I am a customer oriented worker and I like to use my initiative. I am focused on providing service and care to
patients, service users and their families, and use my own problem solving and communication skills to do
so. I consciously, and conscientiously, practice patience and have an innate talent for communication, as well
as listening skills which I have refined over several years of working in customer service and during my
clinical placements. I have never had a problem handling complaints or amending mistakes. I am the kind of
person who owns up to my mistakes, and then makes every effort to amend them and avoid making the same
mistakes again. My time as a student in clinical placements on various wards has given me opportunity and
experience to practice this skill.
I am a naturally reflective person, and enjoy quiet individual hobbies such as knitting and cooking which
allow me time and opportunity to be with my own thoughts and reflect on the day. I use this reflective skill in
problem solving situations as well as during conflict resolution.
I believe that building rapport, with patients, service users and families, is important for holistic treatment; I
utilize my communication skills to build such a rapport with service users. I have had years of experience in
the customer service sector which has taught me a lot about personal autonomy, and customer satisfaction.
Being able to communicate with patients is important to enable care which the patient desires and chooses. I
have had the opportunity to practice communication skills with patients who have hearing and vision
impairments, learning disabilities, speech impairments, as well as those who do not speak English. I also use
my communication skills with colleagues in attempts to reduce other's stress by offering my assistance where
possible. As often as I ask for assistance, I offer my own aid and thank others for the aid they have provided
me. This habit of offering aid has been noted by those I've worked with, who have noted that it is helpful and
appreciated. I have noticed that offering aid to colleagues is particularly useful during acute and emergency
situations such as resuscitation events. Through observing and participating in such a collaborative scenario
as a resuscitation, I have seen exemplar displays of leadership, and promotion of morale which I aspire to
myself.
As well as enjoying individual hobbies, I have also participated in many team sports and hobbies which have
given me experience in leadership roles and team working, which has been highly useful in clinical
placement settings. Though not in a healthcare setting, I have previously held the role of supervisor in a
bakery. A job role which I earned after roughly four months of employment at Wilson’s Butchers. I have
recently taken on the role of Peer Assisted Learning Leader for my cohort group. The role involves me giving
my time, advice and support to second year student nurses who seek it out, as well as being a leader of
support to the other students in my group who are also participating in the pilot program.
I endeavor to put my best work into every task I do, and I operate under the belief that every patient deserves
the best care possible. Occasionally, this effort means that I have difficulty in completing tasks in a timely
manner. During my clinical placements I have been working on prioritizing tasks and delegating workload so
that I may maintain my high standards of care while still completing necessary tasks in the appropriate time
frame. A skill which has aided me in maintaining balance in my personal relationships, social life, work life
and studies. I believe I’m making progress; my various mentors have given me advice and guidance which
has helped me immensely. I am happy to attempt any task which I believe myself to be competent in, and I’m
not afraid to ask for help when I find I need it.
Personal Statement
2. I have found, through experience in other work areas and during clinical placements, I work well in areas of
high stress. In such areas, I prefer to work in a team where work load can be delegated and problem solving
is shared between different minds. That being said, I am capable of working on my own and not unnerved by
doing so. I embrace the use of a multi-disciplinary team, and believe it is desirable for effective patient care.
During clinical placements in the last two and a half years I have been encouraged and enabled to take on the
care of a group of patients. During those times I worked on my own and with others to provide care to
patients and service users.
I enjoy one-on-one patient contact, particularly for communication purposes, and for this reason I find myself
drawn to practice nursing. I have had placements within different community settings, and most enjoyed my
time with a General Practice Nurse. The opportunity to get to know patients and service users while
providing a range of different care and services interests me greatly, as well as the opportunity to grow and
develop further as a nurse. I intend to further my education, in the future, to become a Nurse Prescriber, and
eventually, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. I am not daunted by the amount of further work and education
this will entail, but I acknowledge it with a certain excitement.
I am generally proactive in my learning, and am often asking questions about procedures, tests, skills and
results. I like to put myself forward to learn new skills whenever the opportunity arises. I truly enjoy learning
new things; which, I feel, is important to nursing. Medicine and care fields are continuously growing and
evolving; continued learning ensures progressive, evidence-based practice. It is this drive to learn new things
and help people which has lead me to study nursing. I am currently studying Adult Nursing at the University
of Leeds with a view to qualify in September 2016.
Took initiative to find and file all my own paperwork to gain Spousal Visa for entry in to the UK, and later
to gain permanent residency.
Became supervisor within four months of employment with previous employer.
Will have achieved a BSc (Hons) degree at the end of my course.

In my spare time, after studies, I enjoy a few hobbies. I knit quite often, though my skills mostly include
various styles of blanket or scarf. I also enjoy reading, though lately most of what I read is of the academic
inclination. When I want to get away from the house I enjoy going for hikes with family and/or friends; or
doing other physical activities such as running or playing sports. I like visiting historical sites as well. I’m
always interested in local histories, especially the individual histories of the people who live there.
