersive campaign. In fact, it s my favorite BF
campaign, only second to BC2, obviously! I m entirely cognizant that it being my favored
campaign isn t really enough of a reason for you to gauge you re interest, but I want to further
convey my enjoyment I

Advisory Board to aid health and environmental officials in deciding acceptable levels of
contamination of Gen x along with other obligations. Workers in the Department of
Environmental Quality and Department of Health and Human Services will decide the 11 board
members that will take part in this pursuit. In the beginning of August new jobs are being created
to help contain and study Gen x. Both the Department of Environmental Quality and the
Department of Health and Human Services request $2.6 million to these new jobs. Most of the
money went to the Department of Environmental Quality for the testing of Gen x and the 16 new
jobs to do the studying. The rest went to the Department of Health and Human Services to
analyze the contamination and inform the public of its health risks. Mid August they asked for
more money, but were denied. Legislators said that instead they would like to see money go local
groups in Wilmington whose work deals with Gen x in some way. The day after it was confirmed

Return on equity is stable throughout the year as well. Both profit margin and basic earnings
power are stable. Regarding earnings per share, there is a slight increase in Q2 and then a
continual decrease in Q3 and Q4. This is a result of a decrease in the average number of
common shares. The following table represents the debt ratios for ExxonMobil for FY 2011:
Debt Ratios| Q1| Q2| Q3| Q4| Annual| Total Debt| .51| .50| .50| .51| .51| Interest Coverage|

remained stable in all periods in 2011 and is below 1:1, which is a good indication of the
company maintaining its leverage. Interest coverage ratio shows a downward trend in Q2 and
Q3 with a slight increase in Q4. These results are derived from an increase in interest expense.
These changes are not very significant to the success of the business as the company s ratio is
well above 1.5, which implies the company is not burdened by its debt expenses. Debt/Equity
ratio remained stable in all periods with a slight increase in Q4 as a result of increased liabilities.

Movie Theater And Choosing A Seat
1.When walking into a movie theater and choosing a seat, the appropriate interval all depends on
how full the theater is. When a person pays for a movie ticket, they understand the possibility of
not receiving the ideal seating. Most movie theaters operate on a first come first served basis. In
my estimation, the appropriate spacing between people at a movie theateris one seat. I don t have a
problem sitting next to a stranger in a movie theater with one seat separating us. I understand
sometimes sitting next to a stranger in inevitable, I have had to do it many times. Movie theaters
become very dark once the movie starts, which causes people to feel uncomfortable because they
are vulnerable without sight.

Most people are not going to be able to experience wizard magic, space, or getting stuck on a
sinking ship. A lesson can be learned from any situation, whether it s what to do, or not to do.
Another positive is that movies teach diversity. These popular commercial films are full of
different ideas, people, and elements. When people watch diverse movies, it allows them to
become more open and accepting in our everyday lives.
A negative aspect is the violence that is included in these movies. Children and teens have seen
these movies and get the ideas in their heads that it is okay to emulate these actions. Young
minds are malleable, which could lead to different problems in the future of these young people.
Another negative aspect of these movies is that they distract from life. This could also be a good
thing because people need breaks sometimes, but we can t be distracted all of the time. If we had
a choice between working and entering a world unlike our own through movies, most people would
probably choose to be somewhere else mentally.
3. I chose the very beginning of the Bourne Identity (2002) to look for camera techniques because
this portion of the film will be the first seen by the viewers. In the opening scene the viewer is

angle was employed by the filmmaker to show the audience that Jason Bourne is not a bad guy.

