Editor's Notes
- This presentation is recommended for use with primary school students from 3rd class up. The objective of the presentation is to bring an appreciation and understanding of engineering to primary students. The presentation should bring an awareness of where engineering is in the students live. The presentation should inspire students to become engineers and get students excited about engineering. Generally the presentation should take 30-35 minutes. You should allow five minutes at the end for questions. The presentation is customisable and depending on the length of the class, there may be scope for you to complete an activity with the class.

- This slide should be edited to contain your personal details. Speak a little about yourself and include a fun social outlet besides work or college so that students will relate more to you rather than view you as an authoritative figure.

- It’s important to use triggers questions with primary school students to make important connections between what you are discussing and what they have learned before. 5. Ask the class what they think engineers do and record the information on the whiteboard. The “a day in your life” icebreaker activity is good activity to do here to interact with the students. It is available through the volunteer login page on www.steps.ie along with a selection of activities. It’s a good idea to do an icebreaker activity with the students to create a connected and comfortable learning environment for the students.
- Use this slide to highlight the skills that an engineer needs in their job. This includes but is not restricted to: solving problems; creativity drawing and measuring; team work; and, maths As you click on each image explain why these are important to an engineer. Use prompts to show the students that they use the same skills as an engineer in their everyday lives. e.g. Solving problems- tying shoe laces Drawing- who likes drawing? Team work- Tell me when you have worked together in teams and how did it go? Maths 3D Shapes and patterns Cooking in a kitchen Finding house numbers Budgeting Cars speed Time Get the students talking and participating. Feel free to add other attributes or skills.
- Insert your own photos here of you or your colleagues at work. Go through the photos to show how you use the same skills as previously mentioned in your everyday work. Reinforce the message that students use the same skills as an engineer in their everyday lives. If you are including an image of an engineering company in the students locality, it is a good idea to ask the students to they know what the company does.
- Ask the class what they think the different types of engineers are; write their answers on the board, giving hints at different industries and examples of who is involved in those areas (who was ever on a plane)? Biomedical (Artificial Limb) Biomedical engineers use their training to design systems to help prevent, diagnose and treat all types of diseases, injuries and disabilities. They design artificial pace makers, hips , limbs and improve medical equipment. Industrial and manufacturing (Industrial plant) Industrial & Manufacturing Engineer find better ways to make the products that you and I use every day. Everything you can think of needs to be manufactured in some way! Energy and Environmental (Wind Turbines) Engineers who work on renewable energy production create a better world for us by thinking of new ways of creating energy. Electronic (Electronic Circuit) An electronic engineer is the person that designs and creates all mobile phones, ipads,. robots, cameras and lots, lots more. They often work with tiny electronic circuits like this one. Chemical engineers (Chemical Molecule) Produce chemicals we use in our everyday lives including for clean water, making petrol and our food and medicines. Aeronautical (Jet Engine) Aeronautical engineers design and develop machines that can fly including airplanes, helicopters, missiles, satellites and spacecraft. Civil (Skyscraper) Civil engineering is all about improving and protecting the world around us. They develop and construct airports, bridges, roads, railways, tunnels and more Computer and software (CD Disk) Computer & Software engineers work on hardware designing new computer chips, processors or consoles like XBOX 360’s or the Nintendo DS. They also design all the computer application software which tells the computer what to do! Mechanical (Rollercoaster) Mechanical engineers work to improve all modes of transport such as airplanes, boats, and even submarines as well as anything else with moving parts like this rollercoaster. Electrical (Pylons) Electrical engineers bring electricity into our homes and schools. We use electricity for light, heat and entertainment. Choose two of the five engineering examples between slides 7 and 14 and play a game with the class. Ask the class where they think engineering comes into play at home, on the move, on holiday, free time or in the community showing them how engineering is all around them and show them that they can be part of engineering. Optional- Set a timer for the children to think up as many instances of engineering they can see in this picture.
- Bedroom – Light – electrical engineers make the light work by suppling us with electricity. Bathroom – shower – clean water in your bathroom is kept clean by chemical engineers. Garden – a mower – a mechanical engineer designed the working parts of this mower. They are always working on ways of making them better. Computer – the software you use on your computer was designed by computer and software engineers. Living room – heating – the heating system in your home was designed by building systems engineers. Kitchen – a kettle or other machines in your kitchen were developed by electronic engineers.

Roller skates – industrial engineers design the factories where roller blades and roller skates are made Skateboard - aeronautical engineers design aeroplanes that move fast using the same knowledge that makes skateboards move fast -aerodynamics Classroom - look at the technology in the classroom – did engineers work on this? Bikes - mechanical engineers make bikes faster and able to do better stunts Cars - cars are safer now thanks to the constant work of engineers School bus - did you come to school on a bus? Some buses now use special clean fuels that don’t pollute engineers design new engines for this fuel.

- Speedboat - mechanical engineers design fast speedboat engines. Lighthouse - the light in a lighthouse has to shine very far out, electronic engineers work on light fittings that do this. Wind Turbines - you often see these by the sea. Electrical engineers are always thinking of the best ways to generate electricity such as by wind. Sun cream - chemical engineers help to design safe sun creams that block the harmful rays of the sun Icebox - an icebox keeps food cold. Insulation is the science behind this which engineers use to design something to keep your ice creams cold at the beach.
- Music - electronic engineers developed the electric guitar which makes much more noise than a non-electric one Football - Engineers build and design football stadiums, design better shoes and footballs for players to run faster and score more goals. Cycling- this looks dangerous! Don’t worry engineers have developed helmets and safety gear to protect you? They use their knowledge of maths, physics and the human body to do this. Technology - what is this girl looking at? a screen - computers and music technology are developed by engineers. They are always creating new designs and faster computers. Cinema - 3D films were developed by engineers. Gaming - computer games are written by computer and software engineers who use maths and computer languages to do this.
- This section looks at what innovative designs engineers may invent in the future. Encourage the class to use their imagination to think like engineers and imagine what engineers will design in the future. You can prompt the students and tell them some of the problems that the engineers of the future will have to solve: Environmental pollution Global warming Healthcare improvements Renewable energy Water treatment Flood prevention Get the students into groups of four for about 5 mins to come up with an invention or an improvement to of a current device and between them tease problems through. Get the children to tell the class what theirs was, where problems were and what type of engineer involved. Write the students ideas on the board. It’s important to remember that every idea is a good idea. Encourage the students positively and praise all their ideas.
