Innovate to Alleviate: Exploring How the Role of an Enhanced Care Worker Coul...ILC- UK
‘Innovate to Alleviate: Exploring How the Role of an Enhanced Care Worker Could Address Skills Shortages in the Social Care Sector’ constitutes the first qualitative investigation of an emerging role within the adult social care sector: the ‘Enhanced Care Worker’ (ECW), where care workers are trained to undertake clinical tasks traditionally done by nurses.
The first scoping review of its kind to examine the development of the ECW role, this qualitative investigation will be published on Wednesday, 22nd June. It was compiled from a number of interviews with individuals from all levels of the care home sector, including managers, Registered Nurses, ECWs, and high-level representatives from organisations that oversee a number of care homes.
In order to explore the challenges and opportunities this new role presents, we are inviting parliamentarians, industry leaders, academics and care worker representatives to a panel discussion in the House of Lords.

2. THE ORGANISATION – CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
HOSPITALS
• Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH)
is a family of hospitals in Cambridge.
• CUH run a variety of different
volunteering programmes aimed at
different age groups.
• I worked as a volunteer in the Young
Person’s Programme (YPP), a
programme which helps young
people gain great experience of
working in a clinical setting such as a
hospital.
3. MY ROLES AS A VOLUNTEER
• I volunteered on the diabetes and endocrinology
wards, where patients would often be quite frail and
confined to their beds.
• My role as a volunteer would be to engage with the
patients, as they may have been feeling lonely, anxious,
or isolated due to their situation.
• These kinds of interactions can be really important to
the patients, and genuinely make a real difference in
their day.
4. SKILLS I LEARNT FROM THIS WORK EXPERIENCE
Communication
• Interacting and engaging with patients improved my ability to communicate with new people.
• I learnt how to communicate with people who are in a vulnerable situation.
Teamwork:
• On the wards I would work in a team of three people, and we would have to work together to
coordinate our time so that we could get round to every patient.
Maturity:
• Going in as a student, I still viewed myself as still a little immature, but working in a hospital
environment and seeing real people suffering from real problems really helped me mature.
Self-confidence:
• Improving my self-confidence was crucial to being able to engage with patients.
5. HOW THESE SKILLS HELPED ME/WILL HELP ME
• Communication – future career working in healthcare and working with patients.
• Teamwork – other jobs, for example working in the housekeeping team at the University of
Cambridge.
• Maturity – coming to university and living independently was made easier by the maturity I
developed in this job.
• Self-confidence – developing and improving my self-confidence has helped me in lots of
ways, particularly in interviews and in presentations.
The hospital day can seem long and dreary to people who are stuck in the wards.
A listening ear, a friendly smile, and a kind word are sometimes the things that really matter and mean the most.
I would often have to communicate with patients who were not always in the best state, so my interpersonal skills were really tested as I had to make sure I talked with clarity and diplomacy.
Sometimes talking to people as a group would help the patients feel more at ease.