My Internship And The Washington Center Program
From the beginning of my internship to the end, my plans for the future have become even clearer
as I have completed my internship and the program. I came into this internship with a general idea
of what I wanted my future to look like, such as getting my masters, joining the military, and
working for federal law enforcement. However, now after completing my internship and The
Washington Center program I have a better idea of what I want my immediate futureto look like
after I graduate college. I plan to apply to as numerous agencies as possible in the fall and if I get
hired on, I will join the reserves. If I do not get hired, I will join active duty, and as I become
more experienced I will continue to apply to agencies until I am able to get a job in a federal
agency. I feel more equipped for a job in law enforcement after I have expanded my knowledge
and abilities. Throughout my internship, I was able to expand my software knowledge in Excel,
Tableau, and Visio. Tableau is a computer software program used to support data and create
visualizations based on the data, such as graphs and tables. I used tableau as part of my brief to
upper managementin order to make the data I was presenting clearer. Another type of visual aid I
developed during my internship was the program Visio. I used Visio to create several diagrams to
show cost avoidance. Lastly, I was able to update my abilities on Excel, a skill I have obtained for

  • 2. An Analysis Of PoBoy Blues By Langston Hughes The poem Po Boy Blues was composed by Langston Hughes during 1926, his early writing era. His poetry was inspired by his family s history, a history full of abandonment, betrayal, and violence. His father abandoned him seeking to find a life less confrontational to a black man, leaving Langston Hughes to face being raised by his grandmother in the very same hostile environment his father sought to escape. His motherbetrayed him as she never embraced him with a mother s love not only once leaving him as a young child, but twice when he came to live with her after his grandmother died. His grandmother immersed Langston in his familys dark history, sometimes laying the bullet ridden shawl on him from where his grandfather died... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rise of new machines, industries (railroad, oil, steel), and buildings contributed to a major upsurge in the prosperity of the American nation. In 1860, no American city had a population over one million; by 1890, three cities had passed the million mark. New York City became the second largest city in the world after London in 1900. The substantial growth of the U.S economically can be contributed to a group of wealthy capitalists that ran businesses/industries and stimulated economic growth. However, historians have argued over whether these capitalists were robber barons that were corrupt and took advantage of the American people or captains of industry that helped the U.S grow at unparalleled speeds. Wealthy capitalists such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were indeed captains of industry who enlarged American industry and businesses, used their wealth to better their communities, and elevated the United States to new heights as one of the leading industrial powers of the entire world. There are roughly four main kinds of political philosophy around today Libertarianism, Socialism, Liberalism and Communitarianism. Political theory is an attempt to understand people, what we are like as individuals, what society and the state are like, and how we as humans, the state and society all interact with one and other. To run the state a very high level of technical knowledge would be required, as only the brightest people should be in charge of it and run it. Hobbes, a seventeenth century English philosopher, is generally regarded as the first modern political philosopher; he is famous for his early and elaborate development of what has come to be known as social contract theory . He is infamous for having used the social contract method to arrive at the astonishing conclusion that we ought to submit to the authority of an absolute, undivided and unlimited, sovereign power. He conceived of politics as science. In his theory of ballistics (guns and missiles) objects moved at random, and were likely to collide with one and other. Hobbes viewed society in much the same way; we all as individuals are more or less equal, we seek pleasure and avoid pain. This will undoubtedly lead to competition between individuals. Because of this Hobbes characterizes the state of nature as a state of war, where the life of the individual according to him would be solitary, poore, nasty, brutish and short . This Hobbesian state of nature is so horrible that individuals would want to avoid it at all costs. Our identity defines our personality traits, highlight social roles. Those with disabilities are often confused about their identity because they are misunderstood and stigmatized. Through the use of literature, one can empathize better with other people especially those who are misunderstood by society. Disabled people are more likely to be neglected and subjected to prejudice or discrimination. In Delusionof Grandeur , Terry Ann Thaxton, talks about the struggle between Adam and his mother because of his disability. Adam struggles to cope with his environment and finds himself isolated and misunderstood. Families ultimately suffer