•   Employers should require applicants to
    complete an application to obtain
    information about license, education
    previous employment and references.

•   Include a statement outlining the
    consequences of falsifying an application
1) Verify previous employment and investigate
   qualifications and trustworthiness of potential
   employees

2) Check references

3) Conduct a criminal background check and pre-
   employment drug test after making conditional offer of
   employment; obtain necessary consent

4) Create a written record of information verified
Have employee attend a mandatory orientation to
include the following:

1) A review of the policies and procedures of the
   organization

2) A review of organizational
   expectations

3) A review of HIPAA regulations regarding PHI and
   the consequences of a breach
4) Written consent to be under video
   surveillance for their protection

5) Emphasize and stress the:
     electronic communications policy
     computer use policy
   For proper use and protection of patient data

6) Confidentiality agreement

NOTE: Employers should have employees to sign each
form indicating they have read and understand the
information
1) Provide feedback to employee on performance
   and share areas of concern (if individual gets a
   poor review, then end employment
   relationship)

2) Provide more in-depth, In-Service training

3) Reinforce attendance expectations
1) All employees should receive an annual
   performance review

2) All employees should attend In-Service
   training as required. Topics should include,
   HIPAA, reminders of confidentiality,
   electronic communications policy and any
   pertinent information that will reinforce the
   expectations of maintaining confidentiality and
   patient privacy.
