The History of Guyana

Pre-independence Guyana Independence Era Guyana
• In the colonial era, Guyana's government was
defined by the successive policies of Spanish,
French, Dutch, and British settlers.
• Guyana's economy was focused on plantation
agriculture, which initially depended on slave
labor. Guyana saw major slave rebellions in
1763 and again in 1823. Great Britain passed
the Slavery Abolition Act in British Parliament
that abolished slavery in most British colonies,
freeing more than 800,000 enslaved Africans
among all British Territories.
• The immediate post-war period saw the
founding of Guyana's major political parties. The
People's Progressive Party (PPP) was founded
on January 1, 1950. Internal conflicts developed
in the PPP, and in 1957 the People's National
Congress (PNC) was created as a split-off.
• Guyana was formerly called British Guiana and
achieved independence from the UK in 1966 and
became a republic in 1970.

• Guyana is a country found in the north-
eastern corner of South America.
• It is plentiful in resources such as gold,
bauxite, diamonds and its precious stones,
kaolin, silica sand, soapstone, kyanite,
feldspar, mica, ilmenite, laterite, manganese
radioactive minerals, copper, molybdenum,
tungsten, iron, and nickel.
• The Guyanese economy is heavily
dependent on natural resources because
it is this number one growth for economic
structure.
• Guyana is the only English-speaking
country of South America. Guyana gained
its independence in 1966 so the country's
chief economic assets have been its
natural resources.

#1 Mining And Minerals
Guyana is also known for its abundance
of diamonds and gold. Diamonds are
found in the mountains but gold is found
in both alluvial and subsurface deposits
and is mined by independent prospectors
and in medium- and small-scale mines.
Guyana's most important mineral
resources are the extensive bauxite
deposits. Guyana’s mines yield a high-
quality bauxite, with uses in the refractory,
abrasive and chemical markets for high
temperature applications.
Kaolin, also called China clay, is a soft
white clay that is an essential ingredient
in the manufacture of China and porcelain
and is widely used in the making of paper,
rubber, paint, and many other products.

#2 Forrest
The Guyanese government invested huge sums of money for the improvement of the
accessibility of forests for commercial exploitation. Several foreign nations such as Malaysia and
South Korea have invested in the Guyanese timber industry. Sadly since 2004, Guyana’s forest
cover has declined significantly due to the exploitation of the country’s timber.
8
During the 20th century, Guyana’s timber resources
were greatly underutilized due to several challenges
with the main one being the poorly developed transport
infrastructure that limited access to the forests.

Land and Agriculture
In 2014, approximately 2.13% of Guyana’s total land area was classified as arable. Since
2004, the amount of arable land in Guyana has been declining at a rapid rate. Despite the
decline in the size of arable land in Guyana, the agricultural sector is one of Guyana’s most
vital sectors The Guyanese government estimated that in 2012 the agricultural sector
contributed roughly 20.3% of the Guyanese gross domestic product. A large section of the
Guyanese labor force was employed in agriculture. Guyana’s most important crops include
sugarcane, rice, wheat, and cocoa.

Guyana is known as “El
Dorado” for its gold,
Guyana also exports other
rocks such as diamonds
and bauxite. This allows
access to markets across
the world for rare and
precious stones. Guyana
produces many different
minerals and precisions
stones which are kaolin,
silica, sand, soapstone,
kyanite, feldspar, copper
iron nickel, laterite, mica
and many more. These
play a major part in
manufacturing of goods on
a broad spectrum but in
most cases, construction
and creation of goods.
Mining and Agriculture are
Guyana’s most important
economic industries. Rice,
gold, sugar and bauxite
collectively make 70-75
percent of their export
earnings. Guyana, over the
years has also had its
hand in lumber exports.
Also, due to Guyana’s
proximity to the Atlantic
Ocean, the country also
has vast quantities of fish
as resource opportunities.
The Guyanese
government invested in the
fishing industry after
realizing the benefit it
could bring to the country’s
economy as an industry for
fishing allows persons to
get employment and thus
increase the standard of
living.
