                         Activity:
Date/Time: I met with Jessica today to tell her about my intentions for my
senior project. We did arts and crafts and used this time to get to
08/20/11 know each other.
10:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
(4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
Until today, I did not fully understand the limits to Jessica’s
mobility. Following her hip surgery earlier this summer, moving
from place to place has been a struggle. She has now progressed
from a full body cast, to a wheelchair, and now finally a walker.
This experience enabled me to understand the challenges of
limited mobility. A simple request to see my room upstairs was
                         an ordeal.

09/22/11 Activity:
3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Today I participated in the inaugural Light the Night North
(7 hours) Metro Walk at the Cumming Fairground.

                         Commentary:
We arrived at Jessica’s house mid-afternoon Saturday and
surprised her when a limo came to pick her up for the event.
Jessica was one of the honored heroes on this night. She was
treated like royalty there and it was such an awesome experience
to see Jessica, for one night, not have a care in the world. I was
with her when she got to make her grand entrance and witnessed
her beaming expressions as she greeted people truly inspired by
her strength. She managed to complete the walk, too, through the
help of a golf cart. While there, I also helped my senior project
facilitator with whatever needed to be done to make the event
run a little more smoothly as she was in charge of it and spoke
with her about my upcoming plans for my project.
10/6/11 Activity:
Today, I met with Mrs. Westmoreland, so we could have some
3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. one-on-one time planning my project.
(1 hour)
                         Commentary:
After talking to her I think that it is a good idea to learn about all
aspects of leukemia, not simply from a patient’s standpoint but
from other parties involved including the physicians, the
fundraising organizations, and the hospital. This will enable me
to understand the full process of treatment and also see which
faction of this I might enjoy best as a career in the future.

                         Activity:
10/10/11 Torri Westmoreland and I emailed back and forth.
                          Commentary:
5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. We decided that the best culmination of my project will be to
(1 hour) create a children’s book. I will use photos of Jessica throughout
the treatment process to explain to children what the disease is
and how it is cured. This literature can then be used to teach
children not to fear it, making the experience of the children who
face this disease a bit easier as their peers can understand.

11/26/11 Activity:
Jessica came over to my house today, and she told me more
                         about her treatment process.
11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Commentary:
(4 hours) Today she told me about her latest surgery where she had metal
plates put into her hips. I took notes on her description of this. I
plan to include this in my book as this a possibility some young
patients will face as the chemotherapy treatments wreak havoc
                         on their bodies.

12/17/11 Activity:
Today I went over to Jessica’s house.
8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Commentary:
(2 hours 30 minutes) Two representatives from LLS, a non-profit organization which
strives to make life a little easier for cancer patients, and I drove
to Jessica’s house today. Every year LLS delivers Christmas
presents to a recovering cancer patient. This year Jessica and her
family won the generous gifts. So, this morning I met two ladies
from LLS and helped them bring in all of the gifts and put them
under the Christmas tree. While we were there, Jessica brought
out all of keepsakes from CHOA including her Beads of
Courage and a bongo a generous Child Life Specialist gave her.
Also Monica Morse agreed to meet with me later in the week at
her Atlanta office to tell me a little more about what she does
with LLS, teach me more about the leukemia treatment process,
and show me around her office.

12/23/12 Activity:
                         Met with Monica Morse
7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Commentary:
(5 hours) Today I went down to Atlanta to meet with Monica Morse who
*includes travel time works for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There she
showed me around her office building and explained what she
does on a daily basis. One project she is in charge of is the
monetary funding for Pennies for Patients, a program which
raises money to help pay for patient treatments. She also showed
me the presentation on leukemia she gives when she travels to
elementary schools. It gave me a good idea of the level of
language in which I should write my book. She also sent my
home with brochures on cancer and the treatment process, telling
me to call or email if I have any questions. This enabled me to
see the programs Jessica’s family were offered during treatment,
including financial aid programs, counseling, and fun activities
                         to brighten Jessica’s day.

12/26/12 Activity:
7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Met with Donna Webb, a cancer researcher at Egleston.
(7 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
*includes travel time I called around and finally found someone that was willing to
meet with me and show me around the hospital. I got to see
firsthand the blood cancer floor. I saw the portioned areas where
they give chemotherapy to the young patients, the conference
quarters, and the surgery rooms. Going the day after Christmas
was the perfect time as Mrs. Webb’s case load was very small
and the vacant campus enabled me the chance to see the inner
workings of the hospital without contaminating any children.
While there, she also explained to me a typical day for a
physician as she used to be one and for a researcher as she is
now. This gave me the insight to consider these jobs as possible
careers. Also I saw Jessica’s journey through the eyes of a
                        physician.

