Project Overview Text Messaging Alert By: Jasper Kange Ervin Blaylock Destine Hood Mohamed Ali
Description Our goal is to create a easy more efficient and in some cases a safer way to contact emergency services. -for more info… List location or contact for specification (or other related documents)
Project Goals Ultimate goal of this project is to create a system that makes the worst case scenario into a slightly safer situation. And eliminate the need to verbally communicate when doing so could escalate the situation.
Problem definition The problem is every day people are in situations where they are unable to explain there emergency to the dispatch. They are unable to do so because talking could further endanger them. If there was a system developed where a person inside of the emergency situation could explain their emergency with out talking. We feel that if a person was able to text (sums) then they would lower the risk of putting themselves in more danger.
History of the problem Short Messaging Service (SMS) also known as texting was an accidental success that took nearly everyone that surprised everyone is the mobile world. Few people predicted that this hard of use service would take off. There was hardly any promotion for or mention of SMS by network operators until after SMS started to be a success. SMS advertising went from showing business people in suits entering text messages to bright pink and yellow advertisements aimed at the youth markets that adopted SMS.
Related projects I have personally been in a situation where an emergency was taking place an me calling the police could have further endangered me and or my family. Because of that situation I started to think what if there was something that I could have done to be able to call for assistance while the crime was taking place. When I thought about it I realized that there is no system in place. I feel if me and my group can successfully develop a system where you are able to text in to emergency assistance that would help society in a great way.
Three Possible Solutions Not being able to contact Emergency assistance. Calling E-mail texting
Solution 1 Calling and stating the problem verbally.
Solution 2 Being able to directly e-mail an emergency dispatcher. Either through the internet provider on you cell phone or on household computer.
Solution 3 Our SMS alert which is simply creating a network that allows a distress victim to directly contact emergency services through text messaging eliminating the need for verbal communication which could cause harm to the victim in certain situations.
Planning and scheduling Think of ways to enhance any existing methods. Find contacts such as phone companies. Present ideas and research. Create prototypes.
Expertise & Consulting Interviews Who have you spoken to? No one yet. Who will you speak to? The U of M because the have done research on this project and phone companies that would be interested in the idea.
Questions for Consultants What kinds of questions will ask the consultant? A. Why do you believe this is a problem worth solving. How would you go about handle this problem. How will you show you have gathered background knowledge? A. Show what we have researched. Tell why we decided to look into this problem. How will you use their time wisely and get them interested in the project? Showing are dedication
Design Process How will you know if this is a problem worth solving? A. Through personal experience. What are the next steps A. Seeing if anyone else has thought of this problem. What steps they have taking to solve this problem. What progress have they made in solving Brainstorm ideas on how to solve it together.
Competitive Analysis Competitors A. Our competitors are the U of M and a police academy in Ireland. What other products are similar A.GPS navigation systems that are built into the phone. Describe the product and how it has evolved over time A. It started as a way to communicate with each other, and with other research they sought a way that people could benefit from and that was with the direct connection to a emergency service. Existing strengths of current design it is proven and tested but has not been extended to the U.S. Potential contacts and mentors locally Who does this now?
Technology New technology being used A. GPS picture voice note and text messaging. Standards being adopted Benefits A. quicker method of communication Standards specifically being ignored It’s a complicated system that not everyone can have it only to the impaired DYA: define your acronyms!
Proposed Team Resources People-T-mobile any wireless company Equipment- cell phones Locations-Everywhere Support & outside services-The U of M Manufacturing-All cell phone manufacturers Sales-Built in the phone charged extra
Procedures Highlight any procedural differences from usual projects of this type none Discuss requirements, benefits, and issues of using new procedures benefits are fast reliable communication. -for more info… List location or contact for procedures document (or other related documents)
Schedule Review high-level Contact emergency services Civil engineering institutes -for more info… List location or contact for detailed schedule (or other related documents)
