Psalm 23: Satisfaction in the Good Shepherd
1. Where do you believe true satisfaction is found?
Satisfaction is found in the solace of the
Good Shepherd—Jesus Christ.
2. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in
green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
3. Even though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
4. You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow
me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
forever (Psalm 23).
5. I. Our Good Shepherd Provides for us
what we need (vv. 1-3).
6. • The Shepherd provides nourishment for
us.
• The Shepherd provides rest.
7. The clock is my dictator, I shall not rest.
It makes me lie down only when
exhausted.
It leads me to deep depression.
It hounds my soul.
It leads me in circles of frenzy for
activity’s sake.
8. Even though I run frantically from task to
task,
I will never get it all done.
For my “ideal” is with me.
Deadlines and my need for approval, they
drive me.
They demand performance from me, beyond
9. the limits of my schedule.
They anoint my head with migraines.
My in-basket overflows.
Surely fatigue and time pressure shall follow
me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the bonds of frustration
forever.
(Discipleship Journal, #60, 1990).
10. • The Shepherd provides nourishment for
us.
• The Shepherd provides rest.
• The Shepherd provides guidance.
11. II. Our Good Shepherd Protects us wherever
we are (vv. 4-5).
13. fear not, for I am with you; be not
dismayed, for I am your God; I will
strengthen you, I will help you, I will
uphold you with my righteous right hand
(Isaiah 41:10).
And Behold I am with you to the end of the
age (Matthew 28: 20).
14. III. Our Good Shepherd Promises us Final
Triumph (v. 6).
15. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If
God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He
who did not spare his own Son but gave him
up for us all, how will he not also with him
graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall
bring any charge against God's elect? It is God
who justifies.34 Who is to condemn?
16. Christ Jesus is the one who died—more
than that, who was raised—who is at the
right hand of God, who indeed is
interceding for us.35 Who shall separate us
from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation,
or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36
17. As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the
day long; we are regarded as sheep to be
slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him who loved us
(Romans 8:31-37).
18. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life,
nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor
things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will
be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:31-39).
19. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them,
and they follow me. I give them eternal life,
and they will never perish, and no one will
snatch them out of my hand (John 10:27-
28).
