On September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers took control of four domestic airplanes, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field in Pennsylvania. In response, several investigations and commissions examined intelligence failures leading up to 9/11 and recommended reforms such as establishing a Director of National Intelligence to improve information sharing between agencies.
