Let’s say that you are researching a topic that concerns all fifth-grade students in the United States. Trying to gather data for every fifth-grade student in the United States is not a feasible task. A researcher would not even have access to that many students. A generalization will be concluded about the population that is being studied and that generalization will need an adequate sampling in order to be valid. “The sample is the group of elements or a single element, from which data are obtained” (McMillan, 1996, p. 86). Sampling allows for the study of a part that represents a whole of a population and techniques are needed to ensure that the sample will lead to a valid conclusion. “Sampling techniques tell us how to select cases that can lead to valid generalizations about a population, or the entire group you wish to learn about” Check & Schutt, 2012, p. 91). The sample must be an ideal representation of the population that is being studied. The sample must share the same characteristics of those of the total population (Check & Schutt, 2012).
Before determining the sample, it is important to have a detailed description of the population characteristics that is to form the focus of the study. There are a variety of methods in determining sampling for educational research and the caliber of representatives is based on the sampling procedures used (McMillan, 1996). Check and Schutt (2012) state that an important distinction about samples is whether they are based on a probability or a nonprobability sampling method. When using the probability sampling, the researcher knows in advance the likelihood the any element of a population will be selected for the study (Check & Schutt, 2012). “Probability sampling is a method of sampling in which the subjects are selected randomly in such a way that the researcher knows the probability of selecting each member of the population” (McMillan, 1996, p. 87). The random selection reduces the chance of having systematic bias in the selection elements. Sampling methods that do not let the researcher know in advance the likelihood of selection is called nonprobability sampling methods (Check & Schutt, 2012). “Nonprobability sampling methods can be useful when random sampling is not possible, when a research question does not concern a larger population, and when a preliminary exploratory study is appropriate” (Check & Schutt, 2012, p. 112).
Probability sampling methods are further broken down into types of random sampling. There are four types of random sampling: simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, cluster sampling, and stratified random sampling. The purpose of this final paper is to enhance your knowledge and understanding of normal development during adolescence or adulthood. You should select a developmental task (or tasks) appropriate for either adolescence or adulthood.
For example, the development of an identity is a task that typically occurs during adolescence in Erickson’s theory of psychosocial development. You should review the literature related to this developmental task and write a comprehensive literature review that addresses not only the traditional views and theoretical explanations for this task, but also explores non-traditional explanations as well. For example, if you choose the issue of spousal abuse, you must address the traditional views outlined in the literature which define the cause and role of battering in interpersonal relationships including the alternative view of some theorists that violence in relationships can be viewed as acceptable behavior.
In so doing, you must identify the value systems underlying both traditional and alternative views on the issues. Your literature review may focus on normal development in adolescence or adulthood, or abnormal development.

Your research paper is the “capstone” project for this course and, as such, counts as
25% of your course grade for ENG 101. This project will be based upon one of the

Total number of students is 45; in which there are 27 males and 18 female. 2 ELLs.
A majority of them come from very wealthy families. The ELLs are children of ambassadors, while three more are studying on scholarships.
Stage 1: This FIRST stage is to determine the “Big Picture”; what you want students to learn, conceptually, at the unit’s conclusion. (For the purpose of this class, consider a unit to be three days)

Common Core State Standard: The State requires that the student s to read stories and literature. I will ensure this by giving the students each a copy of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. This will help get their creative juices flowing in preparation for the unit.
Measurable Unit Objective: By the end of the unit, the students should have mastered the principles of a creative story. They should be able to apply these principles whenever they are required to write creative essays.

