concept of development
 Development is both a process and a project
 Economic development refers to the raising of the productive
capacity of a country through the introduction of policies designed
to enhance the productivity of land, labor and capital
 raise standards of living and reduce or alleviate the poverty of the
inhabitants of the country
EMERGING BANGLADESH
 Bangladesh is a developing country
 According to a recent opinion poll, Bangladesh has the second most
pro- capitalist population in the developing world
 Bangladesh ranks fifth in the global production of fish and seafood
ECONOMIC GROWTH
Economic Environment
 The economy continued to face several key challenges
Political uncertainty
Growing infrastructure deficit
De-facto onerous regulatory regime
 Political dynamics seem to be the main uncertainty for Bangladesh's
 Increasing female participation in the labor force and boosting
private investment
 Maximize growth and help realize the country’s goals of becoming a
middle income country

BANGLADESH
 Growth averaged 5.4% per year
 Which has been the highest 5-year average since the country’s
independence
 All-time high GDP of 6.63 percent in 2006
 Record low of 4.08 percent in 1994
 Bangladesh is considered as a developing economy
 GDP growth rates above 5 percent due to development of
microcredit and garment industry
 Three fifths are employed in the agriculture sector

 Three quarters of exports revenues come from producing ready-made
garments

 Export competitiveness
Bangladesh is one of the most closed economies in the
world
Opening up trade has to be one of the pillars of future
growth.
the country should take into account how a reduction in
tariffs will affect revenue considering that tariffs constitute
about 50% of the already weak tax collection effort.

 The financial sector
Financial depth is quite low and the range of financial
services quite rudimentary
Many of the important contractual savings institutions are
absent while capital markets are extremely shallow
The public banking sector remains riddled with non-
performing loans, despite recent improvements

INCREASE GDP GROWTH
 The world bank has painted a brighter picture for Bangladesh's
economy
 For the next two fiscal years, pinning hopes on strong domestic
demand, exports, investment and remittance
 Bangladesh would grow at an average of 6.7 percent a year over
fiscals 2018-2020
 Bangladesh is among the top 17 out of 134 countries
 The government has set a target of 7.4 percent GDP growth for the
current fiscal year
PROBLEMS OF ECONOMY AND CAUSES OF
THESE PROBLEMS
1) Caretaker government NO confidence
 Fixing principles closing and action without plans
 Showing excuse of anticorruption torturing businessmen
 Showing excuse of anticorruption torturing businessmen
2) investment of businessmen and investors:
 Businessmen and investors are not interested to invest in this
country.
 Money earned by corruption is closed now for anticorruption.
 Donor agencies, military government and international they do not
know who is giving the direction of power
PROBLEMS OF ECONOMY AND CAUSES

3) Purchasing power of general people:
 International market exists from previous two or three year's higher
price of products
 Immoral syndicates of the period of union (bnp-jamat) government
destructive activities
 Not as much as our expectation production of rice
CHALLENGES
 Increasing investment by at least 5 percentage points of GDP from
the current 28.7 percent
 Raising the female labor force participation rate by easing labor
market entry barriers for women
 Increasing returns on education by enhancing the quality and
relevance of education
 Increasing outward orientation by deepening and diversifying labor-
intensive exports

INTRODUCTION  Economic development is one dimension of the more inclusive concept of development  Development is both a process and a project  Economic development refers to the raising of the productive capacity of a country through the introduction of policies designed to enhance the productivity of land, labor and capital  raise standards of living and reduce or alleviate the poverty of the inhabitants of the country
  • 5. EMERGING BANGLADESH  Bangladesh is a developing country  According to a recent opinion poll, Bangladesh has the second most pro- capitalist population in the developing world  Bangladesh ranks fifth in the global production of fish and seafood

Economic Environment  The economy continued to face several key challenges Political uncertainty Growing infrastructure deficit De-facto onerous regulatory regime  Political dynamics seem to be the main uncertainty for Bangladesh's  Increasing female participation in the labor force and boosting private investment  Maximize growth and help realize the country’s goals of becoming a middle income country

GROWTH DEVELOPMENT IN BANGLADESH  Growth averaged 5.4% per year  Which has been the highest 5-year average since the country’s independence  All-time high GDP of 6.63 percent in 2006  Record low of 4.08 percent in 1994  Bangladesh is considered as a developing economy  GDP growth rates above 5 percent due to development of microcredit and garment industry  Three fifths are employed in the agriculture sector

THE KEY CONSTRAINTS TO IMPROVED GROWTH PERFORMANCE INCLUDE  Export competitiveness Bangladesh is one of the most closed economies in the world Opening up trade has to be one of the pillars of future growth. the country should take into account how a reduction in tariffs will affect revenue considering that tariffs constitute about 50% of the already weak tax collection effort.

INCREASE GDP GROWTH  The world bank has painted a brighter picture for Bangladesh's economy  For the next two fiscal years, pinning hopes on strong domestic demand, exports, investment and remittance  Bangladesh would grow at an average of 6.7 percent a year over fiscals 2018-2020  Bangladesh is among the top 17 out of 134 countries  The government has set a target of 7.4 percent GDP growth for the current fiscal year

CHALLENGES  Increasing investment by at least 5 percentage points of GDP from the current 28.7 percent  Raising the female labor force participation rate by easing labor market entry barriers for women  Increasing returns on education by enhancing the quality and relevance of education  Increasing outward orientation by deepening and diversifying labor- intensive exports