12/ 28/12 Activity:
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Today, I met with Mrs. Westmoreland.
                        Commentary:
I told her everything I had learned in the past week. We
discussed ideas to help include this information in my book. She
was excited that I got exposure to this area as it gives me a
chance to see the possible career opportunities open to me. We
also talked about how these could prove good contacts in the
future as the medical field is one that I would like to pursue.

1/14/12 Activity:
12:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Spoke with Mrs. Westmoreland.
(2 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
She helped me compose the questions that I would ask Mr.
Wilde in my interview. Afterwards I composed a list of
questions that includes how CHOA receives funding, upcoming
plans for the building, and his daily work schedule.
Jessica came over. We planned what I would discuss in the book
                        I was making.

2/24/12 Activity:
6:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Met with Mr. Wilde
(4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
*includes travel time I drove down to Atlanta and met Mr. Wilde. The interview was
eye-opening. I could not believe the spectrum of his
responsibility. One day he can lead meetings for 9 hours a day
and the next, he can be working with an individual child’s
payment plan and overseeing his surgery. I am so grateful for the
opportunity to meet with Mr. Wilde. I learned about the
executive world and made a great contact for the future.
2/25/12 Activity:
4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. I went over to Jessica’s house to get a cd of all of the pictures of
(1 hour 30 minutes) her treatment process from her mother.
                        Commentary:
Her mother sat down with me and explained every picture,
clearing up the whole process for me. This helped because
originally I had thought Jessica was placed in an “Espica cast”
from talking to her, however, her mother clarified that this was
                        called a “Spica cast.”

2/26/12 Activity:
10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Today I uploaded all of the pictures to my computer.
(4 hours) Commentary:
Since she has a Mac and I have a PC, I had to screenshot all the
pictures that I thought I might need for the book because my
computer would not let me save them to my hard-drive. This
long, tedious procedure has made me scared for the rest of the
technological process that lay ahead for me.

                        Activity:
3/1/10 Today I cropped and edited all of the pictures.
5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Commentary:
(1 hour 30 minutes) As these pictures were originally screenshots, I needed to get rid
of the computer background in the corners. I did this and then
resaved these pictures to my computer.

3/9/12 Activity:
3:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. I met with Mrs. Westmoreland.
(2 hours 15 minutes) Commentary:
I told her about my meeting with Mr. Wilde. We also talked
about the book I will soon create.

3/10/12 Activity:
10:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Today, I had to reconvert all of my picture files.
(7 hours) Commentary:
I discovered that I had saved all the pictures under the wrong file
format. I found an online picture file converter which I had to
individually upload each picture and convert the file from the
Microsoft paint PNG file to JPEG file. I hate technology.
3/11/12 Activity:
3:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. I planned out my children’s book with Mrs. Westmoreland.
(4 hours) Commentary:
I told her about my horror story the night before. Together we
then made a rough copy of my children’s book, printing out each
picture and organizing my story board.

3/14/12 Activity:
5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. I worked on my book again today.
(3 hours) Commentary:
I finalized my story and wrote down on each page of my rough
draft exactly what will appear in my completed product.

3/15/12 Activity:
4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. I researched different companies with which I could create my
(1 hour) children’s book.
                        Commentary:
In the end, I chose Walgreens. I spent the day uploading all of
the pictures, typing up story into their online site, and choosing
                        backgrounds for each page.

3/17/12 Activity:
2:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Today, Mrs. Westmoreland and I finalized my book.
(4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
We uploaded all of the pictures and the story content.
                        Afterwards, we placed the order.

4/1/12 Activity:
9:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. I decided to check the Walgreen’s website and see why my book
(1 hour 30 minutes) has not yet arrived.
                        Commentary:
After spending over an hour on the phone with a helpful
customer service representative, I discovered that in my
excitement following the completion of my book I had forgotten
to click a submit button. The lady I spoke to was so inspired by
Jessica’s story when she opened my project on the website, she
gave me next day delivery free of charge.

