Grameen Bank is a microfinance organization and community development bank founded in Bangladesh that provides small, collateral-free loans to impoverished individuals. It was started in 1976 by Professor Muhammad Yunus and became an officially chartered bank in 1983. Grameen Bank aims to provide financial services to the rural poor, eliminate money lender exploitation, and create self-employment opportunities through a system the disadvantaged can understand. It offers housing, education, and livelihood loans through a group-lending model that builds social support and accountability among borrowers. Grameen Bank pioneered the concept of microcredit and microfinance for poverty alleviation.
