Irish Finance for Activists provides progressive and radical responses and strategies for finance in Ireland. It discusses that NAMA acquired approximately 16,000 properties and over €62 billion in debts from the top 190 debtors, who overborrowed in a Ponzi-like scheme that inflated asset values unsustainably. Brendan McDonagh, the CEO of NAMA, noted the disconnect between economic growth rates of 8-9% and bank lending growth of 35-40%, and that overpaying for assets caused the problems.

Presentation of a talk given at University of Luxembourg.
The Cyprus crisis is one of the most complex in the Eurozone, although in absolute terms the problem is insignificant. Inflows of foreign deposits in excess of 700% the island’s GDP allowed a «perfect crisis» to form and contagion from Greece destroyed overnight 23.6% of the GDP. Rescue efforts were (mis)guided by a confluence of European and local politics, conflicting analyses of the problems, and forbearance from the supervisors. Bank depositors were bailed-in, making international headlines. We will argue that the bail-in is a viable solution to banking crises but with potential significant adverse effects.

This is a review talk present at the 3rd Greek Public Policy Forum in Chania, Crete. A brief review of the state of the eurozone crisis countries highlights the problems created by the design of the common currency. Non-standard policies of the ECB are reviewed and their success, or lack thereof, explained. Some flawed decisions in handling the Cyprus crisis are also pointed out and the presentation concludes on how the banking union could overcome some of the current problems.

2017 has been a sensational year for European FinTech.
The £9.1b acquisition of WorldPay, $100m Series F of Funding Circle, record VC investment, record lending volumes, millions of users joining challenger banks — while Europe undergoes a massive regulatory overhaul, make FinTech arguably the most exciting sector in startups and venture capital.
In this 70-slide presentation you will find some info that may surprise you:
The pace of online lending in the UK over the past 2 years has increased 2.5x from £3.1b to £8.3 in 2Q 2017.
On average UK banks have a shockingly low NPS of +2, including the UKs largest bank (by market cap) at -24.
Robo-advisors may find themselves in a tough spot as 4/5 big banks plan on launching a robo-advisor service.
European InsurTech practically didn’t exist 3 years ago, now accounts for roughly 10% of total FinTech funding.
A big thank you to Piotr Pisarz at DN Capital and to Sophie Winwood at Innovate Finance for making this deck happen.

Digital challenger banks have raised more capital than any other FinTech vertical in Europe, totalling nearly $500m since 2015. Mired in controversy, acquisitions, mega-rounds, and mega-write-downs, challengers are now headline news in tech/business press on a weekly basis.
These European phenomena are enabled by new regulations that make it easier than ever to start a bank. Will this emerging breed of challengers displace high street banks? Read on to learn more about:
- NPS of European incumbents and challengers
An overview of online-only, VC-backed, and branched challengers — and who is funding them
- Regional and demographic customer surveys, bank ROE, rates for savers
- The fee structure of 8 challengers and 5 incumbents
Public challengers: Metro Bank, Shawbrook, Aldermore, Virgin Money
- An overview of PSD2, a regulation that enables digital challengers
- How incumbents BBVA and Santander are “fighting back”
- Standouts in UI and App store rankings
- Global mobile banking adoption
- Predictions for 2017

1. Macro environment - Global growth slowing, particularly in Europe. UK growth expected to be 1.2% this year but Brexit risks loom large.
2. Momentum - business investment declining, household spending holding up on strong wage growth.
3. Operating costs – expected to rise due to tight labour market, wage growth close to a 11-year high. Commodity prices up 12.5% ytd.
4. Corporate stance – risk appetite lowest since 2008, focus on cost reduction and increasing cash flow.
5. Balance sheet – cash rich, credit cheap and easily available, pockets of debt risk in ‘cov-lite’ sectors, profits falling.
6. Risks – effects of Brexit and weak domestic demand, rising global geopolitical risk and protectionism also a worry for large UK corporates.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

14. “The problem here is that, when one looks at the top 190 debtors
in the NAMA universe with debts of €62 billion, a relatively small
number of people were chasing the same assets and it was like a
Ponzi scheme. They overborrowed and were overlent to by
banks. There was huge inflation of asset values and this was not
sustainable in the context of the economy. There was a
disconnect between the economy growing at 8% or 9% per
annum and lending by banks growing at 35% or 40% per year.
The problem was caused by overpaying for assets.”
