1. During the first year, prune grapevines to select a single shoot to form the trunk and remove all other shoots and fruit. In the second year, prune laterals to develop the cordon structure along the top wire and pinch terminal shoots to encourage secondary growth.
2. In the third year, prune one-year-old wood back to spurs for the first fruiting. Use a bud count system like 30-10-10 based on pruned weight to balance fruiting and growth.
3. Comb shoots in summer to prevent tangling and encourage light penetration and quality fruit production. Annual pruning is needed to balance vegetative growth and fruit yield.
