CASE STUDY 3: Students with
Disabilities and the Next Generation
Science Standards
Angelica Maries Maderazo Royana Joy Fuentes
PRESENTED BY:
1. How do you describe the prevalence of
learners with special needs in the school
cited in the study?
There are five 6th grade classes at Maple
Grove the only middle school in a small rural school
district. Approximately 10% of the K-12 school
population is receiving special education services.
The school has about 480 students in grades 6-8. The district population
consists of 1,320 students:
92.3%
White
0.5%
2% 0.3%
3.6%
Native American
Asian
Hispanic
Black
34% come from a low socioeconomic status.
1
We describe the prevalence of learners with special
needs in Maple Grove middle school as students with
disabilities, along with their regular education peers, receive
science instruction from the science teacher five days a week
for 50 minutes each day. Most of the identified students
receive instruction in reading/language arts and mathematics
in a co-teaching model. Some students receive additional
pullout services in those content areas or in social skills.
2. How will you describe the special
education programs and services offered in
the school cited in the study?
2
The special education programs and services
offered in the school cited is highly supported by the state.
School districts are held accountable for the performance of
students with disabilities on state assessments. We can also
see it how they required school districts to develop
Individualized Education Plans (IEP), these carefully crafted
plans provide accommodation and modification to the
students with special needs. Although there’s a plan crafted
by the school district, the school in the study added
strategies for students with disabilities. These strategies
effectively enable students to perform better.
3. What are the best practices that you
think may be useful in the public and
private school setting in the Philippines?
One of the main practices that may be useful in
the public and private school setting in the Philippines is
the huge support given by the state through educational
policies. Although there are existing policies for special
children, we can see that there is lacking in the
implementation of these policies. Next, the Individualized
Education Plan (IEP), is a basic requirement for those who
cater to children with special needs. Philippines should put
this matter legally for everyone to craft an IEP. Lastly,
effective strategies such as interactive graphic
presentations, modified assignments, and strategic
groupings. If these practices can be performed in the
Philippines setting, there will be more chances for
exceptional children’s academic success.
