When we say Prosodic features of speech, it is the rhythm and intonation (The way a
speaker’s voice rises and falls) of language:
This has five features:

PAUSE PITCH
STRESS VOLUME TEMPO
WHAT IS
PAUSE?
PAUSE:
•A TEMPORARY STOP, IT IS A SUDDEN SILENCE WHEN WE ARE
READING OR SPEAKING.
WHY DO WE NEED TO PAUSE?
•IT GIVES THE LISTENER TIME TO UNDERSTAND YOUR WORDS.
•IT EMPHASIZES ONE MAIN WORD IN A GROUP OF WORDS.
WHAT IS A PITCH?
PITCH IS THE DEGREE OF HIGHNESS OR LOWNESS OF
A TONE.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHANGE PITCH WHILE READING
OR SPEAKING?
IT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT GIVES EXPRESSION TO WHAT WE ARE
SAYING AND IT DOES NOT MAKE THE TALK BORING.
WHAT IS A STRESS?
IT IS TO PRONOUNCE (A SYLLABLE OR WORD) IN A LOUDER
OR MORE FORCEFUL WAY THAN OTHER SYLLABLES OR
WORDS. WHEN WE SAY STRESS IN SPEECH, IT IS ABOUT
THE EMPHASIS GIVEN TO THE SYLLABLE OR WORD. THE
STRESS HELPS IN CHANGING THE MEANING OF THE WORD.
THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO PUT
STRESS IN THE WORDS.
Read the words below, put the stress on the bold syllable of the words.

AS YOU HAVE NOTICED THEY HAVE THE SAME SPELLING
OF WORDS BUT BECAUSE OF THE STRESSED WE PUT ON
THE BOLD SYLLABLE IT TURNS OUT TO HAVE DIFFERENT
MEANINGS. THE STRESSED SYLLABLES OF THE NOUN
WORDS ARE IN THE FIRST SYLLABLE AND THE VERB
WORDS HAD IT IN THE LAST SYLLABLE. DON’T FORGET
THAT THE VOWELS ARE THE ONE WHO ARE BEING
STRESSED AND NOT THE CONSONANTS.
WHAT IS VOLUME?
IT IS THE DEGREE OF LOUDNESS OR THE
INTENSITY OF A SOUND. IT IS USED TO
SHOW EMOTIONS SUCH AS FEAR OR ANGER.
IT IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR TO CONSIDER BECAUSE IT DEPENDS IN OUR VOLUME
HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH OUR AUDIENCE. THE LISTENERS MAY FEEL BORED IF WE
HAVE LOW VOLUME AND THE CAN’T CLEARLY HEAR US. LISTENERS CAN ALSO MEASURE
YOUR CONFIDENCE BY YOUR VOLUME OF SPEAKING.
WHAT IS TEMPO?
IT IS THE RATE OR SPEED OF MOTION OR ACTIVITY; PACE. TEMPO
HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SPEED IN SPEAKING. TO
BECOME AN EFFECTIVE AND FLUENT SPEAKER, IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOULD NOT BE VERY FAST AND NOT TOO
SLOW.
PROSODIC FEATURES OF SPEECH
READ THE UNDERLINED WORD IN EACH SENTENCE. CHOOSE THE SENTENCE IN WHICH THE WORD HAS THE
SAME MEANING AS IN THE ORIGINAL SENTENCE. ENCIRCLE THE LETTER OF THE CORRECT ANSWER.
1. She took a trip to Florida.

D. I trip in the staircase.
2. I turned on the light so I could see better.
