This study examined the relationship between intravenous contrast administration during surgery and the risk of acute kidney injury after major gastrointestinal surgery. The study prospectively followed patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery at multiple medical centers. Intravenous contrast was given during some surgeries and the rates of acute kidney injury after surgery were compared between those who received contrast and those who did not to determine if contrast increased kidney injury risk.
