Many patients diagnosed with eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) exhibit a combination of symptoms from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa without meeting the full criteria for either disorder. EDNOS accounts for 50-70% of eating disorder cases. Breaking EDNOS into more specific diagnoses could help treatment. Criteria like frequency of binge eating and compensatory behaviors, level of fear about weight and body image, and menstrual changes may distinguish subsets of EDNOS patients.
