Just a Quick Quote…… Many literacy educators feel the surge of new technology rumbling under their feet while they try to maintain a firm footing on the solid ground of basic reading, writing, and speaking instruction. The challenge is how to continue teaching traditional literacy skills while simultaneously learning new technologies and instructing their students in those technologies. (Leu 2009)
3. Why Use Media and Video? Technology promises new ways to promote literacy but educator’s reactions to it have been mixed… WHY? Lack of Resources, Lack of Funding, Lack of Time By giving educator’s a new twist on how technology can be used maybe we can convince them.
4. Why is Media Literacy sooooo Important? “Traditionally we have selected teachers who were already literate and could pass their literacy along to our children. Now, however, the very nature of literacy is regularly changing because of new information and communication technologies. Many teachers literate in older technologies quickly become literate as newer technologies of information and communication replace previous technologies…We must begin to develop strategies to help each of us keep up with the continually changing definitions of literacy that will exist in our world.”
5. What is Media Literacy? Media Literacy is : The ability to communicate competently in all media forms- print and electronic- as well as access, understand, analyze and evaluate the images, words, and sounds that comprise contemporary culture.
6. What is Digital Video and Digital Media? Digital Video is a type of video recording system that works by using a digital rather than an analog system. Digital Media is electronic media used to store, transmit, and receive digitized information.
7. What are the Benefits of Media and Video Literacy? Engages students Allows students to become wise media consumers Media Literacy uses the “Inquiry Process” Helps to meet the standards while utilizing higher level skills Allows for the integrating of cross curricular subjects Focuses on skills rather than just content knowledge (framework for the future)

10. To Sum It Up….. We as educators are one step ahead of the game by being aware of how technology can enhance our teaching. It is important to realize that like everything technology also has it flaws. It is up to us to understand these flaws and realize that computers should and will play a major role in the reading classroom but will almost certainly not replace books or teachers (THANK GOODNESS)! However, computers will redefine textbooks and literacy and the roles of teachers.