Let’s say that you are researching a topic that concerns all fifth-grade students in the United States. Trying to gather data for every fifth-grade student in the United States is not a feasible task. A researcher would not even have access to that many students. A generalization will be concluded about the population that is being studied and that generalization will need an adequate sampling in order to be valid. “The sample is the group of elements or a single element, from which data are obtained” (McMillan, 1996, p. 86). Sampling allows for the study of a part that represents a whole of a population and techniques are needed to ensure that the sample will lead to a valid conclusion. “Sampling techniques tell us how to select cases that can lead to valid generalizations about a population, or the entire group you wish to learn about” Check & Schutt, 2012, p. 91). The sample must be an ideal representation of the population that is being studied. The sample must share the same characteristics of those of the total population (Check & Schutt, 2012).
Before determining the sample, it is important to have a detailed description of the population characteristics that is to form the focus of the study. There are a variety of methods in determining sampling for educational research and the caliber of representatives is based on the sampling procedures used (McMillan, 1996). Check and Schutt (2012) state that an important distinction about samples is whether they are based on a probability or a nonprobability sampling method. When using the probability sampling, the researcher knows in advance the likelihood the any element of a population will be selected for the study (Check & Schutt, 2012). “Probability sampling is a method of sampling in which the subjects are selected randomly in such a way that the researcher knows the probability of selecting each member of the population” (McMillan, 1996, p. 87). The random selection reduces the chance of having systematic bias in the selection elements. Sampling methods that do not let the researcher know in advance the likelihood of selection is called nonprobability sampling methods (Check & Schutt, 2012). “Nonprobability sampling methods can be useful when random sampling is not possible, when a research question does not concern a larger population, and when a preliminary exploratory study is appropriate” (Check & Schutt, 2012, p. 112).
Probability sampling methods are further broken down into types of random sampling. There are four types of random sampling: simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, cluster sampling, and stratified random sampling. For this assignment, you will choose one of the three classic psychology experiment publications posted on BB. These classic articles all share a common theme of highlighting how behavior is influenced by different situations, including Conditioning, Imitation/Modeling, and Learned Helplessness. Reading these articles will tie well with material we cover regarding learning and behavior. Note that these articles are old. Therefore the language may also be old, as well as the format and style of the article.
For the article you choose to read, you will answer the corresponding questions asked below in a succinct/concise 2 page (typed, single spaced) paper. The questions you will answer are meant to be thought provoking - they will require you to give explanations ‘outside the box’.
THE 3 ARTICLES AND THEIR QUESTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:
1. “Transmission of aggression through imitation of aggressive models” by Bandura, Ross, and Ross (1963): This is one of the first classic experiments conducted to show how children learn simply by watching others, specifically through imitation and modeling. Children watched adults act aggressively toward a toy during this study, and researchers recorded each child’s behavior afterward. As you read about this study, notice the age of the children, the gender of the children and any effects gender had on the results, the different conditions of behavior, who performed the observable behavior, and other key components involved in this study. In your critical thinking paper, reflect on the study and discuss the questions presented below:
A. In your paper, describe the importance of this study. What were the key findings, and what did you learn? (6pts)
1. 3 points for explaining overall importance of the study. Here, the student should describe the big picture, what the results mean, and overall the reasons why this study was so famous.
2. 2 points for explaining the key findings (at least two key findings, 1 point per finding).
3. 1 point for explaining what the student learned.
B. Although the article was written years ago, do you think the findings are still applicable today? Explain why or why not. (5pts)
1. 1 point for saying yes or no.
2. 4 points for explaining the reason. The more thought-out the answer, the better the answer. If the student just gives one short reason to support their answer, then this will only be partial credit (2 or less points). If they have two or more reasons to support their answer, then this is getting closer to full credit (4 points).
C. Explain what similar situations exist today in an everyday real-world situation, and how these situations could be related to Bandura’s study. Despite great advances towards equality between the races and genders, racial and gender discrimination, as well as class stratification remain serious social problems. To conclude this course, you will use the news media to discover current social issues with regards to race and gender.
To complete this assignment, perform the following tasks:
Using newspapers, news websites, or news magazines, select three current events (within the last six months) that reflect our studies on stratification. One event should represent racial issues, one gender issues, and one class issues. All three should demonstrate discrimination and/or stratification in American society.
Using your research, describe the current events and how they are reflective of your studies on racial, gender, and class discrimination and/or stratification.
Analyze the events and apply the lecture and text to the news articles. What theories of stratification apply? Are the current events representative of the historical trends of racial, gender, and class discrimination and or/stratification? What solutions, if any, should be applied to these current events?
In your discussion, apply your personal experiences and observations to the current events.
How do you feel that the media perpetuates discrimination and/or stratification based on race, gender, and class? Support your ideas with concepts from the text and/or appropriate outside resources.
Provide a minimum of three references and apply the correct APA standards in the format of text, citations, and references. Your paper should include a title page and reference. Your paper should be at least five pages in length, not including the title and reference pages.
