Volcanoes are mountains that sometimes erupt, shooting gas, ash, and burning rock. Inside volcanoes is a deep hole containing hot magma that can push to the surface, forming a crater and flowing as lava. Different types of volcanoes include active volcanoes that can still erupt, dormant volcanoes that are currently sleeping, and extinct volcanoes that cannot erupt again. Some examples of active volcanoes are Kilauea in Hawaii and Arenal in Costa Rica, while Mount Fuji is currently dormant. The eruption of Vesuvius in Italy buried the city of Pompeii under ash.

2. What is a volcano
● A volcano is a mountain. Most of the time, it looks
like any other mountain, but sometimes it shoots gas,
ash and burning rock.
● This is called an eruption.
● The word volcano comes from the name Vulcan.
Vulcan was the Roman god of fire.

3. INSIDE A VOLCANO
● Inside every volcano there is a deep hole. It goes deep
down inside the Earth. It is so hot there that some of
the rocks melts.
● This hot, runny rock is called magma. Sometimes it
comes up the hole in the volcano, pushes out the top
and makes a big hole called a crater. The hot rock
that comes out is called lava.
● The lava runs downhill, cools and becomes hard.
Every time the volcano erupts, a new layer of lava
comes out. The layers make a cone.

Hawaii is growing bigger and bigger because of the
eruptions.
● Arenal is an active volcano in Costa Rica. Turists go
to see the vocano at night.