but through their experience, they can learn some amazing lessons. Adam in Delusion of Grandeur is terribly misunderstood. His mother tries everything in her power to fix him. Taking care of someone like Adam can be strenuous and tiring. The day to day strain of providing assistance can lead to exhaustion and fatigue. This can create a whole set of issues that create emotional stress, guilt, anxiety, anger , and uncertainty about the future. At the same time, caretaking responsibilities may lead to changed or abandoned career plans. Adam s mother went as far as signing up for school so that she can monitor her son s behavior. An ancient Chinese text on mathematics, the Chou Pei also gives an evidence that the Chinese knew about the Pythagorean theorem many years before Pythagoras or one of his followers (Joseph, 2000, p. 180). • 12. Exile In Beowulf The halls regaled in Old English Literature were safe havens for lords, warriors and clansmen alike, the halls had a complex association with the self in these times. Exile was equivalent to certain death to the Anglo Saxons; they were without protection from their lord or their clan and were wandering without a sense of belonging. In The Wandererthe theme of exile as a type of hell is apparent from the poet s narration of the wanderer s internal monologue. He laments how he is forced to travel the exile s path (Crossley Holland, line 5, pp.50) after his lords death and how he is perpetually alone without any kinsmen by his side. To paraphrase Thomas Shippey in Bloom s Guides: Beowulf , mead halls are a place of happiness and full of light; whereas monsters are creatures that have to be covered by darkness (Shippey). Those who seek safety within the walls of the hall shall be protected for the monsters that dwell beyond. Heaven is a place often portrayed as being bathed in light much like the halls in Old English literature, while exile is more closely aligned with the Christian idea of hell, a dark place void of protection and companionship. Continuing with Beowulf, characters can also be used as modes to convey this message. The contrast between Beowulf and Grendel is almost as opposite as the halls and exile or Heaven and Hell. Beowulf is celebrated and a great protector of those who follow behind him, bathed in the light of the halls he spends time in. While Grendel is exiled with only his mother for companionship and hides in the cloak of darkness, always stalking unable to withstand the light of the halls. Stanley Baldwin touches on this idea in his companion book, CliffsNotes; Beowulf , he describes Heorot as it is a place of light, warmth, and joy, contrasting with Grendel s morbid swamp as well as the dark and cold of winters in Scandinavia (Baldwin, pp.76). The idea of the hall as a sort of heaven like structure is explored in Bede s Ecclesiastical History of the English People he talks of a sparrow flying through a hall in a winter s storm, ...While inside, he is safe from the winter storms; but after a few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintery world from which he came (Bede et al., pp.130 131). • 13. A Few South Africans By Sue Williamson Essay A Few South Africans is a series of works by Sue Williamson that truly interested me. This prominent South African English artist, known for her politically and societally questioning artworks, investigates the natural strength of black South African women, and how they were oppressed during this period. In this essay, I will attempt to understand the situation of South Africa s past and in turn its present with the help of her references and her work. The main theme of Williamson s piece is female activism and freedom of expression during a time of conflict in their country. It attempts to show how all women were affected by apartheid. The motives for wanting a fairer society based on equal distribution of wealth and power between different races shouldn t be a tricky idea to understand. To explain is simple. To change is much harder. Nevertheless, Williamson attempts to answer these questions. In some ways we can empathise, because our society has been through a similar struggle for the recognition of women in society, namely the Suffragette Movement. This struggle for the vote took 110 years and true parity is ongoing. The women in Williamson s work were all important in developing the limited freedom of black South Africans today. Compared to their white brothers and sisters, Black South Africans still only own 30% of all land in South Africa. Sue Williamson highlights the work of trailblazers like Winnie Mandela (left). • 14. A Natural Start Of Life A natural start to life: Aristotle, a famous philosopher, believed in the notion of spontaneous generation, the idea that life could arise from inanimate objects. Louis Pasteur famously dispelled this theory, when he showed that organisms will only arise if the parental species is initially present in a closed system. However, this conclusion relates to the generation of new organisms from parental ones, not the origin of life itself. The first organism had no parental species, therefore the organism had to have originated from non living matter. Stanley L. Miller kick started the study of the origin of life with his famous 1953 prebiotic soup experiment in which he took a mixture of reduced gases believed to represent the atmospheric conditions on primordial Earth and reacted them together in a spark discharge apparatus. The results were surprising, with