4/3/12 Activity:
4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Today I received my children’s book in the mail.
(2 hours 30 minutes) Commentary:
I was so excited that I got in my car and brought it to Jessica
right away. She loved it and was so excited for others to learn
                       about her story.

Product Work Log

  • 1. Product Work Log Name: Savannah Brooks Date: 04/19/12 Product: Children’s Book Activity: Date/Time: I met with Jessica today to tell her about my intentions for my senior project. We did arts and crafts and used this time to get to 08/20/11 know each other. 10:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. (4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: Until today, I did not fully understand the limits to Jessica’s mobility. Following her hip surgery earlier this summer, moving from place to place has been a struggle. She has now progressed from a full body cast, to a wheelchair, and now finally a walker. This experience enabled me to understand the challenges of limited mobility. A simple request to see my room upstairs was an ordeal. 09/22/11 Activity: 3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Today I participated in the inaugural Light the Night North (7 hours) Metro Walk at the Cumming Fairground. Commentary: We arrived at Jessica’s house mid-afternoon Saturday and surprised her when a limo came to pick her up for the event. Jessica was one of the honored heroes on this night. She was treated like royalty there and it was such an awesome experience to see Jessica, for one night, not have a care in the world. I was with her when she got to make her grand entrance and witnessed her beaming expressions as she greeted people truly inspired by her strength. She managed to complete the walk, too, through the help of a golf cart. While there, I also helped my senior project facilitator with whatever needed to be done to make the event run a little more smoothly as she was in charge of it and spoke with her about my upcoming plans for my project.
  • 2. 10/6/11 Activity: Today, I met with Mrs. Westmoreland, so we could have some 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. one-on-one time planning my project. (1 hour) Commentary: After talking to her I think that it is a good idea to learn about all aspects of leukemia, not simply from a patient’s standpoint but from other parties involved including the physicians, the fundraising organizations, and the hospital. This will enable me to understand the full process of treatment and also see which faction of this I might enjoy best as a career in the future. Activity: 10/10/11 Torri Westmoreland and I emailed back and forth. Commentary: 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. We decided that the best culmination of my project will be to (1 hour) create a children’s book. I will use photos of Jessica throughout the treatment process to explain to children what the disease is and how it is cured. This literature can then be used to teach children not to fear it, making the experience of the children who face this disease a bit easier as their peers can understand. 11/26/11 Activity: Jessica came over to my house today, and she told me more about her treatment process. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Commentary: (4 hours) Today she told me about her latest surgery where she had metal plates put into her hips. I took notes on her description of this. I plan to include this in my book as this a possibility some young patients will face as the chemotherapy treatments wreak havoc on their bodies. 12/17/11 Activity: Today I went over to Jessica’s house. 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Commentary: (2 hours 30 minutes) Two representatives from LLS, a non-profit organization which strives to make life a little easier for cancer patients, and I drove to Jessica’s house today. Every year LLS delivers Christmas presents to a recovering cancer patient. This year Jessica and her
  • 3. family won the generous gifts. So, this morning I met two ladies from LLS and helped them bring in all of the gifts and put them under the Christmas tree. While we were there, Jessica brought out all of keepsakes from CHOA including her Beads of Courage and a bongo a generous Child Life Specialist gave her. Also Monica Morse agreed to meet with me later in the week at her Atlanta office to tell me a little more about what she does with LLS, teach me more about the leukemia treatment process, and show me around her office. 12/23/12 Activity: Met with Monica Morse 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Commentary: (5 hours) Today I went down to Atlanta to meet with Monica Morse who *includes travel time works for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There she showed me around her office building and explained what she does on a daily basis. One project she is in charge of is the monetary funding for Pennies for Patients, a program which raises money to help pay for patient treatments. She also showed me the presentation on leukemia she gives when she travels to elementary schools. It gave me a good idea of the level of language in which I should write my book. She also sent my home with brochures on cancer and the treatment process, telling me to call or email if I have any questions. This enabled me to see the programs Jessica’s family were offered during treatment, including financial aid programs, counseling, and fun activities to brighten Jessica’s day. 12/26/12 Activity: 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Met with Donna Webb, a cancer researcher at Egleston. (7 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: *includes travel time I called around and finally found someone that was willing to meet with me and show me around the hospital. I got to see firsthand the blood cancer floor. I saw the portioned areas where they give chemotherapy to the young patients, the conference quarters, and the surgery rooms. Going the day after Christmas was the perfect time as Mrs. Webb’s case load was very small and the vacant campus enabled me the chance to see the inner
