1. WHEN POSTING A POSITION
1) Employers should require applicants to complete an application to obtain information
about license, education previous employment and references.
2) Include a statement outlining the consequences of falsifying an application
BEFORE HIRING
1) Verify previous employment and investigate qualification and trustworthiness of
potential employee
2) Check references
3) Conduct a criminal background check after receiving written consent to proceed
4) Create a written record of information verified
WHEN A DECISION IS MADE TO HIRE
Have employee attend a mandatory orientation to include the following:
1) Conduct a drug test stating the organization has a drug free workplace policy
2) Organizational expectations
3) HIPAA regarding PHI and consequences when breaches occur
4) Written consent to be under video surveillance for their protection
5) Electronic communications policy
6) Computer use policy and how to protect patient data
7) Confidentiality agreement
*Employers should have employees to sign each form indicating they have read and
understand the information
3 MONTH EVALUATION
1) Provide feedback to employee on performance and share areas of concern (if individual
gets a poor review, then end employment relationship)
2) Begin In-Service training and outline requirements for attendance
ANNUAL REVIEW & TRAINING
1) All employees should receive an annual performance review
2) All employees should attend In-Service training as required. Topics should include,
HIPAA, reminders of confidentiality, electronic communications policy and any pertinent
information that will create a processes to maintain confidentiality and patient privacy.