a mixture of biochemically relevant organic molecules spontaneously being formed, including amino acids an essential building block of life. Miller s results showed that organic molecules could be generated from inorganic ones, a finding that inspired the modern era of understanding the origin of life and challenged common perceptions. Now, in the dawn of the 20th century, there are two main theories that dominate the field, the metabolism first theory and the RNA world theory. The term RNA world was coined by in 1986 by, Walter Gilbert; however the idea of independent RNA life can be traced to Carl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Euripides As A Tragic Tragedy The Big Three of Greek tragedy has always been Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. As a late comer to the stage of tragedy in comparison to the others, Euripides formed his reputation by building off the works of others. For instance, in Hekabe, Euripides incorporated already known characters and concepts from The Orestia written by Aeschylus. Despite the fact that Euripides appears to build off the work of others, Aristotle honors him with the title of the most tragic playwright. Euripides stood out by using a novel structure for tragedy. In a typical tragedy, the protagonist is the central characterin the play and an antagonist brings about the suffering and downfall of the protagonist, which the audience is supposed to pity. Euripides breaks from this archaic model by producing tragedies without a clear antagonist. Without this pivotal character role, the play is able to take on a more tragic persona. Aristotle expresses his thoughts about tragedy in his book Poetics. In the chapter titled The Best Kinds of Tragic Plot, Aristotle dives into how a plot should be structured (page 20, Poetics). Aristotle believes a simplistic plot structure using common households is best (page 20, Poetics). He uses Euripides as an example of what to do, stating that those who criticize his work for using already established characters are making a mistake. Euripides utilizes the audience s background knowledge of his characters to his advantage. He is able to embellish his plays by alluding to references already known to the audience to further the plot. For example, in Hekabe, during the sacrifice of Polyxena there were parallels to the sacrifice of Agamemnon s daughter Iphigenia. This detail in the play builds Agamemnon s character without going off on a long anecdote about his past. Aristotle believed that despite Euripides s incorporation of already established characters, it was the structure of his plots which allows him to be regarded as the most tragic of poets. (page 22, Poetics). As previously stated, Euripides distinguishes himself from other playwrights by embracing a unique style of having unclear antagonistic roles. His play Hekabe is a perfect example because the antagonistic role is obscure. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Is Scrooge A Selfish Person Even though Scrooge was selfish at the beginning he still should deserve a second chance. In the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a protagonist named Scrooge, was a selfish and mean person but then he changes throughout the story. I describe him as selfish, unfriendly, and a kind person. The reason why I described him as a selfish person is because he didn t give money to the poors and thought they were scumbags. The second reason why I called Scrooge a unfriendly person is because he didn t want to go to his nephew s dinner and he doesn t say kind things to people. The last reason why I think Scrooge is a kind person is because at the end he gave money to the poors and felt sorry for Tiny Tim. Scrooge does change from being selfish and unfriendly person to a kind person in the end. First, Scrooge is a selfish person and he only cares about himself. On page 256 Scrooge says, I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish, sir, that is my answer. I don t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can t afford to make idle people merry. This shows how Scrooge doesn t want to help the poors which means he only cares about himself. On page 264 Belle says, We have never lied to one another. May you be happy in the life you have chosen. • 30. Questions On Pascal s Wager I am arguing that Pascal s Wager is significantly stronger of a rationale when more social factors are taken into consideration. In his time, Blaise Pascal formed the foundation of the Pascal s Wager we know of today, posthumously in the form of Infinirien . Though this is more easily defensible then Pascal Wager, the modified version has garnered enough popularity and has enough similar that it is the target of most criticisms. Pascal came up with a theory of understanding the consequences of not believing in Godversus those that came with believing in him. From his calculations he determined that since believing in God had the same result as not believing when God didn t exist. When God did exist however, the consequences of not believing were dire and the reward for believing was infinite. Pascal tried to explain that believing in God was the rational decision when such infinite rewards of heaven and such punishment of hell are possibilities. Social implications are crucial to understanding how Pascal s Wager might apply today and in countries of all different cultures. I will discuss three of the most common objections toward Pascal s Wager and illustrate how