  • 4. workings of the hospital without contaminating any children. While there, she also explained to me a typical day for a physician as she used to be one and for a researcher as she is now. This gave me the insight to consider these jobs as possible careers. Also I saw Jessica’s journey through the eyes of a physician. 12/ 28/12 Activity: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Today, I met with Mrs. Westmoreland. Commentary: I told her everything I had learned in the past week. We discussed ideas to help include this information in my book. She was excited that I got exposure to this area as it gives me a chance to see the possible career opportunities open to me. We also talked about how these could prove good contacts in the future as the medical field is one that I would like to pursue. 1/14/12 Activity: 12:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Spoke with Mrs. Westmoreland. (2 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: She helped me compose the questions that I would ask Mr. Wilde in my interview. Afterwards I composed a list of questions that includes how CHOA receives funding, upcoming plans for the building, and his daily work schedule. Jessica came over. We planned what I would discuss in the book I was making. 2/24/12 Activity: 6:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Met with Mr. Wilde (4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: *includes travel time I drove down to Atlanta and met Mr. Wilde. The interview was eye-opening. I could not believe the spectrum of his responsibility. One day he can lead meetings for 9 hours a day and the next, he can be working with an individual child’s payment plan and overseeing his surgery. I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet with Mr. Wilde. I learned about the executive world and made a great contact for the future.
  • 5. 2/25/12 Activity: 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. I went over to Jessica’s house to get a cd of all of the pictures of (1 hour 30 minutes) her treatment process from her mother. Commentary: Her mother sat down with me and explained every picture, clearing up the whole process for me. This helped because originally I had thought Jessica was placed in an “Espica cast” from talking to her, however, her mother clarified that this was called a “Spica cast.” 2/26/12 Activity: 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Today I uploaded all of the pictures to my computer. (4 hours) Commentary: Since she has a Mac and I have a PC, I had to screenshot all the pictures that I thought I might need for the book because my computer would not let me save them to my hard-drive. This long, tedious procedure has made me scared for the rest of the technological process that lay ahead for me. Activity: 3/1/10 Today I cropped and edited all of the pictures. 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Commentary: (1 hour 30 minutes) As these pictures were originally screenshots, I needed to get rid of the computer background in the corners. I did this and then resaved these pictures to my computer. 3/9/12 Activity: 3:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. I met with Mrs. Westmoreland. (2 hours 15 minutes) Commentary: I told her about my meeting with Mr. Wilde. We also talked about the book I will soon create. 3/10/12 Activity: 10:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Today, I had to reconvert all of my picture files. (7 hours) Commentary: I discovered that I had saved all the pictures under the wrong file format. I found an online picture file converter which I had to individually upload each picture and convert the file from the Microsoft paint PNG file to JPEG file. I hate technology.
  • 6. 3/11/12 Activity: 3:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. I planned out my children’s book with Mrs. Westmoreland. (4 hours) Commentary: I told her about my horror story the night before. Together we then made a rough copy of my children’s book, printing out each picture and organizing my story board. 3/14/12 Activity: 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. I worked on my book again today. (3 hours) Commentary: I finalized my story and wrote down on each page of my rough draft exactly what will appear in my completed product. 3/15/12 Activity: 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. I researched different companies with which I could create my (1 hour) children’s book. Commentary: In the end, I chose Walgreens. I spent the day uploading all of the pictures, typing up story into their online site, and choosing backgrounds for each page. 3/17/12 Activity: 2:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Today, Mrs. Westmoreland and I finalized my book. (4 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: We uploaded all of the pictures and the story content. Afterwards, we placed the order. 4/1/12 Activity: 9:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. I decided to check the Walgreen’s website and see why my book (1 hour 30 minutes) has not yet arrived. Commentary: After spending over an hour on the phone with a helpful customer service representative, I discovered that in my excitement following the completion of my book I had forgotten to click a submit button. The lady I spoke to was so inspired by Jessica’s story when she opened my project on the website, she gave me next day delivery free of charge. 4/3/12 Activity: 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Today I received my children’s book in the mail.
  • 7. (2 hours 30 minutes) Commentary: I was so excited that I got in my car and brought it to Jessica right away. She loved it and was so excited for others to learn about her story.
