Passion Can Become a Profession
Describe a specific interest or talent and how you have pursued it to date or wish to pursue it
in the future. (250-500 words) – Hunter College
“Allow your passion to become your purpose,
it will one day become you profession” – Gabriel Bernstien
I have found that passion inside of me that is going to be my profession. This passion
that so strongly consumes my everyday life is working with children with special needs. Some
people might say this is an interest but I also consider it to be a talent. I have learned that this is
not an easy task and not everyone can do it. I take pride in being able to provide structured
environment and the necessary support for these children. I look forward to helping these
children grow, learn and be all that I know they can be.
I have multiple opportunities to pursue this talent every day. One way is by being
involved in a program called “Challengers”; this is a volunteered run program. Children from
Mansfield come, play sports, and socialize with high school students. Even though I am out of
high school I continue to volunteer every week. Why you might ask? Well I have formed a
strong bond with a student who in ways can be extremely challenging. I love watching the
smile that’s brought to his face every time he enters the gym. This smile is formed because he
gets to run around, play, and have fun just like any other child.
The moment I knew I had a talent and natural gift with working with these children was
when I started working at the Bridge Center. The Bridge Center is located in Bridgewater MA
and offers year round programs for children with special needs. Here is where I have learned
Palardy 2
that this ability to work with children with special needs is my purpose in life. Here is where I
learned this passion doesn’t get taught. To be able to work with these children, you have to
have it come from within. I was hired at the age of 16. You might ask? So that’s when most
teens get a job. Well this job isn’t just any ordinary job. This job takes mental strength to know
that when these children take out their frustration physically on you or when you get bitten on
a daily basis it is not to be taken personally. This job takes physical strength to be able to
restrain kids from hurting themselves. This job takes knowledge in knowing what’s best for
each child. This job takes compassion in knowing that these children just have differently wired
brains. This job takes courage to find that light shining inside each child. The Bridge Center has
given me the confidence that I never had and have been looking for.
I am going to continue to work with these children who get looked down on every day. I
am going to fight for these children so they can prove they aren’t “dumb” just because they
can’t talk. I am going to pursue my dreams of helping these kids be all that I know they can be.
It is my goal to bring a smile to each child’s face no matter what their ability is. I will make the
difference in these children’s lives. I know I have a passion but I also know I have a rare talent.
Post Write: I actually really like this version. I think that it is much better than my first
draft. I think I write better when it is something I am passionate about or like. I think that this
draft is nicely organized. It also answers the prompt but also has more to it. I really liked the
quote I found because I think that it perfectly fits this topic.