considering just a few social factors make the decision to believe in God more rational then not. Then, I will explain how though there s not enough evidence toward believing unswervingly, there is still enough positive implications that can warrant accepting your socially acceptable faith. • 31. Hidden Figures By Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan And... Hidden Figures Film Analysis Hidden Figures is a 2016 film that recounts the story of three incredible black women in NASA history: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. The film largely sheds light on the experiences of these three women working as computers for NASA during 1960s segregated America. Public restrooms are separated between the whites and coloreds, the white male patriarchy dominates the field, and as always, racism is alive and well. During the film, the political unrest of the country is present and very much of conversation, and as these three women navigate their way throughout society with positions no one expects them to hold, they quite literally make history through their groundbreaking work, history... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The acting of the three main characters was genuine, honest, and truly exemplary. What I also found to be quite interesting and perhaps a weakness of the film, was the sense of performative racism that four of the main white characters utilize and how the makers of the film appeal to such a phenomenon through symbolisms as well. In the movie, there seems to be two main kinds of racism the characters exhibit, one of them being blatant racism and another being subtle racism through microaggressions. For example, Katherine experiences blatantly racist and misogynistic behavior from her coworkers, especially from Paul Stafford, the lead engineer (making groupthink much easier) and Ruth, the only other woman working in the office. On the other hand, Al Harrison and John Glenn appeal to the subtler sides of racism and performative white pity, Glenn going out of his way to shake the hands of the computers as the film attempted to paint a positive, not all whites picture of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance, a kind of racism that almost all of the white people in the film come to, by its end. Examples of this can be seen in scenes like the one in which Al Harrison smashes down the coloreds and whites restroom signs as if implying that doing so will abolish all racial inequalities with a couple of blows of blunt force. One could infer it seems, that paired with the groundbreaking stories of these three women, white people being decent human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hamlets erratic behaviors have proved that he has gone completely mad. He has depression over his father s death, and his constant mentions of suicide. He also has borderline personality disorder due to the ghost of his father visiting leaving stress, and anxiety towards the task of killing his uncle for revenge, being the reason it took Hamlet so long to complete this. The motif I want to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle, and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra s mortal enemy. Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor boy and made his fortune employing contract labor in the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel describes their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten acre park and was the finest property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra would throw balls and garden parties, where she would have the band play their music (10). Myra s aunt said that Myra had everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway piano , and how her uncle took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters there (10 11). At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love with a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr. Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort with Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. The problem with this thinking is that dull knives require more force to actually complete the cutting action, which in turn makes the user more likely to lose control and accidentally injure themselves because the knife went somewhere it should not have gone. Myth 3: Harder Blades Stay Sharp Longer While hardness definitely is a factor in how sharp an edge a blade can hold, there is thing as a blade being too hard. • 39. Light In The Forest Johnny Tremain Analysis Compare and Contrast Essay Rough Draft The Light in the Forest, by Conrad Richter, and Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes, are two incredibly distinct novels, each with their own similarities and differences when compared to one another. True Son, the protagonist in Light in the Forest, is a fifteen year old boy raised by a tribe of Delaware Indians for the past eleven years of his life. Though he is biologically American, he wholeheartedly considers himself a full blooded Indian. This not only creates turmoil when he is forcibly moved to his biological white family but causes True Son confusion when he is forced to choose between not only his two families but his two other identities as well. On the other hand, Johnny Tremain, the protagonist in the novel Johnny Tremain, faces a completely different situation for he is a fourteen year old boy living in colonial Boston. He is at first entirely self centered and arrogant due to