This study examined the relationship between alcohol use, intimate partner violence, and relationship adjustment in lesbian relationships. The researchers surveyed 819 lesbian women online about their own and their partner's alcohol use, relationship adjustment, and physical or psychological aggression. They found that higher alcohol consumption by either or both partners was associated with lower relationship adjustment. Frequent but not heavy drinking was linked to better adjustment. Psychological abuse correlated more strongly than physical abuse with poor adjustment. The study was limited by its online recruitment method and age range of participants. Improving inclusion of lower-income and older/closeted women could provide different insights.