his prodigious gifts as a silversmith apprentice. However, when an unfortunate injury results in him having a crippled hand, this destroys any chance of him being an adequate silversmith. He faces humiliation but through many struggles and difficulties transforms into a patriotic man. Through analyzing the two novels, there were many similarities and differences found. Similarities include the difficult journey they both encounter as well as their similar behavior. On the contrary, both individuals differ through their race and how they were brought up. Both True Son and Johnny Tremain desire to stay in a comfortable setting. They greatly enjoy their life and make no wish to change it. And yet, both characters were forced to face hardships which ultimately changes both their situation as well as their perspectives in life. For instance, Johnny Tremain had a comfortable position in life. He was widely considered the most talented young silversmith in Boston. Though he was egotistic, he was destined for a bright future. Today it is not just that if you have male parts, you are a man, the opposite goes for women. According to the authors Aaron Devor and Deborah Blum. Testosterone is what makes a man manly, so any male lacking testosterone will look and act more feminine. The opposite goes for women who have to much testosterone. Another example to support Blum s biological side for gender is that testosterone is the leading cause of why men act the way they do. Men most often have more testosterone then women. To further this idea Blum says, it not only has some body building functions, it influences some behaviors as well. These behaviors include rowdy play, sex drive, competitiveness, and in your face attitude (578). Words like rowdy play , competitiveness and sex drive are masculine characteristics that is why women with more testosterone may choose the toy truck or weapon to play with. Higher levels of testosterone could be what make some women appear masculine and some men appear feminine. My side of the gender topic would be that gender is cultural. Yes some things are biological like we get our eye color and our skin color from genetics. But the way we act is far more cultural, we learn to act male or female from society. The rest went to the Department of Health and Human Services to analyze the contamination and inform the public of its health risks. Mid August they asked for more money, but were denied. Legislators said that instead they would like to see money go local groups in Wilmington whose work deals with Gen x in some way. When a person pays for a movie ticket, they understand the possibility of not receiving the ideal seating. Most movie theaters operate on a first come first served basis. In my estimation, the appropriate spacing between people at a movie theateris one seat. I don t have a problem sitting next to a stranger in a movie theater with one seat separating us. I understand sometimes sitting next to a stranger in inevitable, I have had to do it many times. Movie theaters become very dark once the movie starts, which causes people to feel uncomfortable because they are vulnerable without sight. I feel that the appropriate ... A lesson can be learned from any situation, whether it s what to do, or not to do. Another positive is that movies teach diversity. These popular commercial films are full of different ideas, people, and elements. When people watch diverse movies, it allows them to become more open and accepting in our everyday lives. A negative aspect is the violence that is included in these movies. Children and teens have seen these movies and get the ideas in their heads that it is okay to emulate these actions. This could also be a good thing because people need breaks sometimes, but we can t be distracted all of the time. If we had a choice between working and entering a world unlike our own through movies, most people would probably choose to be somewhere else mentally. 3. My Internship And The Washington Center Program From the beginning of my internship to the end, my plans for the future have become even clearer as I have completed my internship and the program. I came into this internship with a general idea of what I wanted my future to look like, such as getting my masters, joining the military, and working for federal law enforcement. However, now after completing my internship and The Washington Center program I have a better idea of what I want my immediate futureto look like after I graduate college. I plan to apply to as numerous agencies as possible in the fall and if I get hired on, I will join the reserves. If I do not get hired, I will join active duty, and as I become more experienced I will continue to apply to agencies until I am able to get a job in a federal agency. I feel more equipped for a job in law enforcement after I have expanded my knowledge and abilities. Throughout my internship, I was able to expand my software knowledge in Excel, Tableau, and Visio. Tableau is a computer software program used to support data and create visualizations based on the data, such as graphs and tables. I used tableau as part of my brief to upper managementin order to make the data I was presenting clearer. Another type of visual aid I developed during my internship was the program Visio. I used Visio to create several diagrams to show cost avoidance. Lastly, I was able to update my abilities on Excel, a skill I have obtained for years, but now am able to do more advanced ...
